Took a ride out about 7:30 or 8 and was surprised how everything was shut down and the streets rolled up! It started sprinkling and I headed for home. It is awfully quiet - it'd be nice to have it stay this way!

Keep us informed throughout the day Monday so those of us on I-20 will know what to expect. Same goes for you guys in Laf. and Alex.
Good luck to all!
I'm at least currently comfortable in Memphis, just waiting to go back to a hopefully un-damaged home. :)
The winds are really starting to pick up now. Ole Jim Cantore said we have 2 hours until the lights go out here in BR.
Very windy still - still cool in my AC watching some fairly huge wind gusts. The coverage is round the clock down here. I'm sort of thinking it'd be nice if it never got any worse than this - iinteresting, but comfortable.
Right now, I'm feeling alright about this. I'm sure my feelings will change once it heads up this way. I pray Lafayette doesn't get it too bad. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers. Like you said Markay, it's pretty calm right now. But like the saying goes, it's the calm before the storm in this area. Grand Isle already has 15 inches of rain. I just hope this thing moves out quickly and doesn't linger around.
Local Baton Rouge news is reporting that water is coming over into the industrial canal in NO. That's not good. I'll post an update when they show pictures.
Check out www.neworleanscitybusiness.com for some from the ground reporting.
The authorities seem unaware, but CNN swears that it is coming through the levee, not just over topping it. Some flooding already occurring.
The wind is pushing water over the levees, but nothing that is causing anything more than minor street flooding - no breach. I have all four local TV stations up and am in contact with a reporter on the ground.
There is a floodgate where water is rushing through, but I'm pretty sure they allow for some leakage to keep the pressure down. CNN is being WAY too sensational. With that said, this is nowhere near over.
CNN is way too destruction oriented, don't listen to half the crap they say about flood walls or leeves....half of those reporters didn't even know what flood wall was till they got down. The wind is pushing water over the wall right now. Those are T wall construction and under the T section there are pillings that go down 60-90 feet, that thing is not going anywhere. Pay attention when the have a local reporter, or some public official, other than that, don't listen so much.
Some media want the destruction to be massive. Then they have more people tuning in, more to report, more shocking.
I recommend if you want to see live coverage, go to:
wwltv.com or wdsu.com
Gustav almost screwed up Dawgbert's wedding. My sister and fiance (now my wife) had planned a cruise and the wedding was going to be in Key West on the first stop and then on to Cozumel. We knew there was no way we were going to Cozumel because we would be sailing back right through the eye.
All went well. We were married on the beach in Key West, ate at Louie's Backyard and then was diverted to Nassau.
Missed the game but for a good cause. We could not get scores at all until Monday. The sports bar carried all the European scores you wanted but nothing American.
This thing sucked for those of us in Baton Rouge. We are now in Ruston. The power is going to be down for a while. We took the heat for 2 days. Then the sun and the humidity came rolling in and things would have been unbearable for us. Will go back Sunday and hopefully have power back up. Lines and transformers and trees on the roads. Lots of trees went down on houses, trapping people in, hurting them. It was worse in Baton Rouge than in New Orleans this time around. No flooding thank goodness. It was so sad on the way up seeing people up here in the north with their houses under water. Y'all got hit pretty bad with this too. Stay safe!
