Sonny Dykes Predicts Split between Power Conferences and G5
In the DMN this morning, Sonny Dykes predicted a future split between the power conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) and the Group of Five (AAC, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt). His quote caught my attention: "There is such a big difference right now between the haves and have nots and I think we'll eventually split into two separate divisions. Alabama and La Tech aren't playing the same sport."
SMU coach Rhett Lashlee stated: "Would you rather get beat 48-7 to Georgia in the first round or play for a championship? Some say that makes it FCS football, but FCS football thrives for what it is. What saves G5 football is competition... I think fans would've loved it if Liberty, SMU, Troy and Boise State were in a four-team playoff last year... Kids will still transfer up or down but at least each school is competing for something."
Lot of truth in what was said.

I see no way around it -
I'll be honest, the only sport I truly follow now is Tech baseball and to some extent dunkin dog basketball -
The state of college football is a huge turnoff for me - it has actually pushed me to become a much larger NFL fan, I could honestly careless about college football these days
I would welcome the split - maybe it would balance the playing field into realistic groups
The entire system is unsustainable

This is where I’m at.
The NFL as bad as it is is still more evenly matched than CFB now. At least their entire system makes sense. CFB is chaos right now headed for insanity.

I'd love to see one of our new admins get out ahead on this thing like the SMU guy did. It's like Judy has them by the short hairs and won't let speak...what can she do? Kick us out of the CUSA that is making us so much money in TV revenue?
Bottom line is that the NCAA has been a problem for many years. That organization needs to be s canned.

Yet, LA Tech has a standing 3 game win streak against Alabama. Sonny Dykes is just thirsty for attention.

True, but it was WAY different in 1998 than today. We had a puncher's chance back then, but not now.

Yep! technically. Bama had to forfeit their 13-0 win over us(1992?), so that makes it three in a row.

Actually, the game Bama had to forfeit was 56-3 in 1993. Their 13-0 win in 1992 was fair and legit!

I prefer to remember it as us roaring back from behind after the fourth quarter ended.

Re: Sonny Dykes Predicts Split between Power Conferences and G5
The split may be inevitable, but I remember when we first went 1-AA. There was a positive vibe about being able to compete for a national title. Then within a couple of years, we realized no one really cared who won the 1-AA title. Americans don't like minor leagues other than in baseball--and even that is struggling more these days. The SEC and B10 are basically destroying college football. I don't hold out much hope.
Re: Sonny Dykes Predicts Split between Power Conferences and G5
TV and the NCAA destroyed football for all the have nots. We might as well try to win amongst the other have nots. It’s our only option. Mid week games are now our worst enemy.
Re: Sonny Dykes Predicts Split between Power Conferences and G5
TV (ESPN) ruined college football by the massive contracts to the big boy conferences. These schools got a huge infusion in money to really take their program to a very commercialized level.
