Sitting in the stands after having paid $40, was ticked after the first quarter or so... And then it was just plain comical. What else can you do but laugh when we don't make any adjustments whatsoever? Even the little old ladies were yelling at Holtz.
And I talked to one of the player's fathers tonight in the stands, and even the players don't know what in the hell these coaches are doing. I believe the players have quit on the coaches, because they have no faith in their play calling or coaching. And after having seen the debacle tonight firsthand, I would agree. And ANYONE who argues we have a talent problem and NOT a coaching problem doesn't have a clue about football. We flat got outcoached (yet again) tonight. Rice's coaches were probably laughing their asses off at our simple-minded staff all night. How many series did they use #35 at QB, and how many times did they throw with him in the game? Once. And how many times did we leave at least two players 15-20 yards off the ball? Every down. They were doing nothing but ramming the ball down our throats, and we made zero adjustments to stop it. And offense? I won't even get started there or I'll never quit typing. Our linemen may not be the best, but no line would succeed when the entire stadium knows what play is coming next.
PLayers probably just now catching up to the coaches. The coaches quit on the players a long time ago.
Long story short......$hit happened and it is all over us!!!!
Dixon needs to tell the coaches he's done for the season. DAS (dumb *ss Skip) is going to do permanent damage to Dixon's knees by riding him so hard. (TWSS)
The play-calling, among other things, was really bad. Case in point, after Harris had the long run on our first series, I was thinking "please don't call the EXACT same play," and we called the exact same play. We had some success in the first series by keeping them off-balance and varying our formations. By the end of the game, we were running the same crap over and over with the same formation--MEMO: "OUR OFFENSE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO DO THAT!"
I mention the first couple of series because I think the outcome had as much to do with our INABILITY to sustain drives on offense as it did with their ability to sustain drives against our defense.
I called the Harris fumble! Ah, sorry about that. After the long run to make it first and goal, I said, ooops! needed to score on that play. Now, he'll fumble, as we always do on goal to goal plays. Sure enough.....just like clockwork.
And then, I was shouting to our LB, Cobb? who scooped up their fumble "get down! before you...." ooops again! too late, just like the NC State game, we fumbled it back and they scored a TD. Man! nothing has changed since the NC State game. Mediocre (at best, with a stretch) teams beating the crap outta us.
What really killed us in the first half was not having a right defensive end that could hold the edge. Really it killed us the whole game, and maybe it was because Dora was out. Our adjustments in the second half didn't work that well. Would have been nice to have had Liggins in the secondary for this game, too. OLine and QB play continue to doom us on offense. I thought our wideouts actually played better, both in catching the ball and blocking. This is still very much a problem with our talent level than our coaching, IMO. We have not been recruiting well enough the past several years.
