Things are slowly but surely spiraling out of Tech’s favor. This is what happens when Holtz doesn’t play to win.

Another gift. One first down wins this one.
That pass wasn't even close.

Offsetting penalties certainly fair. The 'targeting' not so much.
This defense has been incredible..

Miami is horrible. All we had to do to win today was step onto the field. Defense has played well but to the competition. Offense is a lame horse.
Except for Henderson.

I bet holtz has some plays drawn up where we can get at least 2 more punts for our punter before time expires.

Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
My takeaways:
BoP better than theirs.
Against a good team, Amik would have been missed.
Tech fans showed up, as expected. Miami not so much, as expected.
It was ugly, but we had a great time in spite of the poor performance.

I will add to my takeaway:
Someone invited 2017 J’Mar, and it was the bad version of that year.
The concessions were running out at the beginning of the 3rd.
Beginning of the game, bathrooms were pretty clean. At the end, a half inch of water in the floor.
Best part of the night was after the game. We went to Academy to get my daughter a Saints T-shirt since she is the only one who didn’t get one from Santa. 7 years old and already a die hard Saints fan.

Apologies to those who like to see field goal attempts. None today. But we had plenty o’ punts.
Nice crowd and a nice win against a “big time” program. The weather was great to boot.
The end was puzzling to me. JMar slid short of the goal line, presumably to be able to run out the clock. I think a couple of kneel downs would have run out the clock. BUT, we then run the ball. It was great we scored a TD, but what if Tech had fumbled and Miami ran it back for a TD? They would have tied or, with a 2 point conversion, beaten us when we could have been up 14-0 of JMar had just completed the run the first time.
What did I miss? Is there some sound strategy to what Tech did there?
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
Just imagine how this game might’ve turned out if JMar had played closer to his potential. If half of his poorly thrown unforced error type throws had been better, Tech might’ve, should’ve, could’ve won 28-0. I guess you can say the score doesn’t matter much after the fact. The thing is though that once again part of the Tech team didn’t play to its potential and as is the case more often than not its the part that Holtz oversees.
-

Has to be. Indy Bowl in 2008 had same issue.

what it looked like to me at first is that jmar (smartly) took a dive to run out the clock, but holtz wanted him to go ahead and get another score, so cut him loose to run it again. could be they knew the personnel maimi had in the game had no chance of stopping the qb run? maybe they wanted to give the fans a little more excitement to end the game?
either way, 14-0 looks better than 7-0. maybe holtz wants it to look as bad as possible for manny so that he gets fired and we can hire him back to run our d?
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
I Just want to verify something i thought i saw at the game, Am I crazy or did Miami get 6 plays on a set of downs at one point? I mean we got the ball back regardless cause Miami's Offense was the biggest turd out there tonight but still.

Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
Of course I prefer our offense to play well, to be a well-oiled machine. But! I LOVE watching a dominating defense!!! I get all giddy when my team(s) are awesome on defense!
Smith is mediocre, at best. All the blogs I follow have been absolutely brutal on Miami, but some posters have also said "What's up with Tech's QB, he sucks." Smith is the QB of record in our last three bowl wins, but in each case it was the defense that won the games.
And this...James Jackson played a big game last night, and I said when the suspensions occurred his absence was the biggest loss. Last night Smith-Hardy contributed nothing to the cause, and the other guy acting out of pure selfishness, Amik, played no role in a HUGE shutout win!!! That's right, Amik, the loyal Dawgs delivered a big defensive effort, on national TV versus a P5 team. And did it without you! Suck on that, bud!
Yeah, I know, many of you defend Amik's decision. But, obviously, I don't. Oh, and guess what, none of our DBs who played last night got hurt. Imagine that...

Oh, but you forget....he was nursing that fantom injury he suffered in the UTSA game! You are spot on....I hope he enjoys looking at the rings of his abandoned team mates!
And another thing...I am SO glad to see the last of the rockstar. That was the worst of the worst performance of a Tech QB since....well, since the majority of his games he played in. Even the Miami fans were making fun of him.

The defense was special last night, can't argue that.

Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
I was surprised that we won the line of scrimmage against a team with 4 and 5 star players. They got some good pressure on J'Mar, but we ran the ball well. They protected their QB's better, but couldn't run on us. I think being able to force them to throw was the difference in the game.
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
Man some of ya'll are like little depressed rain clouds, having to get upset and down about something even when we just had a perceptively HUGE win. Don't worry and be happy, at least for a little while.
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
I think the TD at the end came from the tackler trying to strip the ball more than make a tackle. The result was him kind of spinning Smith into the end zone.
The defense did play very well, no question!
The offense ran the ball effectively enough especially when you consider we didn’t do hardly anything different than what we normally do.
The passing game was mostly ineffective except for about 6 catches. Otherwise JMar missed his mark as bad as he ever has. He just isn’t a skilled touch pass QB. All in all I’d say he was worse without Rattay trying to fine point him.

My take was that J'Mar did the right thing by sliding and Skip told him to go ahead and take it in to give us 14. I was just guessing at the time, but Skip knew that we were going to win at that time and just put a little icing on it for J'Mar. Our defense showed that we could hold - especially with less than a minute left.
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
Saw a meme with a great stat. Number of four and five star players on the roster: Miami 33 Tech 1.
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
The both experience of playing Miami, their fanbase were assholes. We had a Miami fan sit in the Tech section throwing up the "U" and talking a lot of smack next to us. He left at halftime. I guess he went back to his hotel to cry and snort his coke.
-
Re: Independence Bowl vs Miami
J’Mar never looked settled in pocket all game. It’s like he was anticipating lots of pressure & just never settled in
I think we were easily 21 pts better than Miami & I certainly expected 25 + pts from our offense
We won - yes against a VERY avg team. Heck our conference champ had a lame opponent as well SO not much a G5 school can do post season. We need a G5 playoff system to spice up the post season
Something to play for cuz we will never have the resources to compete as a P5

It was a frustrating, but good gameplan. UM’s speed made it more likely that we’d put the ball in danger if we threw much. J’Mar played like his only objective was to protect the ball. He’s terrible when he plays tight like that, but save the terrible pick, he did what I believe HOLTZ wanted him to do.

Did you see Holtz jump his butt after the first series when he got sacked twice? I think Holtz was telling him he was going to have to get rid of it quick against their pass rush. (maybe?).

He had plenty of time to get rid of the ball. He was focusing on his favorite receiver at that point.

I was beginning to wonder what J'Mar was smoking. There's throwing the ball where only your player can catch it, then there's throwing it where no one can catch it. I realize sometimes you need to just throw it away, but I don't think that was what he was trying to do on some of his misses by a mile. There were times when our guys were wide open and J'Mar sailed it over their heads. Reminded me a lot of how he was playing early in the season. But, I am very happy for the win.

I was wondering about the 2nd QB that played - the commentators said he was a 5-star rated QB coming out of HS??! How could that be, the guy was terrible. No wonder he left his old school. He couldn't have even pushed J'Mar.

Tate Martell. He was the heir apparent @ Ohio State until Justin Fields transferred in. So Vanilla Ice transferred to Miami. He's quit the team, re-joined the team. Seems like his head is messed up. Here is more info:
