Re: Stress Free Saturdays
Liberty outlasted New Mexico State 49-35 last night in the CUSA championship. It was a talented and entertaining game to watch even with the officials not calling NMS’s blatant holding. Anyway the real point is the blaringly obvious one that Tech is light years away from being anywhere near competitive with the upper echelon teams in CUSA and probably even the mid tier teams too. Tech fans may not see a winning team for 10 years, if ever, as things are now.

Was switching back and forth between this game and the Wash-Ore game. Right now Tech athletics, as a whole, is sitting at rock bottom. MBB has shown some glimmers of hope, but come March, just more mediocrity I'm sure. Baseball? I have never been a fan of Burroughs, he's an under-achiever IMO. With tons of talent he's moderately "successful." Without that level of talent he's a loser.
Right now I fully expect Crummy's bunch to go 0-12 next year. A "good" year for Crummy will be 2-10.
Re: Stress Free Saturdays
You’re dead on regarding Burroughs. He mismanages things just right to keep his teams from doing what they’re really capable of. Sadly, since I’m holding out hope once again that the players achieve in spite of Tech’s inept coaching I bought my season tickets and am already crossing my fingers. I would’ve never believed that a Tech team could go 0-12 but I’m seeing it looking more and more likely. Tech may even have some 2 way players next year with as thin as its talent is going to be.

We need to be pulling for SMU so Liberty gets a NY6 game don’t we?

SMU won. But some are saying SMU should leapfrog Liberty because LU's strength of schedule is 133rd out of 133 schools. CUSA champion is dead last in SOS. Whoa!
Re: Stress Free Saturdays
As an ex player way back when, we were junky, but we also had one of the best defenses in the conference, im sorry we were independent, in the country at the time and we held the national champion Alabama team to one punt return and two field goals. I know there is still hope, I just can’t figure out how we get back to those days. Since then, it’s all been about offense, but the only way we competed back then because we had some bad ass defensive players, still go Dawgs!

Yep, had some stout defenses back then. As I recall Bama had to vacate/forfeit that win due to an ineligible player. Officially a W for the Dawgs now. And that punt returner was David Palmer...is that right? My memory ain't what it used to be.

Yes sir, Double Deuce they called him back then, my brother-in-law had a chance to tackle him just as he caught the punt, but he got his ankles broken, by Palmer, and then I lost contain and chased him into the end zone, but he kind of blew my doors off anyway, it was a really fun game, but I’m not giving up hope on the dogs anytime soon.

I was at that Alabama game. We had one of the best defenses in the country. Wasn’t John Thompson DC?
Re: Stress Free Saturdays
Now this was 30 years ago plus, but if my memory serves me right, JT was our DC in 91 and then Art Kaufman came over from Ole Miss and was our DC in 92, I think that’s right

Those were fun times. I was friends with JRP and traveled with the team to several out of town games - South Carolina when we had the pre-game brawl for one.
Re: Stress Free Saturdays
That’s awesome. I haven’t seen JRP in about 15 years. I ran into him at the mall in Dallas, but he still recognized me, my stupid now brother-in-law, Andy Boyd started that fight on the kick off of that game. Also, one of Sam’s sons sent me over copies of all of the JRP shows that I still have now it’s pretty awesome, good memories. You gotta luv it !

I'm actually a little encouraged after what I've seen this week during conference championship week:
- Long time deadbeat New Mexico State played Liberty for a CUSA conference championship this week.
- Long time dead beat UNLV played Boise St for a Mountain West Conference championship this week.
- SMU --a team LA Tech beat down 51-10 in the 2017 Frisco Bowl-- won the AAC Conference championship this week.
- Liberty University, a school very few of us ever heard of 5 years ago, just won a trip to a New Year's Day Bowl.
The point is, there WILL BE LIFE for LA Tech football after the Sonny Cumbie era ends. All of these teams faced the same "Transfer Portal" issues and "NIL recruiting" issues, etc....that LA Tech faces, and yet they figured out a way to have very successful seasons. We just need some Tech leaders to grow some balls, make a few tough business decisions with personnel, and GET OUT OF THE WAY.

I was at that game too, in Birmingham. Tech had a very good defense that year and held its' ground defensively. On the other hand, our offense was no match for Bama.
I remember at one point early in the 4th quarter, Tech was trailing Bama 6-0, and forced a Bama fumble at the Crimson Tide 3-yd line. When the Tech offense was running onto the field to huddle, I turned to my buddy next to me and said, "Can you believe it's the 4th Quarter, and Tech is about to take the lead on the best team in the country?" We were both foolish enough to think that LA Tech could score a TD against Bama from only 3 yards out to take the lead 7-6. But nope. I don't remember exactly what happened, but I know LA Tech didn't score on that drive. Never did. All day. Later, David Palmer ran his punt back to pay dirt and it was game over. Tech lost 13-0.
