Thanks. I was hoping that was all it was. I really didn't like that carwash squashed in there so close to the road with that other building stuck in behind it. Was hoping it wasn't something new crammed in there. Was glad when they tore the carwash down. Looks so much better.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I don't remember seeing anyone parked there that ever used the thing. It seemed to be just be covered parking.

I hope they will be re-using that groovy little Mid-Century building.
The low-slope gable roof, the "wing" style extended eaves, the floor-to-ceiling windows with the thin metal frames -- all are character-defining elements MCM commercial style.

the shell of the building is there. That roof and everything under it is gone. It is more like JJ other standalone locations.

Near Cranfords, apparently a church (Cathedral Of Praise). Pinsons, a local private investor, unknown purpose.

I'd put them pretty much at the bottom of the sandwich store market. Others like them, of course, but I think their bread is really bland. I'd pick pretty much any sandwich store (including Subway) over them.

The thing I like about Jimmy Johns is the unwhich. You can get any of their sandwiches with no bread, instead they are wrapped in lettuce. Before you laugh, think about it. You can actually taste all the other ingredients better, especially if you get double-meat or the gargantuan - Im trying to cut out carbs and they actually taste really good.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Not sure this is the best place to post this, but this young lady introduced me to Dowling's in Ruston in 1979. She was a sweet person who I have not seen in almost 40 years but when I heard about her death today I thought about this. Some of you Ruston folks will remember her.

That's good to know. I've been cutting back carbs a lot (and running) to get my weight down. Gives me another option in Ruston.

mamail32Our big day finally is here. When we moved to Ruston we wanted to give back like we did in Utah. Working on this project through government funding which took almost 5yrs to get. Lots of paperwork. It will be nice to be able to help our community with affordable housing. We would of loved being with @utahjazz today to celebrate but scheduling was already set. Want to Thank our town of Ruston @cityofruston@rustoncvb being so patient and so supportive with all our projects and dreams we have to make Ruston a town people can come and enjoy themselves. With @louisianatech @louisianatravel@gramfamshoutouts our college student body is growing so we need housing for them to. I really wish they would develop more apartment complexes near downtown. It would help bring much more foot traffic, business, and life to downtown Ruston. I'm sure many students would like to be able to walk to downtown bars and restaurants instead of driving and parking.

They are drinking too. I drank in bars when I was under 21, it's not that difficult.
Anyway ts not just bars, but restaurants, clothes shops, barber shops, and other businesses downtown would have more foot traffic.

How about a bar on campus in the Student Center, then. UH has one. I remember sipping a few cold ones while watching the Coogs play in the NCAA tournament back when. Of course the Student Bar Association had free draft beer every Thursday between the day and night classes.

My thoughts. Of course Lincoln Parish was not dry before prohibition (1919?) as far as I know. Local option elections were held when prohibition was repealed in 1933. However, I believe the La. Supreme Court overturned all parish wide local options sometimes in the seventies saying they weren't "local" enough. Parish local option elections that voted by ward or precinct were not overturned. When I was growing up (in wholly dry Red River Parish) there were parts of Natchitoches Parish which were "dry" and some which were "wet". I don't know of any others like that but there must have been some.

Well, not to be captain obvious, but it was not. I don't know the history of the Tonk, only that there was an older building there before the current student center was built about 1957. Guys older than me and DS15 will have to give the history.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
No doubt.
I was just curious about Dawgonit's "wet" claim.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I'll be honest, I wasn't there and I don't have any proof. It was the story told to me as a student to understand why the it was called the Tonk. Does anyone know why it's called the Tonk then?
Maybe the same people that said the original bulldog was buried under the seal started the story about the Tonk's name.

My brother referred to lower Tolliver as the tonk while he was at TECH in the 60's. At least that is what I remember. He said it was the place to be!

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I was there in the middle to late 60s and we referred to the Student Center as the Tonk. I ate in Lower Tollver my freshman year and never heard it referred to as the Tonk.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I did some googling and found a little on the TONK. There was a book about Ruston that had some old pictures of Tech and showed one of a very long low wooden frame building. The note says it was built in the late 40's after WWII and was called the TONK because it looked like a "honky tonk", especially on the inside with low ceilings. The book was just titled RUSTON and I couldn't print or save any pages. I just googled "louisiana tech" and tonk.

That's how I understood it and the current student center was nicknamed The Tonk as time went on.

That's what i thought. Was there 68-73 and my siblings before that and never called any part of tolliver the Tonk. That was the student center across the street. Ate cold foods, sandwiches, etc., on main floor of toliver and hot foods at wilson. Not sure we ever went downstairs in tolliver but must have since you said you ate in lower tolliver about that same time. At one point it was mainly sandwiches or breakfast finger food. Had to go to wilson for eggs, waffles, etc., or real food. Needless to say, i didn't make that trek too often at the crack of dawn.

Actually they closed Tolliver completely for maybe a year 1966-1967 before reopening it for the sandwiches, etc. about the time you were there. Wilson was right across Tech Drive from the men's dorms so it wasn't a trek for us. (Classes were a different matter)
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
In the late '70's for sure, and probably other years, the Student Center was "the Tonk." Below Tolliver, in the basement, accessible by stairs outside, was "the Coffeehouse," where they had live music and would show movies with free popcorn on Friday nights. Yes, they sold coffee and soft drinks there as well.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Sometime during 1971-75, lower Tolliver was turned into a coffee shop type setting with acts that performed there. I remember Martin Mull performed his routine one night. It was open all night during finals with free coffee and snacks.

Ok, thanks. I thought i didn't remember eating downstairs. And, yeah, y'all were lucky, depending on what you thought of the food in Wilson, as it was a very long haul for us from Kidd or any girls' dorm besides South Hall.

Was Adams Hall cafeteria open when you were there? When I started in fall 1965 we had Upper Tolliver (main dining) Lower Tolliver, Adams and a serving line in the student center where day students (non dorm) could buy about the same lunch as at Tolliver. It seems like there was even a lower level in Tolliver where the "training table" was for student athletes could eat during their season. The food was generally decent as the cafeterias were run by Morrison's. It just got boring day after day meal after meal.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
No Adams Cafeteria when i was there. Just had PE in the old women's gym in that same area. There was a cafeteria with really good food in the student center where mostly faculty ate, and probably some students. I assume that's the one you're talking about. I think the football players had their steaks in the lower, mysterious part of wilson seems like, but it might have been tolliver. I do remember when you could use your meal ticket at the grill in the student either friday or sunday night and get a delicious ribeye meal--or we thought it was good and a treat at the time anyway.

The Coffeehouse was cool! It had a great atmosphere, down in the damp basement. Felt like a getaway place, a place to relax. Had some great acts over the years.
Later, around 1980, they moved The Coffeehouse to a place in the Tonk. It didn't work. Lost that intimate atmosphere.
