The point was that even when playing at the highest level women's BB could not pay for itself.
Regarding the Techsters and their effect on men's BB, it's indisputable that Tech fans were so enamored with being relevent on a national stage, in any sport, that any success by the men on a conference level was unfairly discounted. Combined with the limited overall athletic budget, and DR's failure to understand the economic dominance of men's BB over women's BB, the result was a disproportionate emphasis on women's BB. These factors unquestionably combined to slow the progress of men's BB at Tech.
Of course, we want to strive to be outstanding in everything we do, but to say that the Big XII and other conferences know that women's BB is a big frickin' deal and that is why they continue to invest in it is laughable. They invest in it because Title IX forces them to spend a lot of money in women's sports because they make a lot of money in men's football and BB. Since they must spend this money SOMEWHERE in women's sports, they spend it in women's BB because of all the women's sports it's the most spectator friendly.
Great post.

LA Tech needs to be good at EVERYTHING, guys. Some of you people are still living in the 1990's. You don't realize that women's basketball is a pretty big frickin deal now. The Big XII --and the other major conferences-- know this, and have continued to invest in women's basketball. Meanwhile, you guys go the other way. :icon_roll: Do you have a clue how backwards that is?
Baylor routinely sells 10K tickets to women's basketball games and appears on TV all the time. Some of the other Big XII schools are almost as successful. When they pack 7K to 11K in for a game, that's a lot of revenue, people. You guys just haven't fiigured it out yet. As usual, some LA Tech folks will be the last to know.

Some will never learn that one is not dependent on the other........ We need to be working toward MBB, WBB, and Football to all be as relevant on the national scene as our Lady Techsters once were. That should be the goal.

WBB will always be dependent upon the revenue producing sports--fb, mbb....

Yes, those sports bring in the most revenue. No one is disputing that. The fact is that the Techsters were something to be proud of on a national level and we were longing for that. We want to be that in MBB and Football, as well. Hopefully, it is coming!
It isn't a contest. It is about being the best in EVERY sport we can!
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Fiscal restraints force prioritization. Football and men's BB must be first priorities with all other sports prioritized by local, regional or traditional preference.

MBB hasn't been producing revenue at Louisiana Tech; therefore, you can't say that WBB is dependent upon our "revenue producing" MBB. WBB has traditionally outdrawn MBB at Tech, even last year.

I think he was speaking generally, not specifically to Tech. And while the women have outdrawn the men in BB, they remain unprofitable. I'm believe that attendance for both will increase next year, but predict the men will outdraw the women next season.
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Part of our conf revenue comes from NCAA men's basketball.

That's not enough money to nearly cover our head coach's salary, and we get that money no matter how much we invest in MBB.

I agree with what you are saying, but Boxer's love of MBB typically blinds him to the facts. I also don't think MBB or WBB can ever be a consistent revenue producer at Tech.

That's because the administration decided to invest more in wbb than bb--which was stupid. Even after making an adjustment, there is still an investment discrepancy--in relative terms.
Something exciting could be built at LaTech with regards to men's basketball. In fact, we could be the premier program in the state. You say that it will never be a huge draw--I say you're WRONG!

Women's BB is not profitable anywhere, but I firmly believe that our men's program can make annual appearances in the NCAA tourney. Win a first or second round game and the money fountain starts to flow.
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
If you win in men's basketball, you can make good money. The same cannot be said for women's basketball. Just the facts.
