Why do JC's in Texas have athletic programs? They are 100% commuter also -

Their gym is just that a gym (which might set 1,500) - which houses their PE department and is home to the Oylmpic Weight Training Center - and last time I looked, to graduate with a 4 year degree under any LA system you have to X number of PE hours -

And I think they have all of 4 sports on campus - maybe 6 at most -

Men's basketball, softball, baseball and women's basketball - and all those sports combined may have a total of 25 full scholarships -

You got it right DFM, just 4 sports. I couldnt find the funding information, thanks for the info.

And before we start throwing stones at other schools we need to examine our own house -

LSU-S competes on the NAIA level in all sports and I believe all those sports are supported 100% via the self imposed student fee - and since they don't compete in NCAA competition they can have a student athletic fee -

The students wanted sports and Marsala basically stated the money not there, if you want sports you have to fund it because LSUS was underfunded in everything else - so the students voted it in -

And here is a comparion on budgeted 2002-2003 state wide self generated revenues compared to state appropriated revenues for all state public universities - while we do better than some, there is ALOT of room for improvement and it's interesting some of the universities we trail - LSUS and Northwestern State just to name a few -

Why have sports at schools like LSU-S - the same reason you have sports at Tech - not everyone is capable of playing at an LSU or Bama, not everyone is capable at playing at a Tech, USL, Centenary or Northwestern -

The sports programs at a BPCC, Delgado or LSU-S provide those kids and additional place to continue to play ball -

And playing ball is good - even if it is soccer...

JCs in Texas that have athletic programs ARE NOT commuter schools. They have resident students living in dorms.

I bet y'all would be surprised at how much LSUS spends on its "athletic" programs.

LSUS is a NAIA Top tier baseball and mens Basketball school. Their gym is full for every basketball game. Shut up about wasting taxpayers money. Most of LSUS's stuff is from private donations.

Because we keep them JC's, We don't turn them into a pork barrel 4 year university....then underfund them.

LSUS was developed as a commuter college to make it affordable for more people to get a college education, not to serve as another athletics hole for the taxpayers to throw away their money. Its ridiculous for them to have any kind of sport that offers scholarships. It's better for fans to support their local high schools than a glorified junior college.

Not true , I played baseball at a commuter juco in Texas. Most of the Dallas county community colleges have baseball teams. At least Eastfield and Northlake do.

That being said there are WAY , WAY too many 4 year schools and athletic programs in La.

Well, this thread morphed a little....okay, a LOT! So, back to the point, good for JJ. I hope he and Blankenship lead the Pilots to a National Championship!

I may even hop up to watch a game or two. I started working on an MBA at LSUS several years ago...may go back and finish it too. So, as a former student, I count the Pilots among my favorites. Go Pilots!

Would I be surprised? Put some numbers out there and let me decide. So far all I have heard form you is how much they spend, but I havent seen any numbers to back it up.

I agree, dhussdawg...instead of blowin smoke, I'd like to see some actual numbers. Anyone can run their mouth about topics they know nothing about.

That is what people would rather do than look up the numbers though bulldawgs03. It is much easier just to blow smoke and hope nobody calls your hand on it like Dwayne did Cartek, yet he is still insisting that it is pork barrel politics along with the rest of his compadres.
