Re: University of Louisiana System Name Change Policies and Guidelines
Just call them ULL, their admin doesn't have the backbone to really try and push it, and I believe once T-Boy is out of the ULS board they'll probably get even more conservative. There current stance is that they are University of Louisiana at Lafayette and their nickname/mascot is Louisiana Ragin Cajun's or Louisiana for short....:rolleyes4: So technically they aren't changing their name as they aren't even touching the UL@L stuff. They snuck through an approval to drop the first " 's" from their athletic Louisiana's Ragin Cajun's.
Doesn't really matter though, their main conference media contract is with ESPN and they've apparently created some bad blood with the folks in Bristol and are always listed as UL-Lafayette or ULL and quite often have Lafayette Leopards logo's.
Re: University of Louisiana System Name Change Policies and Guidelines
The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, “UL,” and/or the phrase “U of L” are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations
(alumni associations, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic,
public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the
University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the
municipal location of the institution.
This is the one they are so blatant about.
Re: University of Louisiana System Name Change Policies and Guidelines
I haven't read it yet. I will. Is there a penalty stated for disobeying that law?

Of course not.
This was written for two reasons. To satisfy the lsu legislators who had blocked the first attempt for them claiming UL and to indirectly allow NLU into the Sunbelt.

Actually this is the one they have a blatant disregard of:
Quote:
All uses of the name “University of Louisiana” must be followed by the word “at”and the institution’s geographic location. No typographic variations within the name
are permitted. The word “at” must be no less than 50% and the geographic location
must not exceed 100% nor be less than 80% of the University of Louisiana name.
Any institutional use of “University of Louisiana” without the “at” and geographic
location is prohibited.
They use just "Louisiana" which is not prohibited or mentioned and claim it's an abbreviation of their nickname-Louisiana Ragin Cajun's, but they do the UL at Lafayette, all over the place.
Case in point the ULL license plate:

Re: University of Louisiana System Name Change Policies and Guidelines
The University's name was changed by Act of the Legislature in 1970 the Act No. 102 of the Regular Session can be found in the Acts of the Legislature. I am attaching a photo of the Act. The poor drafting of the legislation creating the ULS system did not effect the name of Louisiana Tech, as this was merely a listing of the schools that would be included in the newly renamed System. So anyone who does post on sites for the Cajuns should refer them to this legislation as definitive.
I would think even a slow reader/learner should be able to understand! ;)

You can't spell skull drug without usl or ull.

I did, and what you said was my interpretation as well. I wasn't clear enough in that what I wrote was what the Cajuns claim. I have tried pointing out they are not reading the statute in context, but alas to no avail.
Re: University of Louisiana System Name Change Policies and Guidelines
I'm just waiting for the day when some cajun sues them because their use of "cajun" is embarrassing to his race.

Gotcha. Just goes to show you can't cure stupid.

Is it time for a lawsuit? I know Sandra Woodley on a professional and personal basis. I like her, respect the job she is doing, and wouldn't want to drag her into a mess, especially one as silly as a name thingy. Maybe no one has simply spoken to her about this issue, with a, let's say, passion and "we're not gonna take it anymore" attitude.
To be honest, this is the first time I have read the policy. In the past, I have depended on others' comments/opinions of the policy. It is clear.
I say let someone else fight the battle. Louisiana Tech is secure. LSU-br and ULM may have something at stake, so let them cry over it in public and we can sit back and watch.

You're fighting a losing battle my good friend. That's like trying to point out the sunset to Ray Charles.

That's a fact. As a Cubs fan, and watching the Saints currently crumble before our eyes as I type, it feels right.

I agree wholeheartedly. Our name recognition is secure.
