Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day
March 27th, 2012
Which of the following titles is actually the name of a country hit? "Leave the Kids At Home, Baby, We're Off to Nashville," "Drove Your Pickup Through My House," or "One Last Kiss Before I Go Hunting.' Give up? Okay, none of them are real titles, but you'd believe it, which is why we love the quirkiness of country music.

National Black Forest Cake Day
March 28th, 2012
A layered chocolate cake with whipped cream, cherry filling and a dash of liqueur, this dessert originated in the Black Forest region of Germany. Some believe that it was actually named for the traditional costume of the region, which is black, red and white like the cake. Some believe the costume was based on the cake. In fact, the German equivalent to the chicken and egg question translates to roughly, 'What came first, the cake or the costume?'

National Something On A Stick Day
March 28th, 2012
Some popular on-a-stick favorites include corn dogs, chicken satay and popsicles. Why not impress your friends today by making your lunch on a stick? Start out with meat and veggies. Penne pasta seems easy to work with. And cheese, but not if it's melted.

This isn't happening. This day doesn't really exist. It's all an illusion. Just smoke and mirrors. (And chicken wire, an old mattress and chewing gum. But now we've said too much.)

I remember when all the good stores were in DOWNTOWN Shreveport. But, due to all the parking meters....and having to put more money in them every several hours....free parking at shopping centers was a nobrainer. So, people quit shopping DOWNTOWN. IMO the parking meters put the DOWNTOWN businesses out of business!

The first National Doctor's Day was observed in 1933 because Eudora Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, thought her husband deserved some solid recognition. Looks like someone was gunning for the title of Best Wife Ever.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris was inaugurated on this day in 1889. Since then its had more than 200 million visitors, many of whom had Dad force them to pose for pictures, telling them to 'Stand right there, now hold up your hand like this. No, like this. Like you're holding the tower in the palm of your hand. It's a trick photography thing. Just trust me. Don't be so difficult. The sooner we get this over with the sooner we can all go get some more crepes.'

The Bunsen burner is that thing that sat on the shelf in your chemistry class that you always wanted to use in cool experiments requiring fire, but instead you spent all your time learning about the periodic table. The burner was invented by Robert Bunsen and, at its hottest setting, produces an impressive roaring blue flame.

April Fools Day
April 1st, 2012
Already up to your ears in loosened saltshaker tops, whoopee cushions and fake news stories? We'll spare you another prank today and give you the straight details. In the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, tricksters have to get their jokes in before noon. Anyone who does so afterward is the April Fool. Boy do they have the right idea because in the US it seems to go on all day.

International Tatting Day
April 1st, 2012
No April fools jokery here: today is a day for making doilies, seriously. Tatting dates back to the early 19th century and is the process of making lace by hand. And doilies are just the beginning. Once you're a tatting expert you can make collars that look like doilies, or pet clothes that look like doilies, or a shawl that looks like a doily. The sky's the limit.

Since there's a good chance you'll spend the day in a fog of lies, here are a few tips to tell if someone is being dishonest. 1) They avoid making eye contact. 2) They touch or scratch their nose, throat or mouth. 3) Their eyes dart back and forth rapidly and they sweat profusely while they insist that they didn't use the last of the milk and put the empty carton back in the fridge. Ah ha!

Read a Road Map Day
April 5th, 2012
All it takes is for someone to get you a GPS navigation system as a birthday gift and next thing you know you can't find the way to the end of your driveway without it. But if you've grown wary of following its every request, if its lead you to an abandoned lot and told you its your doctor's office, or mocked you for turning the wrong way, today's the day to set yourself free. Dig around in your glove compartment, or route around in the old fast food wrappers under your seat, somewhere in your car there is probably a road map. Use it wisely and you'll be on the road to recovery in no time.

Charlie the tuna just couldn't get a break. All he ever wanted was to be a Starkist tuna, but even with his snazzy specs and comedic outlook, he just wasn't bait worthy. Today we sympathize with our gilled buddy, as we've all been rejected at one time or another. But we won't let it get us down because, as Charlie can tell you, there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

National No Housework Day
April 7th, 2012
Keeping up with the housework is overrated. You can spend your whole weekend making your place look spotless, but by Wednesday you're right back to where you started. How did the kitchen get so messy when all you made was a sandwich? And how is the hamper already overflowing? Who's wearing all these clothes anyway? Today just put down the broom, pick up the remote, and let the dust bunnies fall where they may.

Draw a picture of a bird day
Kick it old school by tracing the outline of your hand and, ta-da, you have a turkey. Gobble gobble. Or draw a couple of squiggles over a beach scene to represent seagulls. Drawing a picture of a bird is easy. Unless you want it to look like a real bird.

National All Is Ours Day
April 8th, 2012
Okay so as of this morning it appears that all is ours, and since no one mentioned who gets what, it looks like we're just going to have to share everything. So who wants to get the first shift test-driving the sports cars? And who wants to spend that time jumping from bed to bed in the mattress store? Great. Now, I know this isn't fun, but someone has to clean up after the giraffes. If you do this then you get to spend the next hour in the bulk candy section and you can be a team captain in the paintball tournament after lunch.

Vesahka (Buddha's Birthday)
April 8th, 2012
While this holiday is sometimes referred to as Buddha's Birthday, it actually celebrates his birth, enlightenment and death. It is observed by making ceremonial offerings to The Buddha of flowers or candles, listening to talks by monks, and making special effort to bring happiness to the less fortunate. In Japan, Buddha's Birthday is always celebrated on this date, but in the Indian subcontinent and China, the date varies according to the lunar calendar.

National Cherish an Antique Day
April 9th, 2012
Whether its gathering dust in your grandmother's attic or sitting on an end table, clashing with the modern furniture in your living room, that old piece of junk is a precious piece of history. So today, stop to admire that ancient item of yours because it's a window to the past' not to mention it could be worth a fortune. Cha-ching!

National Winston Churchill Day
April 9th, 2012
On this day in 1963, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was named an honorary United States citizen. Churchill was the British Prime Minister during World War II, and he worked extensively with Roosevelt to achieve victory. He was the first person ever to receive the honorary US citizenship, and since then only 6 other world figures have joined the club. So let's all put on our trench coats, light a cigar, and pay tribute to Churchill and his legacy.

They're like, 'No thanks, I don't want to perspire all over my sweater vest. I'll just be over here in the shade until it's my turn. Now hurry it up. National Siblings Day
April 10th, 2012
Sure they sometimes hogged all the attention, not to mention more than their half of the back seat during long car trips, but they are also the only other people on the planet who understand how weird your parents are. So today give them a shout out. Thank them for never ratting you out when the vase in the living room mysteriously shattered all over the floor. Or telling you that your braces didn't look that bad. Siblings are like the best friends we never asked for but are really glad we have.

National Eight-Track Tape Day
April 11th, 2012
Kids these days. Scooting around on their skateboards, listening to that crazy rap music on their tiny little mp3 players. Those things are getting smaller every year. Surprised they don't just lose them in the folds of their giant sweatshirts or the massive pockets of their baggy jeans. Back in our day, music just wasn't music unless it was recorded on magnetic tape and rolled up in a bulky plastic cartridge that was sensitive to dust and temperature extremes. Yes, I'm talking about the eight-track tape. 46 straight minutes of sweet, sweet music.

On this day in 1934, three weather surveyors on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire recorded the highest velocity natural wind ever measured on Earth. Once the wind died down and they'd had a chance to comb their hair and clean up the papers it blew all over the place, they found the gust had reached a whopping 231 miles per hour. Ever since then, New Hampshire residents have been known to refer to major news events as, 'The biggest thing to happen since that really big wind we had that one time.'

Look Up At The Sky Day
April 12th, 2012
Look up at the sky today. Gah! Not directly into the sun. Are you okay? Yeah you'll be seeing those spots for a few minutes. Anyway, next time look up and admire the clouds. Hey, that one looks like a rabbit! Whoops, sorry, didn't mean to make you look again. You know what, just wait until tonight and check out the stars. Much safer.

Russian Cosmonaut Day
April 12th, 2012
It was on this day in 1961 that Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became this first man in space, orbiting the earth aboard Vostok 1. Many consider this to be the event that started the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. And we maintain that race isn't over until someone builds an amusement park on the moon.
