Skip just gave his two middle fingers to us by sticking with Smith the whole game

If Cam Newton was on the roster, he'd be redshirted this year and sit on the bench next year until J'Mar played out his eligibility.

No logical reason. You saw more scoring at the futbol match than there was at Aillet tonight.

It's all about our HC's ego. NO WAY Elliot is worse than the mess we've watched for the past two years. Many will say he needs the fast pace game. Holtz said last night he can't do that because it puts too much pressure on the defense "when" we go 3 and out.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Elliot should’ve gone in in the first half. J’Mar was more effective in the second half. I knew he wouldn’t be pulled with the O having some success and the game still in doubt.
The assertion that Holtz knows Elliot is better, but he won’t play him because he’s too egotistical is laughable.

I'm sure it is laughable to those who think Holtz is a great coach and still think Smith has potential.
What's really laughable is that there are some who believe Smith is our best option. He has below average accuracy skills, no touch, and can't run.
The Holtz apologists never stop. Keep believing he is our best option.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
As awful as J'mar was in the first half, I don't think you play Elliot in that situation. Last week, Elliot should have been given the 4th quarter.

It appears that Holtz has decided to force another QB to transfer. Not giving the guy ANY reps in the last two games is just nuts.

I agree. We will probably be down another QB and could be down 2 if our other backups do what is best for themselves. Would not blame them a bit.

I don't see Elliot transferring. Not because he shouldn't but because he's probably not going to start anywhere he goes. I do think we might get a graduate transfer out of this deal though.

I don't think Holtz would allow the second coming of Sokol or Driskel to replace Smith.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
As bad as Jmar did the first half he did dial it up in the second half with some nice passes allowing the WRs to make plays. First half and second half were almost night and day. There were a few drops on well passed balls that didnt help as well.

I wouldn't know except for what I heard on the radio driving home after leaving (again) at halftime. Still enjoy the tailgating, but these games aren't worth paying to attend. Boring, boring, boring.
Why we can't have an o.c. and a decent qb ??

He might consider an FCS team. I don't think he is just going to sit and watch this garbage another season, if he feels he can play.

Who knows? He might like his chances here. I wonder if Abraham will get to play against us? I think he would be the solidified starter for us had he stayed.

In an ideal scenario, Abraham throws for 350 and 3 TD’s in a loss to the dogs with J’Mar throwing for 150 and no TD’s. I hate to say that because I don’t wish for J’Mar to fail because of anything he has done. How much more blatant could the evidence get that you picked the wrong kid when our rockstar loses on the stat sheet to a guy that our coach dismissed without a chance?

Who got dismissed without a chance, again?

Nobody. Abraham dismissed himself.

Ideal? That’s like saying it’d be funny if we lost to Rice. Cutting off your nose to spite your face...

Exactly, Abraham would probably be starting for Tech instead of sitting on the bench for Southern Miss. I realize he didn't dress yesterday but, make no mistake, he would have dressed if the coach planned to play him. He's been benched. The head contusion from 2 weeks ago is way past healed.

I just have a problem with all the guys who have transferred. It is really convenient for Abraham to be able to say, “I just wasn’t happy or comfortable there.” If he was the starter or getting meaningful time, do you think he would have left? I don’t. Starters usually aren’t unhappy no matter where they are. All these players transferred for a reason. I think it our QB killing coach and system.

I was poking fun at someone else. Tech fans need to seriously consider some things.
1. Skip isn’t going anywhere if he doesn’t start losing a lot more games each year.
2. Skip isn’t going anywhere if he doesn’t start winning more games each year and get a few conference championships.
If I have just made up my mind that I can’t stand Skip and su want him out, I’d call path 2 more ideal than path one.

I agree. However, how confident are you that our coach can deliver option 2?

I’m a crappy prognosticator, but I feel fairly confident that option 2 is more likely than option 1.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Who are all of these stud QBs that transferred?
Walker stated that he wants to be a starter right now. Understood, Holtz hated to see him leave and he left on good terms.
Price Wilson (listed at 6'-1" 245, but was more like 5-11 260) and a sack drill dummy. Wilson moved on to Bryant University (who? where?) and has lead his team to a 2-4 record.
Abraham has thrown about as many TDs to the opponent as he has to his own teammates. With time he will likely fix that issue.
Elliott is a serviceable backup, Allen will be good in time, Cox was a walk-on that got Walker's ship, and we have some very talented QB recruits in consideration with this class in Kinkead Dent 6-5 195 http://www.hudl.com/profile/3999965/Kinkead-Dent and Jakson Thomson 6-3 200 https://247sports.com/Player/Jakson-Thomson-46040491/. Coincidentally, Thomson is from the same high school in Dallas that produced Matt Dunigan.

Not sure we have a stud QB on the roster at all. We probably have 8 guys on our sideline who could go 3 and out as often as QB1.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Bottom line is what matters most. The wins at FAU and North Texas were big. Dancy is more important than who's taking snaps from center in conference. If he's healthy, we're a tough team to beat in CUSA.

Thank goodness we have a defense. Our offense was funny to watch.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
As long as Holtz and Smith are at Tech, Smith will be the QB.
One thing I’ve noticed about our team is we are very slow starters. We are a different team towards the 2nd half, but I can’t tell you how many of our opening drives are 3 and outs.
We are also a far better offense when we go uptempo. Which makes me scratch my head why we don’t do it more often. Drives where we hurry the play usually results in us scoring.
This teams defense will keep them in every game we play, but our offense will never make it comfortable.

Was it the first drive Im thinking of here: number 74 basically kills it with an unsportsmanlike penalty?

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
What bothers me most about our QB is that even when he completes a pass, even on the short outside screens,
it is seldom in a location that enables the receiver to catch it in stride. His stats look pretty good usually.

It's the nature of the beast in Division I football right now. QBs all over the country are transferring left and right if they aren't the starter. I don't like the trend, but we can't pretend that this is a problem that is limited to Ruston. LSU lost its third and fourth QBs during fall camp.
Just look at what has happened at Georgia. The Bulldogs started a freshman, Jacob Eason, in 2016. He got hurt in 2017 and was replaced by another freshman, Jake Fromm. Eason transferred to Washington is likely the starter next year to replace Jake Browning. Georgia brought in another highly-touted QB, Justin Fields, who has played as Fromm's backup QB this year. It will be interested to see that situation play out and if one of them ends up transferring during the offseason.
I hate losing guys, especially a guy like Abraham who didn't stick around long enough to even compete for the job, but it's not an isolated problem and it's not anything that Skip Holtz is doing wrong. There are backup QBs all across the country who believe they should be starting, and they're looking toward greener pastures to get that opportunity.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Then there was Ryan Higgins, who watched as his coach brought in QBs from elsewhere, relegating him to the bench yet again. Then, he does something stupid, nearly blows his opportunity! but when the dust settles has one of the best seasons ever for a Tech QB, culminating in that exciting bowl win over a ranked Navy team. And it was Higgins' quarterbacking that led us on that game-winning drive. If his CFB career were made into a movie, many wouldn't believe it.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Big difference is there is a valid argument for why the starter is the starter at those other schools.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
With everyone transferring here and there and having to sit out a year in a lot of cases, it will take three or four years for this to shake out and for us all to see if this was a good or bad change. This will have some unintended consequences, not even remotely sure what they will be, but I bet there will be some surprises.
