Freeze just signed an 8-year $40 million extension at Liberty, but reportedly the buyout isn't too excessive to prevent a move.

Players lacking Size, Speed, and Talent coupled with an apparent lack of basic/natural football smarts puts any coach in a precarious position. I had hopes for the new DC based on his history. I'm wondering can he sustain any respectability while he builds the bench back (recruiting). By now you'd think some basic blocking and tackling coaching would have sunk in for some of these players.

Liberty has the money and will have more money if Auburn buys out Freeze's contract.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Well the shoe has dropped at Auburn. The question now is who picks it up?
Is Freeze really that happy at Liberty? I would hate that if there is finally a coach at a G5 school who would forgo the money, fame and everything else a P5 school offers and it's Freeze.
Is it Kiffin? He would like the increase in NIL money.
Or is it someone else?
Funny thing is the President fired him, after all the talk of the new ad being the one who was going to have to dirty his hands.
As a Tech fan, I hope it is Freeze.
Here are SI's guesses.

I think the seeming market for Freeze is mostly generated by Freeze's agent. If it's real, Liberty comes out looking really smart for getting that bigger buyout (without ever actually having to pay that salary). If it's not real, they may or may be happy with the new contract (hopefully not, at least when it comes to conference titles).
And I also think Freeze takes just about any offer he gets to go to a P5. I'm just less convinced than Liberty's administration about how likely that is to happen I think.

Too be totally honest I have no idea. I promise you I was not making a political statement. I know lots of people here try to take a political stance on every topic, like many others have pointed out. I enjoy and understand sports enough to just talk about sports on this part of the platform. I feel that you probably do too. The guy who wrote this article wasn't relaying any sporting news, just making his guesses like most everyone else. He just had ten, guess he was hedging his bet. ;) That's why I posted that article, very extensive list.
Do you have any guess that he left off his list? Or do you know that Auburn has already make their pick?

Honestly - outside of Freeze and Rhule (who I would go get) - it looks like he pulled names off of an Auburn fan board...
Kiffin? Kelley? Fickle? Fleck?

As for the agent stuff why do you feel that way? Still carrying too much stink from his Ole Miss days?
Also no way he takes just any P5 job. He has it too good at Liberty, he will be pretty picky, as he should. You realize he already has a higher paying contract than every acc coach not named Sweeney. Of course, any school can up the money, but so can Liberty. Whatever happens, it's going to be interesting. I hope he leaves for somewhere before next year.

Some of those names are on lost of other lists. Except maybe Fleck. Kiffin will always make a sec list if they job is thought to be better than Ole Miss.

He's been rumored (in similar lists to the one above) for every job that has opened for as long as he's been at Liberty, and my understanding is that he wasn't really being considered for most of them. That's every agent's job, make their current employer think they're a hot commodity (and you either get more money where you are, or a higher price at your new job).
I just don't know that he brings enough to the table to offset what you're getting back (and not just the phone calls on the school-issued phone, recruiting stuff was going to come due either way).

Yeah that story broke about the same time as the firing happened. Gruden was quick to jump on the opportunity. The ad says he wants someone with a lot of college experience. That's not Gruden. So this might get interesting as everyone in Tampa loves Gruden of course.

In addition to Poggi’s $1 million annual salary, which is comprised of a $500,000 base salary and an equal matching portion from supplemental channels, Charlotte athletics director Mike Hill is investing approximately an additional $2.25 million into the program for the assistant coaches’ salary pool
How much is our assistants pool?

Lane Kiffin is staying at Ole Miss.
Quote:
Sources told ESPN that Lane Kiffin's new deal will take his average annual salary to the $9 million range. He made $7.25 million this season. In three seasons at Ole Miss, Kiffin is 23-12. The Rebels won their first seven games this season but lost four of their last five. A year ago, Kiffin led Ole Miss to its first 10-win regular season in school history.

Wonder if Liberty's performance today is a signal of this? New Mexico State leads 28-7 at halftime in Lynchburg.

Auburn, Hugh Freeze have discussed coaching job, sources say (espn.com)

We’re a baseball school today but just give the Tech administrators some time and there’s a really good chance they’ll ruin that for another decade or longer. You know Tech we’re only allowed to be good at one or maybe two things at a time.

5 year contract will probably outlast the lifespan of the USFL.

The proper way to analyze news is to determine how it could embarrass Tech the most
In this case, Holtz makes a NY bowl with UAB and we look like fools for "letting him go"

He will make at 10 times more per year at UAB. USFL only pays its players $45-55k per year, how much can their coaches make? Estimates are $100k per season.

Or he totally destroys UAB. They never make it into a Power 5 conference. USF would probably be heading to the Big 12 if not for their hiring of Holtz.

This is what's interested me about UAB since the day the football program came back. To bring the program back UAB's leadership had to given assurances to the University of Alabama board that they had no intentions of seeking membership in a Power 5 league in the future. And that they had no intentions of competing with the U of A.
What if the opportunity presents itself at some point in the next 10 years? The Big 12 or the ACC? Their board has already been told they'll say no.

Freeze is a good coach, not someone who you would want your sister to bring home to meet your parents. He just had to find the right spot. He had a great set up at Liberty with Ian McCaw and Falwell Jr (before he literally got caught with his pants down).
Auburn is a perfect fit as well. A field name after Pat Dye and Bruce Pearl is the basketball coach. A trifecta of corruption.
Liberty probably not getting as much of a buy-out as we might expect. Not to matter they have tons of money. Freeze was making more than about half of the Power 5 coaches, $5 million a year on the new contract.

Not sure I think Chadwell is a better coach than Freeze, probably a much better person though. He is a very good and will be the best coach in the conference. Especially if he brings a healthy Grayson McCall with him. Speculation is with being injured this season he might come back for one more year. If that's the case they do not lose a conference game. Liberty has too much of a financial advantage over us. No way we could pry Chadwell away like Liberty is trying to do.

Sanders, and all those singing his praises, will soon learn that trying to win at Colorado is a totally different beast than anything he encountered at Jackson State. His persona won't carry enough, really ANY, weight in the bigger picture. Oh, he might land some recruits that CU wouldn't have gotten but competing at that level requires a whole lot more than winning a few recruiting battles.

I think he will be good there. It is kind of a weird fit. Obviously he will not repeat his win/loss record at any Power 5 school. Very few go 23-2 in years 2 and 3 anywhere.

You know I was thinking Littrell must have about fell over once he was told he was fired. Remember Skip was shocked he was fired after going 3-9. Littrell just coached in the conference championship game. Not sure Skip remembered there was a conference championship game. Both probably where they need to be, not being a headcollege coach.

Interesting? What do you think he was doing?

A lot of it will be academic eligibility and stuff. I know standards tend to be lower for athletes anyway but the pac 12 has much higher standards than the swac.

Turns out when you can't schedule a dozen NAIA teams your record isn't quite as spotless.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Colorado hasn’t been relevant since they hired Hawkins from Boise. They are paying Sanders $5mil/year (isn’t that what Liberty was paying Coach Escort).
They are all over the news and are about to be a prime destination for portal guys and Cali high schoolers who don’t get top tier offers.
Sanders was built for this time in CFB. NIL and the portal could get UC back to relevance pretty quick.
And if not, what have they lost? They’re still irrelevant and out an amount they can easily raise?

I think it can probably work in the sense of not just being an automatic train wreck (although that's also certainly on the table). 8-5 with some smart scheduling (smarter than next year when I think they come to TCU and maybe play Nebraska). Knock off one of the Utah/Washington/Oregon powers here and there. Go to some bowl games. All of that is possible, and it's all better than where they're at.
It does look like the coordinator hires will be good ones, and if he leaves things to them and just focuses on being the big name it could be fine. How much wiggle room (and interest) he'll have until it gets there will be interesting (because it won't be soon, even with the portal). And the Pac-?? isn't the SWAC. And a 5 star here and there isn't going to give you the same kind of talent advantage in the Pac-?? that it gave you in the SWAC.

Sure. He had a lot of success recruiting to Jackson State. Gotta be easier to recruit to Colorado right?
Everybody seems to assume Sanders can't coach. I don't know if he can or not, but he's clearly very bright and he knows what it looks like to be successful. I wouldn't be surprised if his coaching chops are better than he gets credit for...this is his wheelhouse and he's got experience. It's not like he's running for senate.

Since you brought up politics, you have to be proud of your president, right?

Are we shooting better so far this season? The few games I have seen, it would seem so.

Ah, thats good its a little better than last year’s at 72.5%
Tulsa’s was low 70s last year, and high 60s the year before, so I don’t think he necessarily inherited a good FT shooting team to begin with.
To me, FT is on the players more than anyone else. Thats basic stuff.
