Well, this is kinda weird. Great to have him join us, but why the timing?

Winter Quarter started.

Yeah, I know, but the way it was worded, it sounded like Holtz was expecting him sooner.

Holstein was Gray shirted. He's eligible now.
Guys, on paper at least, Holstein looks like the best skill player LA Tech has signed in a long, long, time. The only skill player as decorated as Holstein that I can think of us signing in the last 20 years is maybe former Bulldog RB Kenneth Dixon. And we all know the great impact Dixon had on this program. That said, I don't really expect to see Holstein on the field until 2021. But it's nice to remind Tech fans of what's ahead.

I watched him play on TV, a couple of games in high school. Remember him being pretty good. This is a good signing.

And didn't we recently lose a young QB to the transfer portal?

Fox was saying on Sportstalk the other day there are something like 380 players in the transfer portal right now. I don't think there's any way in this world they all land somewhere. Maybe not even half. Going to the transfer portal may be like entering the Twilight Zone a lot of these players never return from. So opting out may in fact really be quitting.

Not to mention the eligibility bonus of this year not counting (meaning maybe fewer open scholarships).
Just like the other aspects of recruiting, it'll probably be a trickle down situation. The former 5 stars or guys that have shown something on the field will go to the biggest name programs, further down the food chain you're taking more risk (on both sides) and looking for scheme fit, playing time, potential, etc.
I think this is a good time to have an experienced, well-connected coach. And to be a solid, stable, winning program. I guess we'll see how it all shakes out, but it's going to take a few years in most cases.

I saw Caleb live a handful of times and in several TV games. A couple of times the better defenses he played in 2019 gave him a problem or two.
STM played Holy Cross at Tulane's Yulman Stadium in September, 2019. One of HC's linebackers fooled him in coverage a couple of times, breaking up 2 passes and picking another one off. It was none other than Tyler Grubbs.
But the biggest problem he faced in the recruiting game is the fact he didn't look like a blue chip recruit as a sophomore. Had he had the type of year in 2017 that he did in 2018 he would have been viewed in a different way from a recruiting perspective, in my opinion.
But signing him was a big win for Tech. Smart kid who was once a Harvard commit. Also known for being a film rat.
