Hurricane Laura

I read a survey a while back that noted that Shreveport is the most tornado prone area of Louisiana. In fact, I want to say that it labelled Barksdale as the single hotspot. The only real classic plains style low precip rotating wall cloud I have seen in my life I witnessed on the way over to Monroe from Ruston in college. That storm had dropped a tornado several minutes prior that killed at least 2 people. Still, north Louisiana is between classic tornado alley and Dixie alley which starts to ramp up near the MS river. The lone F5 in Louisiana history hit near the MS river and traveled into MS.

Marine layer protects those of us in deep south Louisiana most severe weather, save a rare occurrence like the April 24, 1908 tornado that hit Amite and Purvis, MS. Still ... Enterprise AL, Hattiesburg MS and Bassfield MS were all violent tornadoes within the last decade or so that are much closer to the coast than the historical record indicates is normal.

The Barksdale bubble is real.....weather systems that should smoke Shreveport with hail and high winds, tend to dip south to Stonewall or north to Benton.

Happens all the time. No explanation, its just reality. I handle a ton of insurance repairs as a contractor, its a real phenomenon

Oh and whole house generators are the best thing that you can invest in for your home - no lugging out a generator, no flipping switches and counting watts & amps - not extension cords - power goes off/generator comes on...

I think you’re right. Lost power at my house (Hwy 546 West Monroe) Thursday at 11:00 and it’s still out.

In the grand scheme of things that isn't very long. It is just a matter of when, not if. There are towns all over the plains and south that live under the delusion that their town being in a special valley or behind the right hill or physical feature in the landscape protects them. I know a lot of people in the various tornado alleys around the country and this is a VERY common belief. I also know of plenty of stories in history where their luck ran out, often tragically aided by rampant belief in such protection. In fact, Katrina's death toll was aided by locals forgetting Betsy, the 1915 hurricane etc.

This belief is so rampant, it is dealt with the NOAA's tornado FAQ.

Hearing it'll be at least two more weeks before Suddenlink will restore Internet/cable services for Natchitoches. But, they are offering "free" WiFi if you sit in the parking lot of their building.

Chatted with a couple guys from Georgia Power & Light yesterday, brought them (the crew) some bottled water. They are working 16-hour shifts in the heat and humidity, staying at an old dorm on NSU's campus...think Jenkins-McFarland, egad! Then contrast these guys with the spoiled brats of the NBA and NFL threatening not to play because the police shot a rapist. I have not watched the NBA since Karl Malone retired...and I only watched then, when he was with the Lakers, hoping he would win a ring. Now, I am adding the NFL to the list.

Hollywood pieces of shit, craphead professional athletes...don't need any of them. The real heroes are fellows like these guys from GPL, away from their families, doing hot and dangerous work, all to render assistance to those in need. And, they actually thanked me for bringing them an ice chest of cold, bottled water! I could only respond...No, thank you!

Duly noted. Indeed, those GPL guys are the real hero type's in this country. Personally, I'm just not happy with ANY of the professional sports right now. The social engineering coming out of our professional sports and entertainment venues today is mind boggling. It's hard to like any of the sports when the players want to take a "moral" stand on the back of a repeated rapist and woman beater with a rap sheet a mile long.

You hope that this COVID period has offered most Americans a time for worthwhile reflection. I look forward to a day when we have a new generation of professional athletes and entertainers that support a more balanced and common sense approach to social justice and progress. I think that's what it's going to take.....a NEW GENERATION of athletes and entertainers, because the ones we have now are dug in, and many are too invested in the wrong issues to turn back now.
