Nope - petition won't do it. This is governed by a statute that is entirely different than the one that changed what kind of alcohol could be sertved and what kind of business can serve it. The only way to chage the operating hours of local establishments within the city limits of Ruston is by vote of the City Council.

Don't be so negative. There is actually a group of citizens working on this very diligently as we type.

My understanding is they just cleared a few sections to make it more presentable to sell. Unless something new has popped up in the last few days.

There seems to be a gap in the ownership of the Whataburger franchises...to the west you have the Shreveport/Bossier franchise, and then east, you have the Vicksburg/Jackson franchise. NCLA and NELA seem to be wide open, AND PRIMED for an invasion of Whataburger.
I say, BRING IT ON!

Which is why I said the franchise "appears" to be wide open...I hope that if someone does own the rights to the franchise in our area, they decide Ruston looks like a great Whataburger town and opens one up. :D

Call 'em up...
Whataburger
1 Whataburger Way
Corpus Christi, TX 78411
ph: 361-878-0650 f: 361-878-0473 http://www.whataburger.com
Whataburger has more than 600 franchised outlets of their popular fast food restaurant concept. The units are typically open 24 hours a day and serve more than just hamburgers. Breakfast items, fajitas and chicken are also on the menu. Whataburger was founded in 1950. It is a privately-held company.
Forgot about the 24 hour thing. That would make a difference.

Probably Dallas. Theres none in Louisiana, Miss. or Arkansas.

Not a fan of Qdoba or Chipotle. If you are going to do a burrito joint, do it right. Cafe Rio. http://www.caferio.com/ Best burrito franchise, bar none.

The best burritos are in the Mission District. Cafe Rio serves Mission-style burritos. May not be as good as those that you can get in the MD, but they are fantastic and nothing closely resembling garbage. Have you had it? I agree that Qdoba/Moe/Chipotle is no good. I am not really a fan of Freebirds, but it might be a touch better than the other mentioned chains on a good day. Kokopelli's in New Orleans was pretty good, but they had really interesting non-traditional burritos - like thai burritos and surf-n-turf burritos.

Moe's is horrible. I hated that place when I lived in BR. Thank goodness I moved to Houston, Mission Burrito is the bomb and is far better than Freebirds. It is just a local chain in Houston, though.
Chipotle's is just bad, it was started by a dude in Colorado for crying out loud and blew up with a McDonald's investment, it doesnt get any worse than that. Qdoba is better, but I dont know if it is anywhere close to Ruston. I liked Cool beans that was in Shreveport, but it didnt make it. People like chains for some reason, especially for fast foodish type places.
-
Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
Assembly line burrito joints are all the same. Only thing that is different is the meat and probably the rice.
I generally stay away from chain restaurants. Whataburger is the only interstate fast food joint I could see doing really well in Ruston.

How about we all pool our money together, we come up with a Board of Directors, and we franchise Dowling's Smokehouse BBQ around America. All of us share in the profits and we retire in 10 years after selling all our locations to The Brinker Group.

The guy who created Izzo's has some serious copyright infringement unless he paid the guy who created Freebird's. From the accent brick walls, to the newspapers hanging on the wall, the place is exactly the same. It is insane. I liked Izzo's more, though.

Not true. Cafe Rio loads the burrito into a tin saucer, covers it with red sauce and cheese, and then runs it through an oven (like Quiznos). When it comes out the other side it is bubbly goodness.

Which is funny because burritos are not even very common in Mexico.
Speaking of which you really can't beat El Jarrito in best quality Mexican food in town even though there are El Jarritos all over the place.

I go to the one behind Canes all the time. I can't comment on much else but their fajitas are some of the best I've ever had. And their salsa is much much better than Old Mexico.

Let me know if you decide to explore franchising. It's an interesting idea.
A word of caution - My wife and have I traveled a lot. Many days we ask the locals for directions to the best BBQ in town. It's NEVER a franchise or chain they refer us to. It's generally a "hole in the wall" place owned by local people. I've had some good BBQ all over the country, but very few are as good as Dowling's. I'm not sure Dowling's great taste could be replicated by a franchisee. There are very few well known BBQ franchises and the few there are seem to be mostly regional.

I haven't been to Fuddruckers in about 15 years so I can't do the head-to-head. Red Robin has really good burgers, milkshakes, alcohol, and free refills on french fries, which are thick-cut "steak fries" seasoned with something akin to Lowry's.
Oh, and my kids really like the souvenir kids' meal cups. The cups have the measurement in ounces and accolades on the side. My 4-year-old significantly increased his milk intake when we started using those cups at home.
Red Robin (and our church) were the things I was saddest to leave behind when we moved from San Antonio last year.

The free refill on french fries is all I remember (and the seasoning). Haven't been to Red Robin in over 10 years, but I am glad they have kept that tradition.

Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
I've only been to Red Robin once, and that was in Montgomery, AL on the way back from our previous game at Auburn. It was pretty dern tasty, and I wish we had one in Baton Rouge. We did just get a 5 Guys a while back that I haven't tried, but I've heard that's a decent place. I dunno how well it will do though, because the one and only Mugshots from Hattiesburg opened across the street from it, mwahahaha!

We are getting a 5 guys over here in Convington. I am pretty excited. The few times I have eaten there in DC or Baltimore it has been pretty good.

Yeah their fries are good. Everybody here is ready for the in and out burger to open. I am not even going to try and get close to that place the first week or so. It is going to pay for itself in about 9 months.

Cheddar's has been open in WM for several weeks now...maybe two months. I still refuse to go because the wait is over 30 minutes at a decent time of day.

Your loss. The Monroe store is so much better.
-
Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
Yeah a 30 minute wait would bother me most days, especially for a chain. On Thurs-Sat nights around here 30 minutes is average though, again wouldn't wait 30 minutes for applebee's etc, but on the weekends there are just too many people over here not to have a wait most places.
It's sad that some of the better mom and pop places over here have been put under by the chains.

I have eaten there quite a few times. Probably approaching how many times I have eaten at the Monroe one. I thought both were pretty decent but neither blew my mind. The one in downtown is somehow a classic part of monroe though.

Ambiance makes all the difference. The food at both locations was EXACTLY the same, but the WM location just never quite had what it took. I went to WM as often as possible and hate that it did not make it. They hung on the longest among local eateries there. Locals just can't make it on the interstate strip.

Exact same menu.
Chou, I heard one time from an inspector that the Monroe Mowhawk was the cleanest restaurant in town. The nastiest restaurant was a place we used to have lunch at every Friday.:icon_wink:
Rule of thumb...if the bathroom is nasty, the kitchen is nasty.

I really liked 5 Guys' fries, but thought the burger was pretty mediocre for what you pay. I've only eaten at In 'n Out once, but was very unimpressed.

I have never eaten at either Mohawk, but I do know that being a "classic" can carry a mediocre restaurant. In Savannah there is a chain of locally owned restaurants that is, on its best day, mediocre, yet it continues to thrive and even open new locations.

Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
I think what killed the West Monroe one is that fact if you didn't know it was back there you would simply forget about it. Plus you can't replicate that old feel of the one in Monroe.

LOL  I can assure you that it will not be a trailer park. Drugstore -- maybe. I could see that happening.
Do you really think Karl and the rest of the developers who are so heavily invested in that stretch would go for a trailer park? I sure wouldn't.
-
Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
No, I would hope they wouldn't let a trailer park go there, but crazy things happen sometimes. I did look to see where the city limits are, and that is inside, so surely they won't let them put a trailer park there. If it is one, surely it'll be very upscale, if there is such a thing (sorry to any of you who may live in one). All we need on that busy corner is 10 million residents coming and going all the time. If it's a drugstore, I'm sure Fred's will be pleased.
-
Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
I've been wondering the same. That piece of land it a lot larger than it looked before with the houses and trees. I'm glad all that is being built there, because it's only 2 minutes from my house.

Well, it makes more sense that it is a drugstore, you have the new Texaco/Arby's about to launch on the sw corner, the FNB branch/Eskimoe's/ Fox's pizza and the "Malone Towne Center" on the nw corner...I'm thinkin' NO trailer park there.

Hadn't heard that for sure, but I did make the comment when I heard drugstore that maybe it would be a CVS since we had everything else already.
And, splicer, I live close as well, so I'm hoping it's something "I approve of" since I'd have to go by it everyday. :icon_wink: Yeah, pretty soon we won't ever have to leave that part of town. Wow, that is what a shiny, new toy will do to people. Not a huge Mccalister's fan, but I would have given a right arm to have places like that at Tech while I was there. Burger King and Taco Salad from the makeshift Mexican place and Chik Fil A were about it while I was on campus.

That's what splicer said on page 1, and I see someone else just posted Toliver.

Re: Logan's Roadhouse Coming to DAWGTOWN
Go to any semi-busy intersection in America now days chuck a rock an any direction and the odds are good that you will hit a Rite-Aid, Walgreen, or CVS.

It must not have been that long ago since you were there. I was there three years ago and that is all they had. I walked through campus not too long ago and not much has changed.

I don't care much for fast food joints on campus. We got pretty girls at our school, let's not chunk them up.

If you're good, you might hit 2 out of the 3 (but you've got to chuck that rock pretty hard).

I'm sure those guys know about marketing, but doesn't that market seem to be over saturated? Are they selling convenience?

No they're selling overpriced drugs at a great margin.

Must be a heck of a margin. Are you loaded up on drugstore stock?

No, but the first Walgreen's outside of Chicago literally put several local pharmacies out of business in Hot Springs in the 1960s, including the Rexall store owned by our family.

I've always wondered why almost every Walgreens I ever see has a CVS across the street. I don't see why they always end up in the same places. I assume it's on purpose (by one or the other), but I can't figure out why.

It is on purpose.

Why?
If there is already a Walgreens sitting there, does CVS think they can get some spillover RX traffic? Or vice versa? Or are they trying to drive the other one out of business? Does that work? Does it help both stores by making that intersection a "RX district" the way you'd have a bar district or museum district?

Could it be like Wendy's original plan? They always located a Wendy's in sight of a McDonald's franchise.
