I completely agree. I could see the super conferences being formed and the left overs from C-USA,Big 12-2, MWC and some preferred WAC and SBC schools forming a new conference.
The only thing that worries me is where LA Tech fits in when all of the conference shuffling ends and who would be in this new conference. I do not see the better football schools in CUSA or MWC lasting as a non AQ.
Re: Rick Perry Texas Gov says A&M considering SEC
Might even be an opportunity for the top 16 non AQs to band together and form their own new conference...
Re: Rick Perry Texas Gov says A&M considering SEC
If ND were to join the Big 10(-3) or any conference with Texas does anyone else see the begining of the ULTRA Conference? A conference made up of schools that make their own network profitable? (Don't be ignorant and think that the Alabama's & USCs of the world are NOT looking into making their own deal like Texas did!)

Oklahoma, with a state population of only 3.7M, does NOT have the national following or the number of TV sets that Texas, Notre Dame, and even BYU has. (BYU has a national following due to their Mormon connection.) Oklahoma can crow all it wants about establishing it's "own TV network", but the fact remains that the Sooners are from a small market state, and none of the TV networks are going to pay Oklahoma "Texas-type" money to set up their own TV network. It's apples and oranges.

Don't be ignorant and think the Alabama's of the world can get a deal like Texas did. It won't happen. Just like my last post above regarding Oklahoma, Alabama is from a small market state, and does NOT have the national fan base that Texas, Notre Dame or BYU has. USC on the other hand, probably does.
For ESPN to pay a school $300 Million TV deal (such as Texas received), the network must be assured of getting a significant return on its' substantial investment (ROI). That means there better be a ton of TV sets watching every Saturday. A small state like Alabama (pop. 4.7M) or Oklahoma (pop. 3.7M) just won't support the same ROI that a large state like Texas (pop. 24M) will.
This is what I was referring to a couple of months ago when I stated "some traditional powerhouses, including some SEC schools, are about to feel like 2nd class citizens."

Actually, Alabama already has that kind of deal and has had it for several years i fact. Called the Crimson Tide Sports Network or CTSN. Its channel 573, here in Oklahoma City, comes included with the SEC package (I pay about 25 dollars extra a month for the package). They carry every home and away football games as well as the other sports.

Yes, but not for the type of money that UT is receiving, I bet....
I do agree that there will be more separate contracts, but not for the amount Texas is receiving for it - plus, I think schools in the SEC have to share the revenue with conference mates.
Re: Rick Perry Texas Gov says A&M considering SEC
I don't think anyone has talked about this yet, but UT won't be leaving the big 12 any time soon because of the Longhorn network. Friends that are in the know at UT have told me that the biggest thing about the network deal is that if UT leaves the big 12 for any reason, the deal automatically goes away. They aren't allowed to take the network with them to other conferences. So if they leave or become Indy, all of that money goes away.

Don't count on them not being able to re-negotiate that. While I do not think they are leaving anytime soon, I do think that if enough teams are pulled from the B12, you will see Texas go Indy. They will re-negotiate the contract and be fine.

Must be one heck of a share considering I have a channel for each of the SEC schools. I have a classmate that has the same package and he lives in Seattle so I would imagine SEC sports is catching on all over the country.
Re: Rick Perry Texas Gov says A&M considering SEC
Guys, even with the LHN, UT will not go independent. No way! Just ask Deloss Dodds! He knows that they will never be a factor on the NC, if they have to play an independent schedule. How are they going to get a full schedule in MBB, WBB, or baseball as an independent???
They can do it by keeping the B12 together andthey will have to eat some 'humble pie' to do that, like for instance go back to 12 and get the championship game back.
Like I was saying earlier in the week, they will ask BYU, AFA and now most likely UofH to come on board and partner with the other TX schools, while allowing OU & OSU to partner with the north schools (their wrestling buddies) to have their own division (and an OU network - although much smaller in scope the the LHN). The championship game will no likely be at 'Jerry World' one year and in KC the next (or even in the dome in StL)- depends on the 'benjamin's'.
There will be life after TAMU bailing out, and it will start this year with OU probably playing in the BCS championship, this year and next!

I thought I read in some article that the contract provides for them to go independent.

I didn't catch that, but don't doubt it one bit. Regardless, they can do it if they want to do it.
To Dr.Twister: As for the other schools and conferences around the country (including the SEC), those are not NEARLY the amount that Texas just signed for and they have to share it with their conference. It is a MUCH different arrangement than Texas just made.

Yeah, but would they stay if Mizzou, OU, and OSU all leave? Would they stay if KU and Texas Tech also left? I say no to both.
