Actually, the original Klan started as a bunch of drunkard former Confederates who thought it would be fun to dress as ghosts, pretend to be dead Confederates come back to haunt blacks, former slaves. There biggest event was a Christmas party. They would ride thru black communities hollering like ghosts. It wasn't until about 1867 or so, that some in one of the Klan chapters started getting pissed about the carpetbaggers stealing from Southerners and all the wrong-doings. It began with a beating up of a couple of carpetbaggers and a warning to all if they didn't leave the South, they too would be attacked and beaten. It escalated from there when guns got involved...
The details of the history across the South, and into some northern states like Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, is too vast and complex to relate here. Suffice it to say, for many it became the continuation of the war some wanted to keep fighting....you may know that General Robert E. Lee could have called for a guerilla war and tens of thousands would have followed his lead. Lee saw no honor in that though. The rise of the Klan was organic...it just happened in isolated groups scattered across the country and their primary targets were the carpetbaggers, later, "uppity blacks" were targeted too. There were killings, retaliations, and then more killings. Then the killing grew more indiscriminate. Soon, blacks who lived in farming communities, many on the same lands they had toiled as slaves on, were targeted. The violence grew....Federal troops were called in....the "war" continued. It deteriorated into mob violence...it was no longer a "war" to kick out dastardly yankee carpetbaggers, it was just killing. Nathan Bedford Forest resigned as the grand wizard when the organization lost its way...it was too violent even for him....and there was no honor in it any longer. As the killings were motivated by revenge for atrocities it had grown into vicious cycle of "eye for an eye."
But it all started, in Tennessee, near Memphis, when a bunch of former Confederates got drunk and thought it would be funny to go scare some blacks...things will spiral out of control if such "groups" are allowed to grow unheeded and unchallenged. It's worse when authorities dismiss such groups as just "communal gatherings of folks expressing their 1st Amendment rights."
Who didn't see this coming??

Celebrities and other wealthy residents of Beverly Hills, California, and the surrounding area may be happy to contribute millions to “freedom funds” to pay bail for rioters arrested in other major cities, but they’re moving quickly to shut down demonstrations — and the possibility of an “autonomous zone” like the one taking shape in Seattle, Washington — from coming anywhere near.
Using coronavirus as an excuse, the City of Beverly Hills issued a strict order earlier this week banning protests, demonstrations, and curtailing plans for an “autonomous zone” in one of the country’s wealthiest districts
