ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
First, if you didn't get to see this last night you need to watch it. The best high school running back in history.
Second, with all the Cam Newton talk, it was interesting to hear Dupree talk about what he was offered coming out of high school. And that was 25 years ago. And I believe every bit of it.
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
It was a very GOOD watch, one of the best segments they have done....
It was the WILD WILD WEST back then in recruiting - especially in the old SWC and the SEC - I remember some of the stories about what Raymond Tate was offered when everyone was after him coming out of Minden and he ended up going to Houston
Really REALLY good watch
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
Dupree was going for $100K way back then.
No way $200K was all it took to buy Cam Newton.
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
Basically Uncle Curley got $40K and his mom got a new double wide once he signed....
If you haven't watched it you need to, Dupree really keeps your attention throughout the piece

Very interesting from a football and human life/emotion perspective. Dupree was a great football player and a complicated individual. You could tell his brother's ailment affected him deeply and that he felt like he had never done enough to make people happy/proud. It shows you how the best physical tools can be trumped by emotional/mental baggage. A must see.

It comes on again tomorrow I believe.
I was fascinated with this story back in the day. Unfortunately about all we had was AP and Sports Illustrated at the time.
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
One of the best 30 for 30 ones I have seen
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
Dupree comes off as a very redeeming individual in the end...
His handler the Righteous Rev Ken Rainey on the other hand looks and sounds alot like a current Rev in the news right now -
Conspiracy? on the world wide leaders part - makes you say hummmmm:icon_wink:
Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
What ever happened with Dupree's son? A few years ago he was all set to move to S'Port and enroll him in Evangel?

Re: ESPN 30 for 30: Marcus Dupree
That's the only 30 for 30 I haver watched. It was very good. Even some of the coaches who were involved in the recruiting process and were interviewed for this special admitted, or all but admitted, that big money exchanged hands for big recruits.
That's why it is critical that the NCAA fully investiages cases like Cam Newton's. We do not want to return to the days of big money getting the best athletes.

Do you think it ever left?

Yes, I don't think it is nearly as prevalent as it was in those days. I am not saying it doesn't still happen. I am just saying it was very rampant for two decasdes, and now I don't think nearly as much so.

Brother it happens..They are just better at hiding it. Billy Sims and Earl Campbells of the world are not showing up at a kids high school but they get involved. I have heard some horror stories from up here recently that would make your head spin.
