CUSA’s GOR is not going to prevent an interested school, whoever that school possibly could be!, in bouncing for the AAC.
Todd Stewart said as much the day the news broke & @MattBrownEP’s explainer made me believe it even more so.
Yeah, I get that. If they're paying $3 million a year (or more, I think, for the longer-term members) then you can afford $2.4 million or $3.2 million or whatever to leave.
But if it's that meaningless, why bother with the GOR to begin with*.
AND, why agree to it if you have any hope of getting out**?
*I think the answer to why bother if it doesn't help is just the same as any other exit fee agreement - if you leave at least we get some (more) cash out of it.
**Best I can come up with is "just in case it's not us we get some cash."
I mean, in the end all we did was vote in a sliding scale jumbo-double exit fee structure.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
AAC will pluck Liberty with the quickness.
It is probably already a done deal.

The problem with Liberty (granted what I see on message boards) is that university presidents are voting and many are apprehensive about being associated with Liberty.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
Well, if not Liberty, it won’t be Tech up in the rotation.
We should go independent in football and rest of sports in Southland.
We simply don’t have the money or “market” to back the talk of some of our boosters / administrators.

I don't think this happens, but if it does is any Tech fan really broken up about it? They (probably) help the conference on-field. And they (probably) helped us get what we got on the media deal.
But do we care about playing them? I don't.
With the GOR we will get a little extra in exit money, which will be nice. I guess without it, we'd just get the normal exit fees.
Then we replace them with another FCS (or, my preference is just stick with 9). No terrible loss. Worse than not losing them. But nothing like the decimation of losing all basically our whole division. Or everyone in our time zone in '04.

I agree about not being in rotation and market.
I can't disagree more about independence. It would make our situation much worse being independent.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
The CUSA GOR is about to be in trouble from an enforceability standpoint.
We have 4 routes - 2 of those are not really in the cards:
1) AAC - not likely at all
2) SBC - not likely at all
3) CUSA - most likely but not desirable
4) football independent - I could get behind this
It is about to be tough to hold what is left of CUSA together.

I doubt it. Decent chance of no change to CUSA for a while (I agree this is not desirable).
Next most likely outcome is CUSA loses a school or two. If it's not us (and I agree again that this isn't all that likely) but just a school or two, meh. We are maybe a little worse off or maybe a little better off depending on who leaves.
Unless CUSA totally crumbles (and if it outlasted losing 9 teams, it is not going anywhere) Indy is a non-starter.

There is no future for a “football independent” in the FBS.
NONE.
Even ND is feeling pressure right now.
If we did this we might as well drop football (a much better idea) and e all the money in all other sports.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
We could survive a year or two as an indy provided!! it was a transitional period heading into another conference. But not as an indy with no planned/set conference future. Might even do well as an indy, financially, for a year or two, get 5-6 bodybag games and earn $8-10 million.
In the big picture, clearly we have not faired well in all this conference shuffling mess. Some of it has been lousy leadership from our empty suits, and some of it has just been bad luck. Our rural location, where we are geographically have contributed to us being passed over. Can't control that.
I think most Tech fans really just want to see an exciting product on the field. A winning football team that is fun to watch. Given that, our conference affiliation becomes rather irrelevant.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
I hope our AD has been talking to OSU and WSU. The PAC 2 is talking about adding schools to stay alive. I know it's highly unlikely the PAC will survive, but I was equally pessimistic about the CUSA surviving when USM, ODU, and Marshall left. Were the PAC able to raid the MWC, maybe they would need another school to reach a certain number. I know this has a remote possibility of happening but it couldn't hurt to let them know of our availability and interest.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
Oregon State & Washington won’t leave the PAC for 2 years. If they can convince some MWC teams to come over, but I don’t think they will be able. Those names don’t want to go there without the big boys
Quote:
The best case scenario for the Pac-12 might involve stealing from both the Mountain West (Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Air Force, Colorado State) and the AAC (Tulane, Memphis). But even if they strike out on rebuilding from the rubble, there’s a chance that they could survive as a two-team conference in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Conferences must have at least eight members, according to NCAA bylaws, but they’re allowed a two-year window to rebuild. Notably, Mountain West members become free agents in 2026.

It would make sense for the Sunbelt to add WKU to the eastern group and Tech to the western group. Would put them at 16 teams overall, 7 opponents from west in football plus a game against an eastern opponent every year. Every game in driving distance except the eastern game.
Would probably be a two bid conference in the NCAA tournament plus a good baseball conference. It’s not going to happen, but it would be a conference that worked.

You're talking crazy talk there. Nothing in college football makes sense anymore.
Re: Colorado back to Big XII
There is no upward future for Tech sports. We’re done. Guice and his shitty hires and their shitty hires have doomed Tech long term.
