Well stated. It seems like Dixon has been at Tech so long, he really does feel like family.

He is family as he is part of "The TECH Family"! So glad he's going to be rocking our house/the Joe again next year.

i can safely admit i was 100% wrong about k-dix. good to see him back.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I just hope he psts an outstanding GPA in the Spring & Winter quarters. Also hope he has an outsatnding 2015 season that puts all career rushung records out of reach. Last thing I want to see is a Marcus Lattimore situation. He no doubt will end up playing on Sundays.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
One down (Dixon), two to go. If I was to bet on the other two, I'd bet Holtz will be at Tech next year. Money talks, but it can't buy happiness. I'm thinking Diaz will be offered big bucks by somebody, and, based on the nature of the business, will probably take it. But perhaps I'll be proven wrong (I hope I am). I'm sure Tech will do what it can to keep him, but it might not be enough. I just hope that whatever happens, happens sooner rather than later.

Everyone here seems to think that. I'm not so sure about it, however. I hope I'm wrong.

what is status of replacement of coach that has already left. Some talk earlier about possible announcement before bowl game.

Creer, Livas, and Porter weren't able to make it in the NFL. Assuming Dixon is able to get and stay healthy, I think another year in college will help his draft stock. I don't think Dixon would make it strictly as a rushing running back. However, throw in his receiving skills, and I think he will likely make it. He gets blown up a lot. He has a lot of TFLs against him. He has to have at least a little bit of space to work with. Couple him with a good OL and he will be off to the races.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
He has to stop fumbling the football if he wants to be in the No Fun League .
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I know Diaz can do even more with more blue chip players on the right P5 roster, but his defense did show a tendancy to give up big plays from time to time. JMHO, but I think he will have 1 more year to rebuild his rep with us before moving on.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
We will retain all three until bowl time next year when one graduates, one bolts for P5 and the other settles in for the next decade. Skip ain't going anywhere.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I told my dad today, if I was Skip, whatever my bonus was from winning the bowl, I'd hand it over to Diaz.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Dixon has to stay. Dancy said he was one of the reasons he's coming to Tech. I'd love to see those two on the field at the same time. We're going to be loaded at RB next year.

Holtz gets $25,000 for making it to a bowl. A conference title would have paid him another $25,000. There are also other incentives in his contract.

Man I sure hope we can keep Holtz for the next decade and would love to keep Diaz as well.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I am shocked Dixon isn't declaring. Even if he would be a late round draft pick, I thought he was gone. Dixon must want to win the the Heisman for himself and Tech. Glad I was wrong.
Holtz wants an contract extension, I'm am thinking it is more about job security than money. He does seem to really like ruston and with players he is recruiting he plans on staying for a few more years. I would give him a 2 year extension for around 650 to 750 a year with bonuses for bowl win ands championships. That would keep him through 2017.
Diaz is hard to figure out. If he agreed to stay 2 years when signed like some have reported, I think next year will be his last. I hope it isn't but the money Diaz could be making big money at a big school is too much for Tech to cover. I wish Tech could make him Co head coach and sign him for the next decade. Pay him just under what Holtz makes but I am not sure that would be enough. The flattering press and the legend of Diaz after 1 season make him a hot property. We can't worry about Diaz staying, like Dixon if we get another year just be thankful and enjoy it.
So happy to be a Dog this year, even with the NSU a loss.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
You know, it's not out of the question that Manny unluckily finds himself in a UofTexas situation in the future and he becomes the fall guy again. In reality, he is still an unproven commodity at the P5 level.
Of course, I don't wish this on him, EVER. I wish him the best of luck, period. I just hope we leave the door WIDE open for him to come back if the situation arises. He's still a very young man.

Holtz is already under contract through the final game of 2017 (including a bowl game) at a base salary of $200,000 a year from the university and $300,000 a year from the Louisiana Tech University Foundation. There are also incentives for athletic and academic performance that cannot exceed $295,000 a year.
Holtz may want an extension beyond 2017. I'd say a raise is likely. The details of his contract from February 2013 begin on PDF Page 7 at the following link: http://www.ulsystem.edu/assets/docs/...mmittee000.PDF

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
According to a January 2012 ESPN article, Diaz was making $625,000 a year at Texas. I have not been able to find anything about his contract at Tech, but it is certainly well below $625,000 a year. Oscar Giles was making $200,000 a year at Texas http://espn.go.com/college-football/...ract-extension
There hasn't been much talk about the other coaches, but I don't think we can count on OC Tony Petersen being with us long term.
If Holtz stays and continues to be successful, the salaries should rise across the board.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Putting money aside for a moment, is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a little fish in a big pond? How many other defensive coordinators get as much face time on TV during games as Diaz does and are described as being a rock star. I'm sure that would diminish over time, but for now, Diaz is the talk of the broadcasts.

If you've never read any Malcolm Gladwell before, get "Outliers". It's a fun read about how the successful approach is often counterintuitive. The big/little fish/pond is examined at length in the first few chapters.

If Diaz, and his agent, play this right they can nail a HUGE deal, with great terms. Such that if he does get fired, by the P5 who hired him, he'll still be set for life. He can land anywhere at that point, even the Belch, and together with the $millions the P5 is still paying him, even a low 6-figure Belch job would suffice.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
If you want to see what assistant coaches are making, go to the USA Today report at http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/sala...ball/assistant.
Tech's total assistant pay is $999,700 for 2014 with Petersen getting $200,000 and Diaz $180,000. Rattay and Sloan are at the bottom with $70,000. If you click on the "Louisiana Tech" hyperlink within the table, you can see the Head Coach salary for the past few head coaches. Dykes got a raise from $450,000 to $750,000 from 2011 to 2012. I'm guessing Holtz can expect to receive something similar. ULL actually has a larger assistant payroll than Tech ($1,064,500 vs. $999,700). LSU has the largest at $5,499,269.
ULL Head Coach Mark Hudspeth's salary is $1,000,000 (was $360,000 in 2011, and $800,000 in 2012 and 2013). With sustained success, I can see Holtz getting over $1,000,000 within a year or so.

Y'all are dissing Precious. But before he was a coach there, Dallas was an annual loser. Look at the season they are having. I bet DD is playing a big role in this turn-around :shocked2:.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Look at what Precious started here when he was hired. We were at the bottom and slowly since then we have moved up in raising money, facilities and recruiting. I wouldn't buy a drink for the guy at a bar but give him props. That being said we need about 1 million to be added to our coaching salaries. SKIP will be a million dollar coach. Having a million dollar coach sets you apart in the G5.

He was a great A.D., which is what your post states. Coach - not so much.....
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
No, I would't call him a great coach. He did win a bowl game against what appears to be the best MAC program, but other than that his offense was a bland as it gets. Defense had its moments though.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Diaz came to the basketball game tonight with his kids. It might seem like not a big deal, but there weren't any other fb coaches there that I saw (nor many fans). I think showing that kind of support means something.

I imagine many of them left town to spend some of their holidays with extended family and/or in-laws before they hit the recruiting trail again.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Tech might not be able to match Diaz's MS State's $260,000 salary in 2010, but Tech could get a lot closer to that than the $650,000 he was making at Texas. http://www.sunherald.com/2014/12/29/...ider.html?rh=1

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I would like to see Tech focus on assistants (find an addition $250,000 to distribute among the assistants).
Extend Holtz contract for a year and increase his incentives, return to a bowl next year then redo his entire contract.

I don't agree that we should pay special attention to Diaz. We have ZERO chance of keeping him if money is his motivation.
Giving ALL the assistants a raise that will help us in the next round of hiring should be our goal. We lack in this overall category not in what our coordinators make.
Still makes me SICK that we gave Dykes the raise and paid Franklin what we paid him to be a part time coach.

Can't believe lsu would hire anyone from LA Tech. Seems like they should hire everyone from ull since everyone in the state (OK really just lafayette) think they have the greatest coaches on earth. Wonder if their coaches would even go with the Big 12 invite coming. :D sorry got confused with new years day and April fools day. 2014 was a great year for the University hopefully we build on that success with even more in 2015. Happy new year everyone!!!

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I'm thinking Diaz will need to put together another solid year at Tech before he gets another shot at one of the "big-time" programs. Another good year at Tech and his value increases. If this year was a fluke, he'd probably fail at the next stop and be back on the market. I haven't looked at a lot of DC contracts, but two years seems to be the average length. I haven't seen Diaz's Tech contract so I don't know when it is set to expire.

You might be right, but my only point was that there are many reasons why Diaz might accept an interview. In the current CFB landscape, coaches use job offers and interviews as leverage to get pay raises. I imagine he'll get one...one way or another.

This is also why Head Coaches don't want to stay at places like Tech.... it's harder to keep a good staff together.

Like it or loathe it, our coaches being interviewed and talked about is part of success. Hopefully, we'll have to get used to it!

It goes with the territory all schools have it...even LSU. Keeping a solid head coach that can recruit both players and solid personnel is what matters most and we have that right now.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Just like the world outside of athletics, there is a whole heap of difference between interviewing for a job and being offered a job. If someone was interested in talking with me about a job paying four times my current salary - I'd at least listen to what they had to say. With no "real" ties to Tech and/or the Ruston area, you'd have to wonder why someone wouldn't be interested in at least exploring other options. Diaz has shown in the past that he is mobile.

Stan Eggen is a re-tread for us. No thanks.

Were Giles to take the DC spot, Eggen would be a great DL/Assoc. HC.
He has done a lot for Tech and, if you see any continuity of improvement since Dooley, Stan has a lot to do with it.

I like the idea of Giles.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Skip's first choice when he got here was David Gibbs. Gibbs accepted the job, but then got a better job at Houston and went there instead. Houston's coach just got fired and Gibbs is interviewing with the new coach to stay at Houston. However, he also interviewed at Texas Tech too. He would be outstanding, but I'm not sure what he's going to do.

What does that even mean? We've never lost a head coach because he could not keep his staff in place. Nobody "like Tech" can keep a head coach unless you want to compare us to LaLaff. As you know they are not keeping their HC because they pay him big or because he has kept his staff in place.

Again, throwing good money at the situation like giving our DC a raise or the silly money we threw at Dykes/Franklin won't help our cause UNLESS we are setting the bar higher for salaries. The money we bumped Mike White and staff last year was a good move, but even that wasn't enough to keep two of his assistants in place.

It means that a head coach is more likely to keep his staff together if he has the money to pay them. Dan Mullens has a better opportunity to succeed than Skip Holtz because he has more money. Skip Holtz would love to have Dan Mullens' job because he would be more likely to succeed there because he would have more money to pay assistants. Tech is a tougher job than Mississippi State because if you get a good assistant, almost anyone can take him from us (we even lost Petey Perot to Southern Miss one time). If a coach gets a chance to go to a school that has more money, he's gone because it makes his job easier.

Comparing us to Miss.State...come on man. Give me an example of a school "like Tech". There are none. If a P5 school wants an assistant from a G5 they will get him. NOTHING you can do about it money wise.

By "like Tech", I mean most of the G5 schools.

Okay. Example of a school that is able to do what you describe...throw money at assistants and keep them in place?

I don't think we are talking about the same thing. I was just saying a big reason why our successful head coaches are going to leave is because it is so hard to keep good assistants here. I don't think we can outspend P5 schools either. An assistant as good as Manny does deserve as much money as we can afford though. He's really good. But the most we can afford is still chump change.

Gibbs ain't coming here, his wife hated Ruston

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Coaches are going to leave for one reason- to make more money for their family. Nothing wrong with that.

Yep...
To think otherwise is insanity

I understood what you said. I asked for an example of ANY G5 school who is doing what you describe.
So you think we should pay him more even though it won't help in keeping him here? Did you vote for Obama?;)

I think he's worth more than we are paying him and that's why he will be leaving us shortly. (capitalism, baby)

Good grief man! If we were paying him $400K he would be leaving for what ANY P5 is willing to pay.
Again, it is silly to think we can play this game.

Again... I think we are agreeing here. I'm not sure what you think I am trying to say, but it is what you just said. This makes it tough on a head coach... and that's why they bolt from Tech first chance they get.

No that is not the reason they bolt. They bolt for more money and to take the next step in their career.
It's a good problem to have. Compare it to the lack of a problem with had last year at this time.

Agree, I've just wondered if someone successful will ever stay and build a good program here, but this is another big reason why they won't.
