Pick one, I guess. Ruston already has a Hampton. Waldorf and Conrad are way too high end for Ruston. Hilton is probably out of the question as well even though Lafayette (with its size) has one.
Of the remaining choices, my preferences would be Embassy Suites or Doubletree. I haven't stayed in a Homewood Suites or Home2 Suites to have an opinion on them.
Hilton Garden Inns are very "cookie cutter". Always clean but not really my preference, and I've stayed in a bunch of them.
If I had to guess though, I'd say it would be the Garden Inn. That seems to be the next "step up" over Hamptons.

the back east side pad where the retaining wall is and the old budget inn used to be.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
For the most authentic Mexican food in Ruston (or really almost anywhere around here) check out La Bamba. Have been several times and the food has been just great. It's in the old Olde Mexico location.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
As a general rule I don't eat Mexican food north of the Red River. That mostly applies to Oklahoma for us Texans. So I guess east of the Red River does't count as north since Ruston is south of the Oklahoma border.

As a Texas-ex...specifically a South Texas-ex, I am a self-anointed Mexican Food snob. There was a time a few years ago that you just couldn't find good COMIDA in North Louisiana...but thanks to the significant increase in our Hispanic population, you can now find some VERY good Mexican food in our area.

Not sure how good it is, but you can find Mexican food on EVERY corner in our area. You place an order and they have it back out to you before you can dunk a chip in the salsa.
Iron Cactus in Calhoun has great "Tex-Mex" style food. I heard they also had great "grown up green icees"

I think they're one of the better places for sure. I also like Fiesta Linda in Sterlington's Molcajete Laredo, served in the lava-rock bowl. I hear good things about El Sombrero on Restaurant Row in WM, but haven't tried them yet. Was a big fan of El Jarrito in Ruston, then they got "big"...our Farmerville restaurant is still pretty good...but they've grown to so many locations so quickly, I'm concerned they've lost their edge. Wife LOVES Habanero Grill in West Monroe, and is trying to get me to go, but I rarely get to WM...have you tried them yet?

Don't wa$te your time at Habanero Grill. The place in downtown Rayville is the bomb.

Love Iron Cactus! It's run by two guys who worked for years at Ernesto's in Monroe. Similar, and some same, (rice!) recipes, but without the grunge. Ant the grown-up green icees are great--the frozen ones are more like whipped and frothy than frozen, not terribly thick, so you can drink them quickly if you're so inclined. Well, so I've heard. :icon_wink:

I'll second Dawgpix on skipping Habaneros. The food is just alright and the atmosphere is weird. Seems like more of a watering hole than a family restaurant to me. If you're going to be in that general area and want Mexican, go to Don Tomas on 6th in Monroe. Get the tongue tacos or the pork chile verde. Best tomatillo sauce I've had outside of south Texas.
Pueblo Viejo is really good also, although I haven't been there since their remodel a few weeks ago- heard a management and menu change accompanied the physical changes and that prices went up pretty considerably. I hope they kept the all day, every day 2-for-1 margaritas going.
El Sombrero is pretty good, if a little more Americanized since they first opened. Go there on non-peak hours too, unless noisy, birthday-party infested restaurants are your thing. Margaritas are extremely sour. Get the #55 if you want a taste of everything, just be sure to have someone to share it with. Huge portions.

For out of the area (Ruston area) has anyone been to El Bruno's in Cuba New Mexico? I got the impression it is kind of the Mexican equivalent of Does Eat Place because people from all over make it a point to stop there. Found that place by accident one time when I decided to go through Albuquerque instead of Santa Fe coming back from Colorado. Had some kind of stuffed Pablano pepper that was the best I've ever had.
In Ruston I know a few people that say they love the Mexican food trailer in the Backus parking lot.

Long-term, I agree. It's still a novelty for a few northside Monroe circles, but that'll wear off eventually. Most see it as too expensive for what you get.

Count me as one of those. Tried it once for lunch. The menu was not priced. This ain't New Orleans. I got a salad. It was horrible and it cost me almost $10 with water.
I do hope the old Ernesto's location makes it.

Same here. I hope the new place actually announces the opening and tries to make use out of the patio space. Monroe could use another seafood place that relies more on creole/cajun recipes rather than just truckfulls of fried stuff. Nothing wrong with Catfish Charlie's and the like, but we have enough of that. It's easy to fry stuff. I'm hoping for something like Copelands, but without the perceived frills and pink lighting, lol.

I've always liked Waterfront and their menu. I like the "nothing fried" concept.

Cory's other place, Cotton, is thriving. Different food, but a similar upscale concept. Surely you have not forgotten there are enough pretentious folks in North Monroe to make something like that. And they love them some Cory Bahr! (actually, so do I)

I would guess not. It depended a lot on the tourist trade and tha's gone away. The last time I was there was in 1973 passing through on a road trip to Acapulco. This was before all the other places like Puerta Villarta became famous. Did it in a Triumph Spitfire with by best friend now for over 40 years.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I heard this week the dirt work behind Walmart is a Chick-Fil-A. I find that hard to believe as that is such an out-of-the way place, so I don't want to spread the rumor if that's not what it is (which I guess I am doing). Just take it with a grain of salt until others know better.
What is going on with Pizza Inn? Haven't been that way in quite a while if there's anything to see from the outside.

I can 100% guarantee it is not a Chik-fil-a.

You probably know this but, Chick-fil-a doesn't use the franchise model, but an operator/employee model, no equity is built into the business. The operator does get a certain percentage of the sales but has no ownership over the business

That certain person has pull and may could get it done, but I don't think he has that much. It certainly wouldn't be as sure a thing as you insinuate. There are two lists and Ruston is on neither one.

Asking because Fox's Pizza is doing VERY well in many locations across Louisiana and East Texas. I know two Fox's franchisees and they are all smiles, and looking to expand with new locations.

Johnny's
Pizza Inn
Dominoes
Papa Johns
Fox's
Little Caesars
Pizza Hut
Roma
A couple Papa Murphy's places
Rotolo's - Pending
Did I miss one?
Ruston is a little saturated, the two (technically 3 if you count PH) buffet's, cheapness of Little Caesars, Fox's doesn't deliver, and they have expensive space = tough to compete.

Thanks Landon! And thanks Dwayne!
Here is the info I posted to social media this morning:
Kristen and I are thrilled, humbled, honored, and so thankful for the opportunity to join the Chick-fil-A family. Last Friday, October 17, I had my Final Interview (which awesomely enough is a Couples Interview where Kristen got to travel with me -- and she did AWESOME in the interview) in Atlanta and was selected as the Owner/Operator for the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Stillwater, Oklahoma. We will be relocating sometime in January 2015 to begin this exciting, new adventure!
I have sold the BBQ restaurant to Christopher Brister and his wife, Tori, who will continue the commitment to quality that the original Dowling's Smokehouse, and the current Dowling's Smokehouse BBQ, have become known for. The name of the business will change to Brister's Smokehouse BBQ, because that was a stipulation my Grandfather Dowling had for me if I ever got out of the business, but the menu and food will remain the same. My final day as owner will be Friday, October 31. I very much appreciate and value the relationships that I have had the pleasure to form through my ownership of Dowling's. I look forward to continuing our friendships and hope that you will come visit me at Chick-fil-A if ever in the Stillwater area. Hopefully, La Tech and Oklahoma State can figure out a way to play each other in football and many of you will travel to the game.
Thank-you for 11 great years! May The Lord bless each one of you.
Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Chris and Tori as they embark on their new journey! Please support this local business and this great, local family!

Wow. Congratulations and good luck to the new owners.
Thanks for bringing Dowlings out of retirement.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Best wishes to you and your family in the new venture.
Dowling's has been a traditional pregame or postgame meal for many basketball and baseball seasons. Glad to have someone selling BBQ in that location. I hope it remains as good.

Uh, I'm pretty sure everyone knew Kristen would nail the interview. I think it was you everyone was worried about. :D

The Final Interview was actually my 5th with corporate staff and I have said from the very first one, "If I can just make it to the Final, Kristen will bring it home!" CFA is an incredible corporation to go into business with and we are so blessed to have this opportunity. Thanks again!

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
So what's the name of the new business to locate in that land where Dowlings is located? A Penny Press (yes!), I've heard.

Dawgpix, 1.5 acres on the corner was purchased by Evans Oil Co. out of Monroe. Their original plan was to build a gas station and a 5,000 sf restaurant, of which is their original concept, called "The Daily Press." (they actually have a prototype Daily Press location on Hwy 165 North that does extremely well) I have heard the project has been delayed slightly and that they may start on the project sometime around June or July 2015.
Who knows what will become of the remaining property! Your guess is as good as mine.

Dowling's is the ONLY place I ever actually use the bbq sauce.
Today's ribs were astounding.

Looks like there will be a grocery store (most likely a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Store) and gas station built on California Avenue next door to the Taco Bell.

The pulled pork and brisket were quite appetizing today also.

Do you have one of Luke McCown to Erick Franklin to beat OSU? That one would probably be a big hit.
