Re: Study recommending merger of LSUS and Tech to be released today
Basically if the deal means we stay in the ULS system, isn't it really a matter of more mouths in the system with the same basic level of funding floating around.
I assume we wouldn't get the money from the LSU system that supports LSU-S. Would the increase in student population + the tuition and fees from that campus make much of a difference financially, if all of a sudden the day to day funding of the campus must come from ULS?
We also are no closer to landing a law or medical school of any kind. We truly need a high level graduate school attached to the university. I don't believe they offer any masters level classes that we don't have covered in Ruston either.
The other side of the coin is we would get an increase in students and shreveport would be ours semantics aside. As of Sept 2011 LSUS report basically 4,500 students enrolled.
Fall 2011 we were right at 11,500 with about 2,500 of that grad students. I don't know how many of LSUS's 4,500 were grad students.
That basically would put our total enrollment 16,000.
Re: Study recommending merger of LSUS and Tech to be released today
At 16,000 enrolled we would be almost the same size as ULL which has the only game in town on their side of the state at the FBS level.
The real boost to us would be for us to absorb LSUS and control Shreveport, and the state find a least one in a pair of balls and ReJC the JUCO on the Bayou.
We could gain and revitalize the Pharm school, absorb the brightest (don't laugh) of their 7,500. Conservatively putting us the only game in North La with around 20,000 students.

This will increase/better our brand.

If this happens, would that mean that the University of Lafayette have to go back to University of Southwest Louisiana since it would no longer have a partner in crime?

Size would be good, but what about quality? Will this knock us out of Tier1?

The combined single institution would continue to be a Regents-designated statewide university, operating in two campuses of equal importance—rather than “main campus” in Ruston and “branch” campus in Shreveport.
I'm not crazy about this part.

It leads to a potential of Shreveport becoming the main campus and Ruston becoming a branch, if not closed. But then again, that is my "fear" of any merger with Shreveport.

Thats asinine. Louisiana Tech University will never cease to exist in Ruston.

I thought part of Tier was # of post-grad degrees awarded; plus increased research with LSUHSC would help cement our spot in Tier 1...
I don't like the equal campuses thing either, does LSUS have dorms? If not then it will never be more than commuter and would be a "branch".

Tech would give Shreveport a little swagger.
Re: Study recommending merger of LSUS and Tech to be released today
I'm pretty sure one of Reneau's imperatives was that the main campus would have to remain in Ruston.

They have campus apartments that are behind WK Pierremont .

Not true. Even with all it's great attributes, it is more in line to be moved and/or closed all together.

It is. And being in Louisiana, that stipulation will last all of 10 years max after he is gone. Ruston doesn't seem to have the political support to get what is necessary done (closing of ULM/GSU, increase/keep funding), so there is little to make me think they will have the power to keep Tech in Ruston if Shreveport were to start as equals, but then see enrollment and support increase in ways Ruston has yet to dream.
Re: Study recommending merger of LSUS and Tech to be released today
I've changed my mind. I think LSU is trying to offload its dead weight onto Tech and the ULSystem. No thanks.
Re: Study recommending merger of LSUS and Tech to be released today
The article states LSU Med would not be affected which means its stays in the LSU system, so I wouldnt think we would have any more access than we already do.
I dont think quality would suffer picking up the LSUS kids.
If we were to pick up all of NLULM it would thats why I said their brightest, we definitely wouldn't want all of them. :)
