As for water temps. well, the Gulf is 1.5 F (on average)cooler this year vs. 2005. The area of the north-central Gulf, between 250-500 miles south of Louisiana, was 88F in 05 and about 86F this year. That's the region where Katrina strengthed, only to weaken again just before making landfall. (I saw that on the Weather Channel recently).
Part of the reason the gulf is cooler, slightly, but still WAY above the temp needed for a system to grow, is because of all the rain and cloud cover this summer.
I check temps. They are slightly lower in the Gulf, but way above normal over the last 100 years and certainly high enough to produce a Cat 5 in a heartbeat.
Now, Katrina did weaken slightly before landfall. It did move from water that was near 90 into water that was around 85. That is part of the reason that she couldnt sustain cat 5++. But remember, she moved north the last 24-36 hrs before landfall, after a consistent nw track, because she was picked up by an upper low. That caused most of the dry air/shear/weakening that took her down to a strong cat 3 at landfall.
So what Im saying is that there is not 1 square inch in the gulf cool enough to inhibit growth from any system. Other factors would have to be present.
In fact, the waters of the gulf are warm enough these days to support systems almost year round. See 2005........

exactly. that includes this year. so why don't we have hurricanes year 'round?
Re: Global Warming Cont...
Alta, are you giddy today? I am because a storm gained 50 mph in 15 hours and now Dawg80 might believe in manmade Global warming. I am giddy all over.

That was impressive, historic, unheard of, etc... But just wait. Im pretty certain the fireworks have just begun this year.
This looks like an upper low, well, because thats what it is. The problem is that it will have the ENTIRE Gulf to work with. 84, 85, 87 degree water.
Jerry is the next name, I believe.

You have to watch out for the one's with that name.:D The last time we had one named Jerry it went ashore for a couple of days then returned to the ocean. BTW, did you notice that monster storm right off Florida's east coast?

That energy is a part of the upper low. We/I/they are expecting a low to start to develop at the surface about 125 miles sw of Tampa.....
Stay tuned for Jerry, Jerry.
Re: Global Warming Cont...
It appears the storm is coming together as planned. Expect rapid development over the next 24-36 hours...

If you believe GW is real, stop sitting around trying to convince people it's real. That's WASTING time by your own words and standards. Work at solving the problems it will create, infiltrate government and business to prevent it (if possible, not likely),
etc. Trying to tell someone GW is real without giving a tangible solution on how to prevent/help/calm/whatever it will NEVER work...
If you believe GW is not real, stop arguing it isn't and keep doing what your doing. Work on the present and the future and fix the major problems we already have...

oh no you didn't...
did you just come on a political message board and say, "stop arguing"?
the global warming crowd will never accomplish their goals without convincing the majority of people that they are right.
if you don't believe in manmade global warming, then you have good reason to fight some of the stupid stuff the global warming crowd wants to do (kyoto protocal comes to mind).
