I cringe every time I hear it. It is so wrong in so many ways.
People who drive slow in the left lane, then speed up after they move over to let you "pass."
Wait staff at a restaurant who are younger than you calling you "sweetie", "hun", or "dear". I don't know you and may never see you again. Sir would be nice. There are several older men who I know very well and respect greatly. When I see them, I may greet them with,"Hey there young man!" But I have developed that relationship where they know it is a term of endearment.
The immediate switch people do when someone steps even the slightest bit out of lockstep.
