I hear there are presently still 30 national emergencies running, declared by past presidents and they have never been closed out. I don't know how much of that is true since I haven't seen anything mentioned on Facebook about it. Hopefully someone will post the real story soon.
In the meantime, we all know, even the libs here, that because it will be Trump declaring this national emergency it will be a "Constitutional crisis," never mind that previous prezzes have done so in the past, without destroying the Constitution. I also find it awfully hypocritical when libs decry concerns about the Constitution when they plot everyday how to thwart it!
In a political sense, it will be interesting how this plays out re: the 2020 POTUS campaign and other politics. Really the number of people still fence-sitting and who might be swayed, one way or the other, is so small....less than 5% of the electorate, it probably won't have any real effect.
Politically, this is his Green New Deal.
Wow! there are 58, or have been 58, dating back to Carter. One of them was a National Emergency to stop the importation of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone. Whoa! now that was definitely a national crisis. Once loosed on our streets those diamonds were hijacking cars, driving under the influence heading for New Jersey! Wreaking all kinds of havoc! And then there was the great illegal rough diamond epidemic when college students were jamming them up their noses. Death and destruction!!
And how many of those involve appropriations?
But if Trump chooses to go down this road, it does set the precedent for the next democratic president to declare national emergency when they can’t get the legislative victories they are after - climate change, gun regulations, health care.
You bet your a$$ they will. Classic short-term temper tantrum that will result in fundamentally changing the way we "govern". We're moving closer and closer to a president who can dictate instead of lead. If the GOP backs this, they prove themselves to be huge hypocrites (as Trump AND Pence have previously excoriated this sort of move).
That's not even to consider the profound logical inconsistency of this move...it's an emergency he chose to do nothing about for 2 years?
You guys that wanted Trump to burn it all down...you got what you wanted.
