Schedule Changes / 2022 / Baylor Series Cancelled / Add Missouri
The Bulldogs were originally slated to open the 2022 season in Waco against Baylor, but will instead open against the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Missouri on Sept. 3.
Quote:
"We want to do everything we can to schedule six home games every year moving forward. Our philosophy will be to schedule one Power Five, two Group of Fives and one FCS each year," said Wood. "We realize that next year we will only have five home games, but we will have six starting in 2023. Our plan is to try to make that the standard every season providing our fans an opportunity to watch the Bulldogs in The Joe."

The entire three-game series with Baylor has been cancelled. The Bulldogs were supposed to open the 2020 season in Waco, but the game was canceled due to Covid19 issues within the Tech program.
The remaining two games on the contract included the 2022 opener and a 2023 home date against the Bears. Tech is looking for a replacement home game for the 2023 home date.

Great to hear they are trying for 6/year and not dipping down to 5.

I hope we try to get a long-term series with USM. Don't thing '23 will work because they already have 2 road games.
in 2023 Memphis should have an opening since UNT will be a conference game.

Honestly -
Mizzou is a much more winnable game vs Baylor and we were getting hosed on the money side of the Baylor series anyway...

I was looking forward to going to Waco. Oh well.
Re: Louisiana Tech Announces Football Schedule Change for 2022 - latechsports.com
I love that we're trying to get some consistency on the scheduling side of things, and not playing Baylor saves me some family drama (my parents went there, are huge fans). But with the first game already gone, wouldn't the rest of the Baylor series have more or less just been a one-for-one?
Couldn't we have treated that like one of our G5 series? The cycle would have been off (for this year) but if we think of @Clemson as the money game, and then consider Baylor and USA as one-for-ones (which they'd more or less be since our first trip to Waco was cancelled), and then we've got the FCS home money game. That's exactly what he's describing (just better - with a P5 team in one of the G5 one-for-one spots).
And then we'd be right where we're wanting to go in 2023 (but again, better). @SMU is your road G5, Baylor at home is your (normally) G5 home (but better!), @Nebraska is your money game, NWST is FCS game. That's literally what we want, right?
Is this just a matter of trading a game @Baylor for a better paying game @Missouri?
I mean, more money is more money but why would we be super worried about this year if we're hoping to go to a one money game a year plan anyway?

Mizzou was scheduled to play at Middle Tennessee that day.

I suppose some of this could be Baylor not wanting to return the 2023 game. Not totally clear (it usually isn't) who is driving this.
Re: Louisiana Tech Announces Football Schedule Change for 2022 - latechsports.com
2024 has two away money games scheduled. And 2029 (how do we have games scheduled for 2029!) has "too many" G5s.
Re: Louisiana Tech Announces Football Schedule Change for 2022 - latechsports.com
This change may not be related, but SEC and BIG 12 OOC schedules for 2023 will blow up, especially the SEC's. It looks like TU and OU will begin play in the SEC in 2023, and the conference will go to a nine-game schedule. Most teams already have four OOC games scheduled. BYU will start in the BIG 12 in 2023, regardless of what TU and OU do. The entry date for UCF, Cincy and Houston is not set. When the swap is complete, the Big 12 may go to an 8-game schedule, but no matter what happens, I suspect the Big 12 teams will look to make change to thier OOC schedules. Of course their will be a trickle-down effect.

Maybe we could get Army to come here in 2023 and return there sometime from 2024-2027. Other teams that appear to have openings in 2023 include Kansas State, UCF, and BYU

It makes sense that this might be a factor, except you'd think it'd work the other way for us here.
If Baylor is going to an 8 game conference schedule in 2023, that gives them an extra OOC game and mitigates the road trip to Ruston for them somewhat. So that'd make it more doable from their end.
Now, they may just want out of that return game either way (or feel like they need out of it since they didn't actually get the 2-for-1) but the realignment changes really should only help us here (unless maybe they were scheduled for the "extra" Big 12 game at home that year - but even then, you'd think they'd just buy another home game).

BYU has to lose some games in 2023 to join Big XII. UCF might still be G5 at that time.
