Here's my thought after not sleeping very well last night. I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to give a little credence to persnickety and suckup. I'm very disappointed in Scelfo and to an extent Dooley. Everyone keeps saying how we have no talent, but keeps forgetting the fact that Dooley has already stated that our tight ends are the best he's ever been around. With that in mind, why hasn't our offensive coordinator set up packages that create mismatches with those tight ends? Why doesn't he insist that to our qb that those are his primary targets? He can isolate them on linebackers. He can use more than one where he has one coming out of the backfield. Heck, line DM at wr more often and put one at te and the other at fb. As far as Dooley goes, why hasn't he noticed that hasn't been getting done and addressed it with Scelfo? If we don't see some offensive improvement by using our strengths (the te) by the end of the year, I'll be terribly disappointed if Dooley keeps Scelfo. I agree with suckup. They couldn't win crap at Tulane when he was there. As far as his "training" future NFL qbs, I maintain they got there on their ability much like Luke McCown did rather than their coaching.
Don't me wrong, I think we should FIND A WAY to get Dennis on the field for the majority of plays. But, Champion cannot be relied upon to get the ball to anybody. The passes he completes are mostly guys that are uncovered. Obviously, there were several drops last night--with Livas leading the way--however, my point is WHERE Champion decides to throw the ball. He's always looking for the bail-out or overthrowing the long ball so that it won't get intercepted. The kid just isn't getting it done and I don't think Dennis can help him stop locking in on one receiver or looking to dump the ball off, he has to quarterback.Quote:

My point is that, with those matchups, I think the tight ends (not just Dennis), will be open enough that even Zac can hit those passes. Of course, when I talked about game planning for the tight ends, I didn't have any particular qb in mind.Quote:

The coaches have to use what businesses have been using for ages......cause and effect analysis and Pareto analysis. There are obviously more than one variable causing this. I contend that the top of the Pareto chart is the QB play, but it just may be the receivers play as the main cause.Quote:

Brandon Cox has more tools than Champion but they have a similar style. If we created the offense around what Champion can do and not what they want him to do, he and the team would be more successful. Also, you can not abandon the run. I agree with Doc Marvin, use your most skilled players (our running backs). Had we been running ball, we could have done to them what they eventually did to us (continually to chip away at the defensive line).
You don't keep running into an 8 or 9 man front. We wouldn't have worn them down. We would have just punted sooner. The gameplan we ran DID suit Champion. Lots of screens and short routes that he can hit with occasional deeper play action. They figured that out, put there DB's on an island, stacked the box and dared us to throw it deeper than 10 yards. Champion and our WR's are not effective at intermediate and longer routes. Don't you get it? There was not a solution to the problem last night. The only solution is to recruit better players on offense. Thats it. It's not going to be fixed with a bye week or extra coaching or practices. It' going to be fixed by good recruiting, and thats it.Quote:

I said this on another thread, but Champion is not playing well enough to justify his getting the majority of the snaps. We need to be working Jenkins and Mosley in more to get them more experience and ready for next year. Last night they waited until the walls were caving in to give Mosley a drive. Give him a chance to establish a rhythm and THEN evaluate what he's doing. Don't wait until Champion has dug a grave for us to put in a backup.Quote:

That might actually be the case. I wouldn't be shocked next year if Mosely is a full time WR. Ensminger is our starting QB and a true freshman is second string with Jenkins on the third team.Quote:
