Also, the administration wouldn't let ub have a concert with any non Christian bands at the time. Churches out numbered the students. Plus ULM was getting big names like third eye blind, Iggy azalea and a few more big names that I can't think of. So yea the ub members and school administration made it easy to take shots at ub

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
The concert thing was definitely something those who organized events were made fun of for.
Thats why when they got Bowling for Soup before homecoming a few years ago, it was kind of surprising.

What the administration did to the SGA over several decades is a good example of why we're where we are today with student attendance and interest in Tech athletics.
Tech saw the downside of the SGA president having some power and a voice but never considered the upside of what the SGA once was and could be on campus.
Tech took their office space in Howard Auditorium away while also diminishing the organization in general.
If some of you are wondering how much interest there once was in the SGA consider the fact we had an election in the late 80s for SGA president where nearly half the student body turned out to vote in the primary. We had over 4,000 students physically go to the student center to cast a ballot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over 2 days in April.
Tech basically killed off the one organization that organized student interest in Tech athletics and never replaced that with a person or department within athletics to achieve the same goal.

People were saying the same thing 50 years ago. Not sure most people even know what they do, but the SGA is not a joke. The SGA is elected. The SGA serves a purpose by giving Tech students a voice in how the school is managed campus wide. For example, the SGA has a representative sitting on many campus boards, e.g., the Tech Athletic Council, who hires Head Football coaches, etc.... I'm disappointed to see The Historian's post immediately above this one, because it sounds like the SGA's power has been diminished over the years. The SGA used to be involved in many decisions involving the students.
I'm not as familiar with the Union Board. They always seemed a little artsy fartsy for my taste, but that's okay.

During my time I only met one quality ub member. The rest were out of touch with the rest of the students as a whole. They have their own space in toliver.
Yik Yak is a cesspool and all the worst parts of social media rolled into one. I wouldn't say that app is a true representation of the student body. If you said most students were apathetic to what SGA and UB does, than yeah I would agree. I wouldn't put all the fault into SGA and UB though as explained below.

The administration, at least during the times of Jindal's education cuts, really tied UB's hands and prevented UB from using more money for concerts. Student fees for UB and SGA are considered public money and are scrutinized by state audits (so they say). So if UB or SGA is deemed to be wasting money (like spending 80,000 for only 1000 people to show up, a ratio of 80 dollars spent for each person), the administration says that the state could cut the funding. In order to protect UB and SGA, they would put limitations on the amount spent for a concert, which severely hurts the chance of bringing in a better artist. I wouldn't doubt that they'd try and influence UB's selection in order to get better attendance and prove the money is well spent without giving UB a choice.
Furthermore, the administration would not allow a fee increase for these organizations. So UB and SGA are inhibited by the administration by how much they can spend and then not allowed whatsoever to increase fees and have more money to bring in better artists or whatever SGA does. The budgets have stayed the same for 20+ years now (probably much longer). So while prices go up for everything, the choice of artists for concerts will only get worse as the budgets continue to stay the same.

SGA has representation on the following councils:
Student Advisory Council
Food Service Committee
Administrative Council
Student Organizations Committee
Athletic Council
Technology Fee Committee
Parking and Traffic Committee
Student Activities Committee
Instructional Policies Committee
Honor CouncilGraduate Council
University Fee Committee
Library Advisory Committee
Student Organizations Grant Committee
Behavioral Standards Committee
So the SGA president or whoever represents SGA can influence these councils if they have the willpower. The only committee the SGA president is explicitly mentioned to be a part of is the Student Organizations Committee which handles disciplinary decisions for students and organizations. That includes the UB president and presidents of the inter-greek organizations as well for student representation.

I never once knew anyone who was in SGA. I didn’t know much about anything on campus. I went to class, went to lunch, went to work, and attended ballgames. I lived in town so didn’t spend any time on campus really.

Both of these are good examples of how most of the student body is apathetic towards SGA. How to fix it? Not too certain but I would bet that most students feel the SGA does nothing of importance for them that warrants the time and effort to vote for representatives and know who they are. So SGA would need to be able to make decisions that seriously affect students in order for students to care.

They do. But apparently all these "students" who never bothered getting involved in campus clubs and events, and especially those who "lived in town so didn’t spend any time on campus really", missed out. Imagine that.

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
Believe me, my school involvement had little to do with want as much as time. I worked 35-40 hours Monday-Saturday and went to church on Sunday. If the rest of my time wasn’t in class or studying for class, I would have bombed out. I wasn’t built for college and had to fight for every C I got with no extra curricular to speak of.

As for the question if they do or not, I think we'll disagree. I think we could agree though then that there is an extremely poor job of promoting SGA to students. SGA's fault? Administration's?

Not discounting your schedule or lack of available time for participating in clubs and campus activities, but voting in an SGA election and knowing your representatives would require just a quick visit to the SGA website or quick visit to the back of Tolliver while getting lunch. That's not difficult for students to do even with a busy schedule. But if you look at voter turnout, I would bet it's extremely low. I would bet the number of students who know their representative is even worse. The question is, why?

I won’t disagree with that. I could have made time if I it was made clear that it was important. I am very active now in paying attention to my representation in government. I probably would have been back then, but wasn’t paying attention or it wasn’t publicized well. I don’t know which.

That’s on those who choose not to participate. It’s normal at commuter schools and even though we have lots of housing, our students go home on the weekends instead of supporting athletics. Been that way since the 70s

When did the TAC open? I remember the first game I attended there was after I had left and against USC. I think we won and Cheryl Miller fouled out. I don' think I ever attended a concert there as they were all in Mem Gym in my day. Memories are fuzzy

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
Those of us that have been around a minimum of 30 years deserve a huge refund from these clowns that are so called leaders! Guice doesn’t have a passion to see Tech be great in athletics! He doesn’t understand the frustration from the longtime loyal fans that have been very loyal supporters that traveled to great distances to watch our football and basketball teams play! We have felt the last straw and the back is breaking! He better pull a rabbit out of his ass soon and correct this disastrous conference realignment! He needs to form some kind of committee that is ALWAYS looking for excellence for our future! We have been mediocre for wayyyyy too long! Its time to make some serious progress soon or find another job! We have lost confidence in his leadership along with Wood and Holtz! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Opening night in the TAC on December 4, 1982, was a doubleheader loss. Women to USC and men to USL. And that was after the I-AA semifinal loss to Delaware that started the day.

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
Best concert I ever saw in Memorial Gym was Harry Chapin. He performed there twice between 77-81. I remember the "floor" rushing toward the stage when he started and he just looked out, laughed, and said "Guys, we are gonna be here a while. Everyone sit and have a good time". Guy played for a very long time each time he performed. Because he was also raising money for his charity, he would sign a book of his lyrics after each concert. Stayed hours after his concert finished. One of my best stories came from a UB member that was assigned to pick him up at the airport. He was used to bands that wanted all of the lockers covered in the dressing rooms, had to ensure the finished product didn't look like a locker room, etc (certain types of M&Ms in certain bowls, etc. etc.). When they picked Harry up in the Shreveport airport, all he requested was a hot meal, location to be picked by the driver. From those 2 concerts, followed him until his untimely death.

When they picked Harry up in the Shreveport airport, all he requested was a hot meal, location to be picked by the driver. From those 2 concerts, followed him until his untimely death.
Did you know he attended the US Air Force Academy?

Yes I did. I believe he alludes to that in the Taxi line "I was gonna learn to fly". (think I read that somewhere).

I was there from 77-81 and I don't remember that one. I only saw him in Memorial Gym. I would think it would be too many people for The Coffeehouse, but it could have happened before my time.
While sad, when I saw how Chapin died (car crash in his VW bug), I thought he was pretty much true to the end. Freely admit his music wasn't for everyone (my wife hates it when I play his music), but he was a classic.

One of the great story tellers IMO. My dad talked about him playing at Memorial Gym when he was at Tech.

We may have a non-existent sports program budget drain and tanking academics, but by golly Guice has his finger on the real priorities: a giant modernist hellsculpture.

I had missed the announcement but it arrived on campus today if you'd like to avoid it.

That would hardly make it better. In fact, I'm glad a Tech grad didn't produce this monstrosity.
Not to be confused, apparently, with Curtis Pittman, Grambling Women's T&F Assistant Coach

Nah, anyone can create crap. It takes real talent to create ugliness.

That was the coffee house under Tollivar cafeteria, home of the 1lb. donuts and a great juke box. I remember Martin Mull performing his stand-up there.

Tolliver was "the" cafeteria when I was at Tech. Upper Tolliver and Lower Tolliver it was called.

It's a metaphor for Tech Athletics.
Sure, it's an affront to good sensibilities and a waste of money, but the elites think its great!

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
The only good use I see for it is to stick the effigies for the victims of our victories when next we have one... IF next we ever have one. So yeah, it’s a waste of money and space. A Bulldog hotdog stand would’ve served the passers by better.

Well, it doesn't look that bad to me. Better than that urinal thing they put where the Lady of the Mist was when she was decapitated.
I will say it looks like a bad landing zone for the skydiving team!

Ahhh....... Lady of the Mist. Haven't thought about her is quite some time. Still remember the time I got in big trouble with the wife when we took our young girls back to Tech to see where Mommy and Daddy went to school. We walked in the Quad and the girls asked what that statue was. I said that was the Lady of the Mist. One of the kids, without missing a beat, said "yea, don't you remember, she stands up when a virgin walks by". Never seen my wife's face as red as it was that day!

I don't get "modern" art. The company I worked for with the corporate office in St. Paul, MN. paid an egg-head sculptor 6 figures to produce a sculpture to put by the building.....it literally looks like about 6 steel 18" diameter drain pipes welded together and painted red! They even named it...."Above, Above"!! What?

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
I guess none of us are deep enough to get it. Oh well, I’m not too bummed about it. What ever happened to paintings or sketches of bowls of fruit? Landscapes? Or large scale art that actually looks like something.

I'm sure it's fine in person. The cost of these things is part of what always shocks me. That and this one just reminds me of pick-up sticks or uncooked spaghetti. But it's probably just fine. Something interesting to look at as you walk by. Looks like they had to put some kind of art there. Could be worse.

Yes, Tollivar. I had a senior moment and couldn't remember it. Some called it Tomain Cafeteria, referencing ptomaine poisoning.

Re: Guice fiddles as Tech football burns
The states more to blame for the statue than Tech. They have to spend 1% of construction cost on art. This was apparently made because of the new dorms and apartments. Not the biggest fan of the statue itself, but it could’ve always been worse

I can't find info on 1977 & 1978 even though I was there. LOL!
No one mentioned them, and I know I am old, but the one I remember in Memorial Gym was The Lettermen, but there were a lot of good ones and packed crowds the whole time I was there—late 60s. Fun times.

That was 1982 on the same day the TAC opened. Tech lost 17-0. Sad last game at Tech for Matt Dunigan.
Tech won the 1984 I-AA semifinals at Middle Tennessee and lost to Montana State in the I-AA championship game.

OK. I remember taking a charter to the NC game at the Citadel in '84

I knew about lights and speakers, but that would be great if it had wifi as well for anyone wishing to study, hang out out there.
