If we are going to talk authentic Mexican, I hate the "authentic Mexican" places in Houston. The dont have near enough the dairy products I like to put on my fajitas. It is a little more bare bones like what you would think of some poor Mexican living in Mexico would like. the fajitas are just tortillas, beans, and rice, period. Pico's is a place in Houston if you are ever in town and want to experience true Mexican, not my taste. As far as Americanized Mexican, El Teimpo is hard to beat here in Houston. Fajitas come with cheese, sour cream, and butter sauce for dipping. The homemade tortillas are found at all places here, though.

What we have come to think of as Mexican food is really Americanized or Tex Mex. The really authentic Mexican food is far different.

There's some decent little tamale joints to be found if you're willing to venture off the feeder roads. One general rule is if a place doesn't serve horchata to drink, it's probably Tex-Mex.

Very, very much so.

The real Mexican tamales are 180 degrees from what you regularly get. I always hated tamales but love the ones I get now. Nowhere near the same. Tamales are a staple at Christmas here and you have to be put on a waiting list to get the good ones from Delicious Tamales.

Is that the oatmeal and almonds etc. drink. I went to eat at a BBQ place in town and they had it. I wouldnt have known what it was, but I was with a coworker who is 3rd generation Mexican. She told me what it was, it looked pretty gross.

Heh, I'm not sure. It's one of those things where the ingredients change depending on where you are. Some places make it with oatmeal and almonds, but I'm used to it being rice based with plenty of vanilla and cinnamon. But it's milky looking and most likely is what you saw. Try it one time, you may or may not like it, but it's all about stepping a little outside what you know.

I was at a market in Guadalajara a couple summers ago when I had my first experience with mole. They had about 10 diffents batches, each with different flavors and colors (but all green or brown). It was fresh and undiluted and in massive, swirling piles which resembled 3ft tall dinosaur turds.

Then I ate it. It was great.

Yep, I had never tried mole or avocados until i went to Costa Rica on my honeymoon. I have been hooked ever since.

Don't get me started on avocados. I like them on virtually everything, but they might as well be made of gold they're so obscenely expensive here in the states. Top that off with the fact that half the time I shell out for them, I get home to find that only about half of it is even edible. Very few places I've found are aguacate-reliable.

Both are good, I go to Old Mexico because i'm friends with Victor and Rosie who own it. One of their sons plays soccer with my girlfriends son in the RPAR league.

El Polino had the best queso and salsa ... I'm just sayin'.
