So in your mind, we should not have initiated a travel ban to China, Italy, South Korea, etc. and allowed ANYONE who wanted to come here if they wanted to. This does not make common sense and is irresponsible and reckless. You trust completely what Communist China is reporting on about the extent of the virus?? Ban hurts this how?
That is not what I said.
I said that you have to weigh the costs and benefits, but there are some costs including what I mentioned. Some of these costs can be mitigated.
And how we handle travel bans today influences how quickly and transparently information will be provided to us in the future.
What I am saying is that a travel ban only saves us time, which is valuable when suppressing a disease that can overwhelm your resources, but that TIME is only as valuable as you make of it. In this case, we made very poor use of that time. We should have been testing more broadly weeks ago.
Trump knows how to get the job done!! A great negotiator!

You, of all people, should be tickled about the corona virus. After all, it gives you a chance to rid the population of a good number of us boomer racist homophobes that destroyed the government, housing market and economy for you tender young saplings.
This is your chance to follow the yellow brick road and let the great and powerful wizard be your guide.
Notice, however, it isn't the boomers that are panicking....it's your generation. If you cannot handle a virus, I don't foresee much that you will be able to handle.
I can see how you've been duped, thinking you control the climate and everything else under the sun. Reminds me of the movie "into the Wild" where some young pup wandered off to become one with nature, and it left him hungry and dying in a puddle of his own diarrhea. Expect more of that kind of stuff in the future.
“We would like the country to realize that as a nation, we can't be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago. It doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case.” - Dr. Fauci.
Most so-called experts say Covid-19 appears to be easily transmitted, person to person. More readily than the average virus is. But it is not particularly life-threatening. Not that we shouldn't take ordinary precautions. Now many in the field are saying many people will contract Covid-19 and never, ever even know it. Many people, like me, ignore minor symptoms of an "illness." I have gone to work many times running a low-grade fever, knowing I was somewhat "sick" but not feeling so bad I felt the need to stay home. I am semi-retired now and don't have the same obligations to report to a workplace anymore.
Of course, today, with all the hyped panic surrounding Covid-19 I suspect more people, like me, may opt to stay home. Perhaps out of some civic duty/obligation to not help spread this virus more. The greater "danger" is those who will be unaffected by the virus personally, maybe a slight fever and sniffles, spreading it to those with existing conditions (respiratory ailments) causing greater harm to them.
Again, according to some of these experts, it is forecasted that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans will eventually "catch" Covid-19 with the vast majority never knowing it, or barely noticing. Of course, according to some experts, that MIGHT mean greater danger in the coming years. These viruses tend to mutate and widespread exposure to Covid-19 now will mean the virus will exist "out there" perhaps reemerging in a deadlier form.
So, again, don't panic...just take sensible precautions.
“We are encouraging all people, including family members and loved ones, to not visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities," American Health Care Association President Mark Parkinson said Tuesday.
"Until we get this under control, our new guidance, as of today, is to family members, to loved ones: Don't visit the facilities; instead, come up with an alternate way to communicate," he said, including phone, text, FaceTime or Snapchat.
"The grim reality is that, for the elderly, COVID-19 is almost a perfect killing machine," Parkinson said.
All sensible precautions...
But, what about the workers in these facilities? My daughter is working part-time in a nursing home, about 20 hours a week, while she is in nursing school. She told me she comes and goes, sees patients, works directly with elderly patients, some on assisted breathing apparatus, and not even once has she been screened, even asked about symptoms she may have. Nothing!
I told her, YOU take precautions, so as not to bring any of that crap home with you.
I think the real danger is like dawg80 said. Many people will have the virus but not feel sick enough to change their regular routine. With no vaccine available that is a recipe for spreading like crazy. I am one of those people too. I've had a mild cough for probably two months now and still go to work. I might not even notice the difference if I am infected.
I highly doubt there is really a state that has zero or one case of this stuff. My bet is that it is widespread already and most don't even know something different is going on.
Our busy ports of entry and our ability to move freely through the country is part of our national identity, just like the second amendment. Sometimes these things may cause some discomfort, but they are freedoms we should not be willing to relinquish.
Officially a pandemic
So why did the socialist Dems. Obama/Biden/Holder/Pelosi/Reid do nothing to up America's response time and organization to battle pandemics while 8 years in office? Democrats don't know how to run state and federal governments efficiently and without
organized lying and cheating corruption. Of course the marxist loving media gives them cover. But a quick search brings these up even though they are spun.

H1N1 Widespread in 46 States as Vaccines Lag
By Jackie Calmes and Donald G. McNeil Jr.
- Oct. 24, 2009
WASHINGTON — President Obama has declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, allowing hospitals and local governments to speedily set up alternate sites for treatment and triage procedures if needed to handle any surge of patients, the White House said on Saturday.
The declaration came as thousands of people lined up in cities across the country to receive vaccinations, and as federal officials acknowledged that their ambitious vaccination program has gotten off to a slow start. Only 16 million doses of the vaccine were available now, and about 30 million were expected by the end of the month. Some states have requested 10 times the amount they have been allotted.
Flu activity — virtually all of it the swine flu — is now widespread in 46 states, a level that federal officials say equals the peak of a typical winter flu season. Millions of people in the United States have had swine flu, known as H1N1, either in the first wave in the spring or the current wave.
Although there has been no exact count, officials said the H1N1 virus has killed more than 1,000 Americans and hospitalized over 20,000. The emergency declaration, which Mr. Obama signed Friday night, has to do only with hospital treatment, not with the vaccine. Government officials emphasized that Mr. Obama’s declaration was largely an administrative move that did not signify any unanticipated worsening of the outbreak of the H1N1 flu nationwide. Nor, they said, did it have anything to do with the reports of vaccine shortages.

Overheard a two men talking at table next to me last night. Talking about a dad who returned from a business trip, didn't feel well, and got tested. Instead of self-quarantining himself, he went to a daddy/daughter dance. While at the dance he received an email of his test results which showed him positive. This type of behavior is what is reckless. He should not have gone, it is all common sense type of stuff. I don't need the government to tell me to wash my hands thoroughly, avoid contact with sick people, etc.
I still believe this is a coordinated effort by media to try to get at Trump.. maybe this is a little tinfoil hat type of thinking, but in 2009 as Ray pointed out before, More than 1000 Americans had died and 20000 hospitalized BEFORE an emergency was declared. I have a cruise booked for early May, and as if now, I still plan to go.
Oh come on guys...it's just like the flu.
Dang, Obama/Biden/Hillary/Sanders and the Chinese get their greatest wish; to kill the elderly and babies without death panels and abortion.
Yep, just more air, water and food for the elitist left and of course less carbon footprint with less planes flying and ships sailing.
Hum....I'm seeing a true picture here.

All are allowed but not caused by the Almighty. During the 7 year tribulation...then yes many judgements will be inflicted by the Almighty to try and get the world's attention and turn it back to Him.
I was posting per the response and actions of the liberal/socialist government to these type calamities.
I already pointed out what Obama’s response was to the H1N1, but one the legacies was a pandemic response team that Trump disbanded in 2018.
And you can see the timeline of the US response here:

I didn’t hear it, but someone told me that a “news” network reported a health organizations projection that millions in the US will die from this disease. If the percentages in China tell us anything, something like 75 people will die based on total population. That is if the current trend holds true.

Wow.. ban travel from Europe for next 30 days. As an airline employee that's gonna hurt, but I understand it. I had a member of my team who was leaving tomorrow to travel to Nigeria via EU.. He called tonight to say he is not going.
It sounds like this goes beyond travel and impacts all trade, too.

True, as they have different opinions and are allowed to present and argue them in public. The GOP eats its own. On the other side, the sheeple Dems fear going against Pelosi, Schumer and Obama and in the past the Klinton death mob. They cheer the most corrupt and devious of their ideology not matter how hypocritical and immoral. And their lack of effective and financially sound government at all levels shows.
Here is what he said in the speech:
“There will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings, and these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but various other things as we get approval. Anything coming from Europe to the United States is what we are discussing. These restrictions will also not apply to the United Kingdom.“
Maybe he just inadvertently added the “only”.
His speech was excellent! Let’s watch and listen to the anti-American Democrats tomorrow as they will still be playing TDS politics. I truly believe the Dems would love seeing 100,000 Americans die of this Chicon flu and the economy tank just to have their evil power in the DC swamp.
Futures have limited down this morning, so we will see how many circuit breakers we get today.
There seems to be some chaos and discoordination in the federal and local responses to individual cases, which is clearly being caused by inconsistency in the message from the top.
What we have seen is responsible private actors and state and local governments leading the efforts to mitigate the spread of this disease. A complete failure of leadership at the top.
And one more point about the speech. The comment that he made that “health insurers have agreed to wave copays for testing and treatment” is also a bit inconsistent with what was said two days ago when the insurance execs were in Washington. They agree to wave copays for testing - not treatment.
Lack of attention to details.
Yep!
Fortunately we have a great president, a true leader, in charge, not a Dem who would just eff it up, like obummer did with the Swine Flu outbreak. Don't need 300,000 Americans hospitalized and 13,000 dead Americans, like obummer caused. AND!! keep in mind everyone is saying Covid-19 is 10X more deadly and much easier spread than any general flu, like the 2009-2010 Swine Flu was. So, in theory, if 130,000 Americans die from this Trump would equal obummer's performance. That's where the bar is set because, after all, obummer was a great POTUS! Er, right Goosey, johnny, Champ, Jubru...?
Goosey loves himself some obummer and that competent leadership!
A big difference is that for H1N1, we didn’t have any knowledge of its existence until we already had an outbreak in the US. It had not been distinguished from the regular flu viruses at that time and we didn’t know that our flu shot was ineffective for it.
We new about C19 months before we had our first US outbreak. We knew our flu virus wouldn’t work.
You guys can play revisionist history with H1N1, but you have yet to point out even a single thing that the US should have done different with the info that was available.
In addition to his travel ban from China, which was implemented, against the wishes of you libs, Trump also pushed for sending our doctors, a response team to China, to stomp Covid-19 out at its source, just like the US did to stop Ebola in Africa. The Chicoms rejected the offer. Yes, it was the Chicoms, although I'm sure had they agreed, the libs here would have been voicing protests about it. We knew the dangers (the potential danger) of Covid-19 back in November, and Trump took steps to keep it out of the US.

Funny how no one is criticizing Quomo for sending national guard to quarantine a city.. They all seem to agree with this. But Cancel flights from Europe for 30 days? How dare he...
A couple of thoughts as we sit here on Thursday morning:
What I find more and more interesting is how this is playing out in the national media vs. local media around the country.
Local stations in the northeast and west coasts are playing this much like the national media. Over the top hype. But in speaking with friends, co-workers, and former co-workers in "flyover country' most of the rest of the nation has media taking a "Facts not Fear" approach. Level headed. No runs on supermarkets or drug stores, etc...
The big outbreaks aren’t in flyover country yet.
It’s in Caddo Parish

“The fact is that the way the system was set up is that the public health component that Dr. Redfield was talking about was a system where you put it out there in the public and a physician asks for it and you get it. The idea of anybody getting it easily, the way people in other countries are doing it, we’re not set up for that,” Fauci said.
“Do I think we should be? Yes, but we’re not.”
The virus is bad and all, but ...
Are we not even a little concerned that the socialists are taking control of municipal governments in east Texas?
SBA to provide loans up to 2 million.
Unless something has changed in the past year, the SBA does not provide loans. Only banks and other such financial institutions loan money. An "SBA loan" is actually a loan guarantee, and that is really an insurance policy for the lender. There are several different SBA loan programs, the basic one is the 7(a), which is up to a 75% guarantee toward the loan amount, should the borrower default. The lender (bank) is made whole up to that 75% threshold. However, the lender has to try to recuperate as much of the outstanding debt as possible, including seizing collateral (property) and suing the borrower for the rest. After some considerable effort the lender can turn to the SBA to be reimbursed any outstanding debt. THEN! using the power of the federal government, the SBA sues the borrower to recoup as much of the unpaid balance as possible. Usually that borrower must seek bankruptcy protection.
When fully explained all the ramifications, most would-be SBA loan guarantee borrowers opt not to pursue the loan.
And I am pretty sure the disaster assistance loan is not a 7(a) loan, but I don’t really know for certain.
Make up your mind. SBA loans are difficult to get even for those who have their stuff together.
Now this...
Had you ever actually been in business instead of a working stiff, you'd know that sometimes the timing is not right, but a person of integrity (which you lack) would NEVER look to blame somebody else for your bad decisions or bad luck.
I get it. It sounds like the current program is limited to those that don’t have credit and it covers debts and payroll. It is not clear from the program if you can get the loan in advance so that you actually have time to make payroll and payments on debt. I know plenty of small business owners that would have to lay people off if they lost all revenues over several weeks. When you go to the SBA disaster assistance loan forms it doesn’t look the same at the 7(a) forms.
I am not saying this SBA program is the savior for small businesses but it is something in the absence of literally ANYTHING from the federal government and our absent leader. It would be great if the federal government would provide something better, faster. Because the time to act is now, and small businesses are having to make these decisions without knowing what protection they will have.
I have plenty of integrity. I am not sure if you know what that word means.
I am not blaming anyone for someone’s bad decisions. In this particular case, folks that are shutting down their businesses are doing for the public good - not for the good of their own business. This type of disaster is manageable if people make these sacrifices for the greater good. It is entirely reasonable for our government to step up and provide a safety net for people to do what is right. Doing what you believe is right is fundamentally what integrity is about.
Integrity is not about hating Trump. It was not about me knowing Obama was a do nothing community organizer, but I didn't live my life to hate him, (like you with Trump). You live to blame this virus that your liberal friends have enjoyed on Trump. You are a sick person.
Wait until your Biden/AOC/Sanders get in office. There will be lines to get food and gas everywhere being the worlds newest Socialist/Marxist blend of “government “.
Yeah, very possible. Or, just the closing of their business, which we see much more often than a bankruptcy. I am still working as a business consultant, mostly on the side. I get calls from former clients and/or from folks who are disgusted with what has happened to the Louisiana Small Business Development Center services since I left in 2016. Most of my clients never declare bankruptcy because they are dedicated entrepreneurs and don't want to wreck their credit rating. I also guide them through a softer landing if their business needs to close.
The SBA could be much more helpful to small business if it could shed its trappings as nothing more than a federal bureaucracy. But...I guess that's not possible, is it.

In two months we will all look back and wonder why we overreacted so much to this.
I think Trump should adopt the Obama policy of never letting a good crisis go to waste.
If anything shows you have to control your borders and know who enters your country, this is it.
If anything shows what happens when you let other nations take advantage of you with trade, and in some cases take over multiple pieces of your supply chain that cannot be easily and quickly replaced, this is it. We need a thriving steel industry and energy industry here in the US, not to mention a pharmaceutical industry that is not dependent on other nations for supplies (I heard we don't even make the base compound for vaccines here, so when China decides to stop selling it to us....).
China is not our friend, and we should encourage (via tariffs) American industries to move away from having our economic development dependent on them. They are a highly secretive communist dictatorship that is hell bent on destroying us.
Not virus related, but....The Saudis and Russians should have all of their oil output heavily tariffed here in the US. I am not buying their explanation about why they are flooding the market (dumping) with cheap oil. I think they are thick as thieves and are colluding to destroy the US shale industry, which is bad for our national security. I know that many on here are too young to remember the gas lines from the Carter era, but I do and don't ever want to repeat it.

I think it might be a bit too abstract for Americans to imagine the psychological injury communities will suffer if we get to rationing health care in the case of emergencies. When you have to become an advocate that your love one actually receive the treatment that they need and you are being told that someone else is getting the priority... These scars would be enduring.
This is what we are trying to avoid and it is worth it.
Yep. I just saw that half of the passengers that tested positive on the cruise ship off of Japan had no symptoms. NONE.
You'd have to test every man woman and child (including all these illegals everyone on the left is so fond of) in the US, and even then you wouldn't catch everyone because there would be interaction between infected and non-infected individuals after they had been tested. Heck, even in there was no interaction after the test you should have already been exposed and still testing negative or just interact with something an infected person has touched.
All this hand wringing on the left (especially those with TDS on this board) is really tiresome and ignorant. Just take the same precautions you take with the flu and hope for the best.
If we exceed surge capacity for our local hospitals, what difference does it really make? How does our system not ration in that case?
I have only had one experience with socialized medicine and it was much cheaper and faster the US system. Same day, 100 euro, better drugs. Problem solved. Not that I would project that out over some sort of specialized problem requiring some sort of specialized, limited treatment options, but there are some aspects of socialized medicine that are actually better.
We bought some beans and rice a couple of weeks ago to avoid having to go to the supermarket when this outbreak gets to its worst. If my wife didn’t have to visit a nursing home every day and help with a brother that just has open heart surgery, I wouldn’t have any personal concerns, though I would still do my part to try avoid being a vector for the spread of this virus.
