Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Attention fellow Louisiana folks! Sept 28 - Oct 5 is early voting. Oct 12 is election day. A lot on the ballot, including guvnar!
For my fellow East Natchitoches peeps, I am running for Parish Council District 3. Would appreciate a vote (or two).
Last night the Chamber hosted a candidates' forum, parish president and council seats, and one fellow running for president is a self-proclaimed socialist. Young fellow named Nicholas Wright. His answers to questions were...well, interesting. (I'm being kind). He also wants the name of the city of Natchitoches to be changed to "Nicholas Town." Says it's too confusing for both the city and the parish to be named the same. His platform? Free everything!! :rolleyes4:

I think he is Jewish, by birth, i.e. born to a Jewish family, and up-bringing. But if you live in the Cane River community, the Isle Brevelle, you tend to migrate toward St. Augustine Catholic Church and its influence on the local community.
Some background...
Augustin Metoyer was the first born of 11 children to the union of the slave woman, Marie Therese Coin-coin (pronounced "quan quan"), and the Frenchman Pierre Metoyer. He, like all his siblings, was born into slavery. Eventually he was manumitted, thanks to Pierre Metoyer, and secured a Spanish land grant of 1,000 acres in 1793. As did his younger brother Louis Metoyer, whose holdings is now the famous Melrose Plantation. Augustin grew his holdings, eventually amassing 6,000 acres and holding 197 slaves of his own. By the 1830 census he was the richest man in Louisiana and one of the wealthiest in the nation.
In 1803, after Louisiana became part of the US, Augustin Metoyer donated land and had a church built, Roman Catholic, as thanks to the French, but more so, the Spanish influence, it was the only religion in that region. In 1829 Rome recognized the church as an official parish and a priest was permanently assigned to it. St. Augustine Catholic Church, Melrose, Louisiana is the oldest Catholic Parish in the US "of, by, and for people of color."
Today, it remains the center of the community. Thus! if you live in the Isle Brevelle you cannot help but be a part of St. Augustine Church.

Good luck dawg80! I’d certainly vote for you if I lived in ENP. We’re working on the LA-1226 & 1227 for LADOTD right now and would love to come back and chip seal and fog seal some Parish Roads for you guys.
Hoping you’re successful, and if so, let’s eat some BBQ and I’ll show you some inventive ways (like we do in Texas) to stretch your dollars over many more miles.

Deal!

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Congrats on your win Jim.
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I won with 59% of the vote. My vote total of about 1,700 is more than some of the other districts' combined vote total. Each district has about 8,000 people each (5 districts). So, it was a good result.
I had to battle the local media who got behind my opponent. They offered anything he wanted in terms of free advertising. The online Natchitoches Parish Journal was deleting posts that did not support my opponent, on their blog. My opponent could post articles and comments and the ability to comment on those was disabled. But, fortunately, their efforts backfired. Many people picked up on the one-sided media and rallied around me.
The NPJ did the same thing to John Richmond, candidate for parish president. He garnered the most votes and is in a runoff with the NPJ's selected candidate Lee Waskom. Mr. Richmond is a Tech graduate...civil engineering. I hope he wins the runoff.
Politics is a dirty game. It's also funny how people who wouldn't have given me the time of day a couple of months ago are suddenly seeking me out. I changed my affiliation to "No Party" but now both major parties are actively pursuing me to "join" them. The state organizations have been calling and sending letters.
The Natchitoches Parish government takes in $26 million in annual revenue, from taxes and state "transfers." The percentage that goes to large salaries and "goofy stuff" is amazing. The budget is 45 pages. If I had been elected king, I could increase services, improve the roads, and return about half back to taxpayers. The waste!
And this is very typical of any and every government body...local, state, and federal.

Congratulations on a solid win, and also on whipping the establishment press! Hope you can make a difference.
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I hope you can make a difference too. The political establishment in this country is the biggest threat to our freedom that exists. The NPJ sounds like it's nothing more than a typical propaganda distributor for the establishment.
The People have spoken. Give em hell, Dawg80!
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Thanks all!
And, I hope ALL the Abraham voters join with ALL the Rispone voters and let's get that sorry SOS John Bel out of office! Louisiana is lagging behind the rest of the country, left at the station as the Trump Express Train rolled on.
POS Edwards boasts of "balancing the state budget" but he did that by accepting many $millions of new federal hand-outs. Our economy has tanked under Edwards, which is ridiculous given how well the country is doing.
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
He also boasts about the first teacher pay raise which is total BS. He played a shell game with the money.
I may do what several of my Vitter hating friends did in the last election that put Edwards in in the first place. Rispone is a POS.
That said...
Thanks for being a public servant rather than a politician. I know where your heart is.
