1. Overall CUSA record.
2. Head-to-head.
3. Winning percentage in division.

I'm pretty sure that's the standard for 2 division conferences in football. It's one (of several) reasons I'm not crazy about having so many teams per "conference."
And it's why you used to hear SEC fans complain about their system with the permanent rivalries (at least the ones with good programs for rivals, didn't ever hear much complaining about whoever gets Vandy or Kentucky every year).
CUSA is actually even less fair than normal this season because our divisions are unbalanced, so some teams from the East aren't even playing all their division-mates.

Ostensibly, all the teams in a given conference are at roughly the same level of competitiveness. That's why they elected to associate with one another.
But you don't know who the tougher teams in a given season until the season begins. The previous year's results might help one make an educated guess, but the schedules are made years in advance.

Having not paid that much attention but having a peripheral interest in the SEC, I always thought the division champions were determined by division record but apparently that's incorrect. I also always assumed the fuss about the permanent out of conference mates was that it made being undefeated/one-loss more difficult and therefore making getting into the BCS harder.
I guess I assumed that because the NFL division record is the only thing that matters in division rankings unless there's a tie.

And unless you're using the traditional rivals model (which would make no sense in the current CUSA) they're random and they rotate and (starting next season) it's only 2/8 games anyway.
But yeah, it sure can affect divisional races (Rice has to go to Marshall, we don't this season).
By the time you get to 14 teams (or 12 in my humble opinion) a conference starts looking more like the way the NFL uses the word then the way the NCAA has traditionally used the word. Eventually, we may end up at a point where divisions within bigger conferences basically become what we used to refer to as "conferences."

One more wave of conference expansion and we'll be there. 7 team divisions already share conferences with teams they barely play.

NFL division champs are decided by overall record - tie-breakers use division rankings

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION
If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Last year, Cincy had a worse division record than Pitt and won division.
Cowboys had best NFC East division record (5-1) and did not win division
Lions had best NFC North record and did not win division
Two Clubs- Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).

- Best net points in common games.
- Best net points in all games.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).

Noon the day after Christmas is pretty rough for people coming from out of town. You either have to spend Christmas in Dallas or leave super early the day after Christmas.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
True but I think the Indy Bowl is Dec 27th! I sure would like for our fans to make a Bowl
a priority vs always finding an excuse for not attending! But they are used to it for Home
football games! Many think of Tech as small and by their actions make it appear that way!

You would have to understand the dynamics of whom will attend Tech games and where. Our Indy Bowl crowds are generally our season ticket holding fanatics, local Shreveport-Bossier area alumni that don't normally care about regular season football games or will not make the committment to drive to Ruston, several thousands Tech students (that live in Shreveport/Bossier area and their friends, the casual football fan with no ties to Tech but will support a bowl game once a year and several thousand LSU fans and/or bandwaggon fans that cannot get tix to wherever LSU is playing. This usually amounts to 30K to 40k there for us at the Indy Bowl.
A regular season game in Shreveport will not garner the same support from non-Tech fans unless we are playing a top 20 team & have a legitimate opportunity to win. See games against Miami, SMU, Cal...etc. Also, games here tend to be light on support from some of our regular Ruston attendees.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
Marshall is now showing up as a projected team for one of the Selection Committee bowls on some lists since East Carolina lost yesterday. Very interesting. Two "experts" are showing LA Tech going to the Independence Bowl. If Marshall goes to a "big" bowl and we win the West, do we get to choose where we go? It seems like it should work that way.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
Wasn't going to post in this thread until we became elgible. I think IF we make it to the championship game we will end up in Dallas, win or lose. We win, I believe we get first choice. We lose, Marshall may go to a bigger bowl. If they don't, I could see their coaching staff rewarding their undefeated season with a trip to the Bahamas. With that said, still way too much season left to have any clue.

. Love the positive energy-- you are very astute -- we are only averaging 44 points a game in CUSA and giving up 18. Diaz will probably forget how to coach/motivate and we will lose to Old Dominio who gave up 66 points to WK-- I need to cancel my flight and hotel for OD game --

Getting players suspended for a bowl game would do no one any good.

Thanks for the RC, RC. At least Marshall would be playing their bowl game half cocked with about 15 guys sidelined by injury. I know it would do us no good, but something has to give because conferences and the NCAA never really punish anyone for breaking a rule.

While I would love to get a shot at LSU or Texas A&M in a bowl, I think a more likely scenario would be for us to get revenge on Utah State in a Bowl game for ruining our Orange Bowl/any bowl in 2012... we just lost heart for the San Jose Game :icon_razz:

1975 was Tech's first Division I/FBS year. And the 1990 Independence Bowl was in Tech's second year after it returned to FBS in 1989 after the 7-year relegation.

Did we all forget what happened in 2012? I hope we never ever play in the garbage independence bowl again.
-
Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
Tis strange to me that a lot of folk are thinking the Independence Bowl would be a good one for Tech after the 2012 fiasco. I went to the I-Bowl in 2008 and enjoyed the Tech sponsored tailgate party in Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, and the outcome of the game was nice. But the area around the stadium was not so nice.I went to see a Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks basketball game at Hirsch earlier this year and the area around the stadium is still pretty depressing.

Don't get me wrong - HOT Bowl is #1 on my list. I would like to have a P5 opponent, though.

Have you been before? For our 25th anniversary, Mrs CK3 and I cruised the southern Caribbean and LOVED it. Take the catamaran to the Pitons. It's about as spectacular as it gets.

They didn't play in the 1st half. Unprepared HC and his OC sidekick were distracted.

When did you start drinking the I-bowl Kool-aide- you have always seen the light on this issue?:) No way we need to go there and bail their behinds out. We need to go to the best bowl available to us, and that is not it. I heard one of the players say on Sunday they believe they are going to the Bahamas. I hope that is true for them- somehow I think that is an easier sell in recruiting than they could go to Shreveport.
-
Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
I agree with most on this board that the Independence bowl is not the ideal location for our bowl game... but i disagree that we should accept ANY other bowl game except them. Heart of Dallas would be great. Any bowl game in the southeast would be great. But I do not think it would help the program much to play in Boise, Idaho or Hawaii. A few rich fans will be able to go and the rest will sit home and miss the experience. I think it is best for Louisiana Tech Football to play in either Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia or Florida. If a bowl game in those states offers, we should always accept it over some long distance bowl. Even if it is the Indy bowl. Just my two cents.

for better or worse CUSA was in town looking at Century tel for possible CUSA basketball tourney and visited with I Bowl folks, did a tour of football stadium. If the hotel tax does not pass the I-bowl and Cusa may work something out. From a recruiting standpoint the I-Bowl is good fit-- bussiness is bussiness -- it also the bowl that would attack the most Tech students and alumn. Before I get slammed, I am pulling a Dr Spock here --just speaking logically. I am flying to OD game, if we play Marshal, I will fly to that game and whatever bowl we play I will fly to it. Reality is I am old fart and can do that but most folks have a life and other obligations - Shreveport and Dallas best for fan base--- take it easy on me when you start slamming this post

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
As a fan, what I see as easiest for most fans
1. I-Bowl - Saturday - 2 days after Christmas. Drive over on Friday or DFW/Houston/LR/Memphis folks. Go home after the game.
2. HoD - Friday - day after christmas. being a noon game - you'll have to travel to Dallas on Christmas. But you can go home after the game.
2a. Armed Forces Bowl - as LaTechReport.com reported - Army may not be eligible - which opens spot in Fort Worth - This is Jan 2, which would be great!
3. New Mexico - LONG DRIVE 13 hours - Flights - cheapest i've found $600/person out of Shreveport (THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE VOTED FOR THE TAX).
4. Boca Raton - see #3
5/6 Hawaii/Bahamas - not cheap
Exposure for Team/Recruiting
1. HoD - ESPN against B1G - only game on - and it's Dallas area.
2. IBowl - ABC against ACC - however overlap of games that may have "better" matchup
2a. Armed Forces - ESPN vs. AAC - only game on
3. NM - ESPN against MWC - overlap with ABC game MWC/Pac-12
4. Hawaii - ESPN vs. MWC - only game on
5/6 Boca Raton/Bahamas - ESPN vs. MAC - only game on

No slamming from me. It was obvious from one of TMac's first pressers that he (and Tech) planned on mending fences with the I Bowl folks. It's also obvious to me that C-USA needs us to have a good working relationship with the I Bowl.
Got to put BVDV and Missy's BS behind us and work for Tech's best interest.

Got to put BVDV and Missy's BS behind us and work for Tech's best interest.
BVDV is gone. Is Missy still there? Then, screw the I-Bowl.

They go on the road to play them and what happens if that happens. Then everyone starts projecting. I told them that we cannot fall into that trap. Sitting down and trying to project the future is a waste of our time right now on the inside. I understand the media and the fans, which is part of the excitement of winning. For us right now, we need to find a way to go 1-0 this week. After that we can go through the open date and take a look at how that is shaking out and we will have a lot clearer picture of what everything will look like in two weeks."
I'm a fan so I can get caught up in the excitement. :) The coaches and players, not so much.

thanks , hopefully leadership of bowl will change one day , its not the bowl that irritated all of us, its the leadership-- I was much more p...ed about our 10-2 season and getting no invite -- 2012 had a coach who cared less, a goofy AD , Liberty Bowl folks and I Bowl committee. Karma got them, Northeast laid a giant bowl movement on their bowl -- I can see Phil Robinson in mix, good for PR Tech and Bowl. Old Tech qb now putting up millions for bowl ( which is not the case but when has the truth stopped marketing?)
-
Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
Reality -- we would have WAY more fans at a game in Shreveport, Dallas or Forth Worth than the other choices being mentioned.

True-- we all know what happens when you do not focus on next game-- when you take anyone for granted-- think for a lot of us talking about bowls is a distraction til next game -- players have plenty of other stuff to focus on

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
At 6-6 we are NOT guaranteed to play in a bowl - at 7-5 we are...
If we get to 7 wins - I plan on going to anywhere except the Bahamas or Hawaii -
1st Choice would be HoD, 2nd would be Indy, New Mexico is a very distant 3rd....
-
Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
Sadly none of our options are incredibly appealing. Location and timing make most of them tough for fans to attend, and the remaining 2 (Indy & HOD) are a case of BTDT.
Independence Bowl
Pro- Best payout(IIRC), likely highest attendance, minimal travel cost, on ABC, good for recruiting, Not the day after Christmas, Chance to remind Indy Bowl Committee how stupid they were
Con- It's the Independence Bowl, constant reminder or 2012, It's the Independence Bowl
Heart of Dallas
Pro- Short travel for most people, low travel cost, good for recruiting, on ESPN, It's not the Independence Bowl
Con-Early afternoon game the day after Christmas leaves little time for tailgating or Pre-game events, played at the Cotton Bowl last year
I'll be happy just to go to a bowl game, and even happier if it's one that I can actually attend, just sucks that our best options are some of the least appealing.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
I saw one prediction of us against Pitt in the I-Bowl. Beating the crap out of an ACC team on ABC the Saturday afternoon after Christmas would be pretty damn good exposure.

And if we EVER want to host the CUSA basketball tourney in Bossier/S'port we need the help of the I-Bowl folks and the Cities of Shreveport/Bossier and their tourism departments -
There is a much bigger issue here at play than most folks realize

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
I heard that all CUSA bowl games must be filled before we can accept the I Bowl. I think we have 6 bowls, so 7 teams would have to become bowl-eligible. Is this true?

Sort of true. C-USA only has 5 bowls this year. New Mexico, Boca, Bahamas, Hawai'i, and Heart of Dallas. Several media outlets also reported we have a backup relationship with the Armed Forces Bowl.

Exactly my breakdown. I would rather go to hawaii or the Bahamas if they weren't on Christmas eve/day. Wish they would move those guys up to the weekend before Christmas or even a couple weekends before.

I'm sure the conference can negotiate with Bowls/Conferences if Tech/C-USA/I-Bowl want to be together

What's the deal with the rumored AAC connection to the Indy bowl? Is it true that they can select EITHER a CUSA team or AAC team?

Secondary tie-ins
Bowl has the option the first year - after that it goes to the other conference on a rotating basis
I think that is how it works

But the area around the stadium was not so nice.I went to see a Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks basketball game at Hirsch earlier this year and the area around the stadium is still pretty depressing.
The area around the Cotton Bowl stadium is a dump too. Are you going to boycott the HOD bowl? I would argue that the area where Martin Luther King Rd crosses Malcom X street --about 500 yards directly in front of Cotton Bowl Stadium-- will make Shreveport's "Fair Park" area look like a 5-star Carribean resort.
Many "Bowl game" stadiums --save for those on college campuses (e.g., the Military Bowl in Ft Worth)-- are in dumpy areas. Ever been to the Orange bowl? The Rose Bowl? Heck, New Orleans? Even the University of Southern California is located in a very rough part of town called "south LA". But that's no reason to boycott these bowl games, or USC. Just toughen up a bit and support 'em anyway.

I just posted something very similar to your post on another thread. Suffice it to say, LA Tech fans need to be smarter. The I-Bowl offers LA Tech a P5 opponent in a nationally televised game that can literally be attended by 50K LA Tech fans. What other bowl --or sporting venue, or city-- offers that kind of exposure within 70 miles of our home campus? Since some folks can't see the big picture, I'll go ahead and answer that question for you: NONE!!!!
The I-Bowl game is smack in the heart of LA Tech's recruiting country. Like it or not, LA Tech needs the I-Bowl to be successful. It behooves us to strengthen our relationship with the I-Bowl committee. As Dogsince65 says, "business is business". And this is good business.

Think Big Picture. Both LA Tech and the I-Bowl have already tried that "cut off your nose to spite your face" thing. It didn't work so well for either party in 2012.

Unless the city of Memphis cleaned things up, you can add the Liberty Bowl to that list as well!

....and that's my point. Very few (if any) of these bowl game sites are in luxurious, high rent areas. (I'm guessing the "Boca Raton Bowl" is though, HAHA!)

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena dumpy? You're thinking of the coliseum across from USC

Agree 100%, Plus it is going to be the Saturday after Christmas at 3:30 on ABC, what better time slot could we ask for.

Quit making sense, dang it.
So I should hold my nose and vote for Missy? There are some EXCELLENT people on the I Bowl staff I'd LOVE TO SEE US WORK WITH FOR SURE. However. still just seems to me it's like trusting Jerry Sandusky with your kids since he's the most available babysitter. I got about an hour to decide.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
We need to play in the Ibowl for one reason only. I will be in St. Lucia on the beach and I am not sure they get ESPN on the island. Needs to be on ABC just to be sure. All kidding aside.
If Tech finishes with 8, 9 or god forbid 10 wins, the Ibowl will be begging to have Tech attend. The crowd would be huge. If we win 10, Tech gets to chose its bowl. Does Tech chose HOD or Ibowl?

I'd like to think we'd pick the I-Bowl. I get the impression our administration really is trying to mend the relationship.

Re: 2014-15 Bowl Chatter and Predictions
While it seems that most of us are holding some much warranted grudges against the I-Bowl and others are giving logical reasons why the I-Bowl should be embraced we may be overlooking what the bowls are suppose to be. They should be an award and something to look forward to and get excited about for the players. How exciting would it be for the players to know this is what you're playing for, a trip to Shreveport? How much of a recruiting tool would it be selling the I-Bowl to Tx.-La.-Miss kids?

Playing at 2 PM on ABC against a P-5 team in a packed stadium might be exciting for the players... just a thought

I-Bowl vs. Pitt in front of a large crowd (YOUR Crowd) or Bahamas in front of nobody v. C Michigan

I have not been to the other stadiums of which you speak. I guess the state of the parking lots and lighting that are part of the fair grounds in Shreveport is what I found to be the most depressing.

I love using the shuttle form Mall St. Vincent when going the game. It was very convenient for aTm game.
