Lo up. Brings up Cyber Innovation Center. Compares to Huntsville, Alabama.
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Lo Walker, Mayor of Bossier City, is speaking in support of the merger.
He is also speaking on behalf of Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover who cannot be here yet. Cedric may make it later.
Mayor Walker talking about cyber innovation and research. Says it needs Tech.

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Interim LSU System president Bill Jenkins speaks in opposition of the merger, but he envies Tech.
"Shreveport need its own major public research university."

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Starts associating LSU and LSUS. After Fanin and many others say that the money IS NOT THERE, Marsala asks why LSUS can't get funding...

SBC does want a research university, but System and BoR won't let them grow...

Importing programs...
His arguements all seem slapdash compared to the proponents...

So far, the proponents seem to have a VERY strong case. I haven't heard anything earth shattering or non-transparent from the anti-merger crowd.

Keeps saying Shreveport needs it's own 4 year research institution. Wouldn't a merger give Shreveport one???

Yes, and the LSU plan does not. He's contradicting himself.
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
He's essentially saying Tech can't give Shreveport a strong 4 year research university.
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
So we have all the LOCAL people supporting the merger, and some guy who "has spent a lot of time in Shreveport-Bossier" --but doesn't live there-- opposing it?
Nice. :icon_roll:

Which wouldn't that indirectly support the merger? Get away from the LSU system BoR and into a system that will foster growth.
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Now saying study was Anti-Shreveport Anti-LSUS...
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Marsala's just doing his job, his arguement is based on how they've been held down, does nothing to address the needs of the city, dwindling budget or enrollment.... He sound's half-hearted...
-
Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Marsala is STILL playing the blame game. He doesn't present a single reason why keeping the status quo is better than the merger. He wants LSUS to become a national research university.

Doesn't matter how we got here.........only matters that the area needs a 4-year RESEARCH university, and the state can't afford to put money into a new one. Merging with Tech is best alternative.

So the state is supposed to table this issue, thereby potentially costing it MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars, simply because this clown (Jenkins) isn't up to speed and he ADMITTEDLY, hasn't done his homework?

Louisiana Federation of Teachers against, everyone else against are LSU-Shreveport alums, no one else speaking against?

Several LSUS faculty, coaches, and staff are present in opposition but don't want to speak.

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Somebody is disputing Marsala's testimony of the BoR blocking new LSUS programs. He said the BoR gave them initial approval, but LSUS never followed through with bringing them back for final approval. Shame on them. He said LSUS can't just apply to be a doctoral university. They have to earn it.

That's just more evidence that LSUS doesn't know what they are doing.

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Rep. Edwards says that it's troublesome that Marsala and that guy have irreconcilable contradicting testimonies. He doesn't know what to do.
The guy says that Marsala initially supported the merger, and then 2 weeks later he was vehemently against it.

That was the BoR head I think, basically called out Marsala for supporting this initially and now flipping....
Also, calling out that BoR did not block LSUS but that LSUS hasn't followed through...

She's actually asking some very good questions about "legacy costs", etc.... She wants to confirm that there won't be any surprise costs over the 3-5 year merger period.
