Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I just noticed that Scott's seafood place on highway 33 has closed. They've taken down all of their signs. I guess when Landry's opened back up, it finished them off.

I agree that Landry’s probably contributed, but I’m not sure why. I never liked their food. Scott’s was pretty good. Hate to see them close. The Bond family is good people.

Losing Scott’s hurts.
That said, it has been many years since I ate there - still remember the meal - a Friday night buffet fit for a king.

Where is taco bandido going to be? Also, we have a new grocery store on Farmerville already but don’t see a lot of activity. Anybody go there or know why they don’t seem to have a lot of business? I think advertising might help. Seems like a well-kept secret.

I don't know why it's not more popular but I'm not complaining, it's clean. The meat selection from their butcher is great.
Same folks that opened Calhoun Grocery iirc

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Prices are higher than Super 1. I go there for single items, but not a whole grocery list. Occasionally their meat prices will be better than Super 1.

Golden Corral is disgusting. Not because of what they do, but because of what the customers do. Have only "dined" at a GC twice that I remember and only because the folks I was with insisted on going, but OMG! people can be disgusting pigs and those people all "dine" at the Corral. And both of those times were years ago when it was still possible to hire folks willing to work. The wait staff tried to clear tables and help customers not be disgusting pigs, but it was a daunting task. Today, no way! Gross!

I thought it was Sizzlin'...Yes many a time. That was back in the day when people knew that a buffet was not an all you can eat mandate.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I believe Taco Bandido will be where Pizza Hut used to be. I ate at the Sizzler in Clinton, AR during Covid. They still had the salad bar but you had to let your waiter get your food for you. Golden Corral shut down in WM because yes buffet's are gross and covid of course. I'm surprised they are coming back. Maybe they will implement new cleanliness precautions.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Rustonites are all very excited about Taco Bandito. :icon_roll: Pretty soon we will have as many Tex mex places as we do real estate agents.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I'm glad Taco Bandito is opening in Ruston. It's fast-food Tex Mex and much better than Taco Bell, imo.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I don’t disagree with that assessment. I just wish we could have some variety. We have pizza and tacos. That’s it.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I guess we should all be thankful. We could be limited to The Fishtale in Newellton.

Our new bargain meal is craft beer/pizza. Ruston vs. Monroe/WM is a tie.
Chains along I-20 in both places are just bad. We've given up on "Walk-ons". It was good the first few times. Three bad trips in a row. Done with it.
One of my pet peeves is expensive Mexican or Tex-Mex. I can pick up a couple of steaks and cook them for what we pay to eat friggin' Mexican food now.
Not sure what Ruston has for seafood, but we have plenty of options in Monroe/WM if you don't mind fried. Flying burger in Ruston is good, but too pricey.
Monroe/WM certainly has Ruston beat regarding Italian options.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
We don’t have any good seafood options. Flying Burger is good for the fact that they dabble in a bunch of different stuff. Same for Log Cabin. Roma is good Italian, IMO. We could use another option there.
As far as the cost of eating out. The actual meal costs are not bad compared to other locales. Our sales tax is ridiculous and the 3% charge for using a card doesn’t seem bad until you add up a whole month. I guess people aren’t carrying credit card balances like they used to? The charge must be the only way to make some money.

Partially you simply can't win on variety vs a larger city. I will note that Flying Tiger is a great marketing partnership for ulm. I think Utility has done a few things like that, the Ruston Red, etc, but not sure how interested they are in something tighter.
I'd like to see more unique places in Ruston. We don't need a Bonjangles.

Ruston has a good variety of fast food chains, Mexican, and a few local joints. The local joints need to update their menu’s/ choices. Ruston doesn’t have much for fine dining or good fresh seafood.

Chic a Dilly is on it's last leg as a franchise - I don't frequent it anymore due to cheap ingredients and continued health sanitation violations
Moon's is no more as of December 31 - Jerry Bailey's kids don't want to spend the money to get the building up to date to meet minimum sanitation requirements
Port Au Prince is over rated and not very good in my book - I live a stone's throw from it and might frequent it twice a year
Never had a Pepe's - Now I will stick the Homer Gonzalez against anyone
Homer, Haynesville and Bernice haven't had a Sonic in over 7 years
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I agree on Port Au Prince. Most people I know rave about it. We like to go with big groups because it’s easy. Maybe 2-3 times a year for us too.

You really gotta let a restaurant settle down before trying to review it. Grand Opening and the following week(s) are always hectic.

We quit going to Dawg House several years ago because of slow service. After going several times before basketball games (2 hours or more before tipoff) and either being late or barely making tipoff, we decided it just wasn’t worth it. You would hope they could fix that with a new facility.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Living in Ruston, I can tell you I have had pitiful service from Log Cabin, Ponchatoulas, Dawg House, Chilis, Rotolos, Utility, Roma, and Portico. Rarely is it 2 chances in a row and rarely is it even more than 1 time a year. I don’t doubt people saying they have had multiple bad experiences. That hasn’t been our experience. The places with consistently piss poor service are no longer here, and Chilis os probably next. That is one place I haven’t been in 10 years.

Never had an issue at Rotolos (unless it was Sunday after church) or Ponchatoulas - the others are notoriously slow and Dawghouse is historically slow service (they actually are slower than slow)
It's gotten where I do Flyin Burger, Waffle House or Whataburger on game days

Update - Dawghouse
We had good service and good food at our last visit - issues are much improved
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
So - things are improving in the restaurant service arena - people are working again.
I am worried about inflation a prices though - that could slow down business quickly. Beer and alcohol is recession proof though.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I've always felt that Dawghouse had too big of a menu. Having a streamlined menu improves efficiency, not just with ticket times but with ordering time from customers.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
That’s possible. A steam lined menu might help with their pricing too. Outside of a couple of different types of burgers, a Buffalo chicken sandwich, the quesadilla, or a salad, I haven’t sampled much of the menu anyway. Wouldn’t miss half the stuff they offer.

The one in West Monroe has been consistently good. The Ruston location is being run by people who have no idea what they are doing at all.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
McAllister's sucks compared to what it was before rebranding and trying to keep up with the good sandwich shops. This is what happens when corporate marketing "experts" take over a southern model and try to change it to whatever they are doing.

In Ruston, it has nothing to do with that. The food is fine if you ever get it. You burn an entire lunch hour waiting on the food because the staff is so inept they couldn’t navigate their way out of a paper sack.

No way on the Buc-ee's thing. Not even a QT is likely. When construction of Tarbutton began, there was talk of a "Texas Best" type setup there. Any "Pilot" type truck stop will be a huge mistake. A large convenience store/restaurant set up like this https://texasbestshop.com/ would be nice.

Must be a much smaller version then. Is Buc-ees doing the "Neighborhood Market" concept like Walmart?
All the Buc-ees (I've seen) are currently situated on 50 or more acres with two or more entry and exit ramps to/from one or more fast moving four lanes. In addition, they have hundreds of acres surrounding the main store that are drawing more hotel/motels, shopping, and restaurants.
Otherwise, the traffic will be backed up all the way to Choudrant and Simmsboro.

Buc-ee's is out of state tourist consumer
QT will be local/area consumer for the most part

i asked about this December 8 and got one response below (not sure how to post two quotes at a time). Apparently it was not just a rumor.

If you read above you'll deduce that it is not the full size Buc-ees. My bad for not realizing there is a much smaller version of Buc-ees than those most of us have seen in Texas. A 50 acre location is being touted. It will still need some serious infrastructure improvement since it is being planned across from Ruston Jr. High.
-
Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
I'm fine with Buc-cee's moving into Ruston, but they really need to get somewhere in mid-Mississippi. They better not be going to say that Ruston and East Birmingham are as close as they need to be to each other. The state of Mississippi is a barren wasteland when it comes to decent gas stations--especially in terms of clean bathrooms.

they already broke ground in Mississippi…Biloxi area.
I doubt with one coming to Ruston they will want to put another on i20.

Just curious—why would that be different than the one on I20 in Terrill? On second thought, I thought you meant they wouldn’t want a second one in Mississippi. But i think you meant another one down the road from ruston to the east. That’s no different than one down the road on I20 to the west, is it? Lol, hope that made sense.

I would think Meridian or Hattiesburg would be good choices

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
Went into a Buc-cee's for the first time, the one in Terrell, this week. It's big...but other than that I don't see what all the fuss is about. It will probably do well in a Ruston location and bring some tax revenue to Ruston and Lincoln Parish, so that is good.

I20 is what I mean. They seem to go for about 2 hours between stores unless it’s a big city like Houston. I think that would leave room for a place around Meridian.

Re: Peanut Buckets Coming to DAWGTOWN
The area where it will be, across from Jr high, is actually 57 Acres. honestly dont think traffic will be an issue, never seen a major traffic cluster getting into Buc's anywhere i've been. now, on site, different story
now my thought is, maybe lincoln parish should find a different location for the JR high and sell that property. def going to be ripe for development once Buc's is there.

I realized that after I read the RDL article.
