I doubt the band will ever live up to what they did with Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, either, so I am trying to hard not to think about those albums and judge this one on its own right.
Bought the album on Friday.
It definitely doesn't compare to the older stuff. Sounds like Billy's voice has gotten weaker. Doesn't have the power it used to (Attribute it to age, i assume).
A lot of the songs sound the same. It's not a bad album by any means, just not old-school Punkins'.
The new drummer isn't bad. It's hard to compare the 2 when the songs are so different. Dude's got chops, though. Not bad on the kit.

Billy's voice is definitely weaker, and the songwriting has gotten worse, IMO. "The Celestials" is the only song that really strikes me as a Pumpkin's quality song. There are some songs on the new album that are just plain bad. The new drummer is definitely very good (and very young). He plays fast like Jimmy, but does not play with the same kind of jazziness that Jimmy did.

I'm also not a big fan of the 'Coldplay-esque' electronic intros on "One Diamond, One Heart" and "Pinwheels".

+1. Also not a fan of the punk rock elements in "The Chimera". It is like they ripped off the worst parts of Coheed and Cambria. If they are too old to be edgy, they are far too old for punk rock. "Wildflower" is probably the worst song on the album.
"Quasar" and "Panopticon" are pretty good. The drum part of "Violet Rays" is very Coheedish circa Neverender ("Everything Evil", "Time Consumer" and "Neverender"), which I happen to like, but it was better when Coheed did it.
In the end, I think Pumpkin's are no longer relevant and that makes me sad because they are one of my favorite bands.

How Jazz Was Born - From the 1948 movie "A Song Was Born"
So many incredible musicians playing in that one song. Gives me chills.
Trumpet - Louis Armstrong
Trombone - Tommy Dorsey
Vibes - Lionel Hampton
Clarinet - Benny Goodman
Drums - Louis Bellson
Is the sax player Stan “The Sound” Getz? I'm having a hard time placing him.

Cool! Thanks! I saw Cannonball Adderly (sp?) and Boots Randolf both play the sax as a teenager. Great stuff!

Hum - Pinch & Roll
One of the hidden and virtually lost jewels of 90s music. The only semi-professional review I have seen of the album gave it a 2 out of 5 stars. http://www.allmusic.com/album/electra-2000-mw0000106123 The things that the reviewer hate about the album are the things that make this album so awesome (okay, honestly I don't think it is better than the following two albums, but the rawness of their indie label debut album works very well with the rest of their unfortunately-short catalogue). Curious what any drummer thinks about the review. Read and listen and give me your perspective.

I'm pleased to inform you that we played the hell outta some Hum records on KLPI in the late 90s.
