SportingNews: Rob Akey on being left out
Awesome interview with Akey on UI getting left behind in the conference shuffle.

To his team regarding being left out:
“Let it piss you off a little bit. Let it put a big ol’ chip on your shoulders. Let’s play so well that we make the world fall in love with the University of Idaho Vandals. We’ve got the opportunity to be the last WAC champions. You look at that gravestone and we have the chance to have our names on there forever.”
Gotta love a coach with that kind of intensity. Also some good quotes from the AD. Thinks there will be a new classification of football.

Spear is holding out hope that the true BCS power conferences—which he counts as four (“Are they squeezing out the ACC and the Big East?”)—will force all other FBS schools to work together on a survival plan, and that Idaho will have a voice in that discussion. Spear envisions a landscape in 2014 in which the BCS conferences have broken off from the rest of college football’s bowls subdivision: “You’ll have the BCS conferences, then the FBS, then the FCS.”
There it is. That's exactly what we see transpiring right now.

Then 1988 will happen all over again.
Re: SportingNews: Rob Akey on being left out
I think Idaho and New Mexico St. will end up in Mountain West. Akey has a great story. He has certainly done a lot with little.

Why do you think this?

Why? I feel for them, but I don't see much they have to offer. My guess is that the belt will expand again.
Re: SportingNews: Rob Akey on being left out
Idaho won't end up anywhere other than FCS again.
Their stadium is a hybrid between a basketball gym and a barn.
I'm sorry, but no legitimate conference is going to come calling.
Re: SportingNews: Rob Akey on being left out
Sounds like he's hoping they'll make a movie someday :D

I don't think people got the fact that even though the Belt did not mention taking them it doesn't mean they won't schedule them. Since they won't be part of a conference then no deadline is necessary. And since they will probably be independents then it will be at least 2 schools that the Belt teams can add to their schedules that are on near equal ground when it comes to scheduling negotiations. I do think that NMSU's proximity gives them a better edge though.

Yeah, they can probably get 6-7 SBC games a year if they want them. Get 2 a year from the MWC, 1 FCS (maybe even 2 on occasion if they get desperate, not like they will be going to a bowl anyway as an indy), 3 $$$ games (Colorado, WSU, and OSU are three that come to mind quickly and might even be semi-winnable), 1 with NMSU, and 5 with the SBC. You could fill a schedule that way. Would not be pretty, but it will keep the FB program around a while longer.

Hopefully we'll never be on the outside looking in again.

Well, I've never seen ANYTHING run off Sunbelt flamers like LA Tech getting invited to CUSA. Poof! Overnight, they were gone in a flash!

Re: SportingNews: Rob Akey on being left out
Speaking of IDAHO, has anyone else seen the Alaskan Airlines plane with the Idaho Vandals logos on it? I didn't have time to take a pic.
If Idaho can have a plane with a wrap, couldn't Tech get Delta, American or American Eagle?

It is nice for a change but I miss the hate from them. When they hate on TECH they are validating our superiority.
