And the success of the merger may allow the state to try merging other campuses around the state. Time to trim some deadwood from the state coffers.
Hurt NSU? Not in the short term, it won't. And, I don't think it'll have a measurable impact long term either. In fact, I think the merger will help NSU going forward. JMO. But, LSUS' general undergrad population is more on par with NSU's. For the most part, NSU has not competed with Tech for students. But, it has most definitely competed with LSUS, and LSUA.
I am surprised (perhaps, I shouldn't be) I am the only one on this board who seems to understand the dynamics of the student populations of regional universities. By "regional" I mean geography: CENLA, ARKLATEX, ARKLAMISS, East Texas.
Perhaps they are misguided, and maybe sitting wherever it is you are, you know more about their students, recruiting efforts, quality of students that enroll, etc... but I can tell you NSU powers-that-be support this merger. I mentioned elsewhere that this summer's Freshman Connection at NSU, for the first time in their history, is "sold out." They are scrambling to reopen a recently closed dorm to accommodate more students. Now, not all HS kids that attend such an event end up enrolling and actually attending in the Fall. But, NSU thinks just the possibility of the merger occurring is driving students to explore NSU.
Now, some NSUers are looking eagerly at LSUA. Some HOPE! the Tech-LSUS merger happens and is successful, and the state will consider an NSU-LSUA merger.
We all agree there are too many 4-year universities in the state.

The LSU Commitment plan isnt worth the paper it is written on. There is no funding to back it up,according to testimony by LSU on Monday here in Baton Rouge. They are going to have raise money from donors in Shreveport to pay for it. Who is going to make that ask? Dr. Lombardi? Gone. Dr. Martin? Gone. The administration at LSUS, or the faculty,or the alumni association, all who have been extremely critical of the business leaders, and Community Foundation here in Shreveport? The LSU System is falling apart. LSU One, and the Flagship Coalition have their own agenda, and it doesnt include LSUS. Attacking the BOR hasn't worked for the past, and it certainly did not work before the House Higher Ed Committe on Tuesday. In case you missed it the vote was 14-4 to support the merger.
That's powerful testimony right there from Mike Wood.

The Shreveport Times has posted an article by Dr. Rozeman in support of the merger.
Commentary: College merger will take north La. from good to great

Does anyone have copies or summaries of the old reports on the merger. Like the one from the 90's? The link in Dawg06's post doesn't work anymore. Quite a few of the pro-merger pieces don't work anymore.

If you search for the article's title or link in google, you can usually find a cached link to the article.

Also take into account that two of the major private donors to LSUS here in Shreveport have passed away in the past 1 1/2 years and I sincerely doubt the inheritors will continue the support. LSUS is in DEEP TROUBLE!

Excellent!
This says it all. The free market has spoken. After all, universities exsist to produce a "product" that is needed by someone else. How much they are willing to pay for that product is a direct index of its value.
Over the course of a 40 year career with a major international corporation I had the opportunity to hire many engineers and science graduates from many US universities. Based on that experience, the schools that produced the very best products were Texas A&M, Rice , Colorado Mines, and Louisiana Tech! And not necessarily in that order.
