Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
I think its about the same in basketball maybe an edge to wac because of Utah state, but they had a more recent sweet 16 run and dual bids. Belt better in baseball. and I have no clue about football might be slightly better..Think about it...Us and Hawaii..Best remaining teams. SJSU crap, UT StAte crap,NMSU horrible, Idaho crap, TX SA hasnt even started football program, TX STATE 1aa. So you tell me. If the WAC is better it aint by much..if at all.
Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
Maybe if we could compete against decent teams consistently and win some we would have already been asked to be in CUSA. Beat Fresno at home, USM at home, Navy at home, and win a road game vs a good team. The teams leaving the conference were just good programs and got out when they got a chance.
Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
AT A GLANCE: UTSA FOOTBALL FUNDING
"UTSA's football team is being funded mostly by student fees, which account for $9.3 million of the $13.3 million budget. Private donations make up $1.75 million. Other sources include university allocations from the bookstore, gate receipts, marketing, sponsorships and NCAA money.
Students approved a 2007 referendum to double athletic fees over five years, which were $10 per semester hour up to 12 hours and now are $15 per hour. The increase in fees will max out at $20 in 2013-14."
When you have a lot of students - 28,000 + - those fees add up.
Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
So basically our conference consists of Hawaii, Tech, former Sunbelt cellar dwellers, and now former Southland cellar dwellers? That's exciting. We're willing to be identified with all these commuter schools, but think we're too good for the Sunbelt? I don't get it.

For now, but I think they are gone sooner rather than later.

Good. That's just way too far to travel. Things will work out favorably by 2012; probably way before.

The USA Today article that mentions, briefly, our new members. You can tell the USA Today thinks it's big news!

Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
It costs more to travel in the WAC.
The WAC will have fewer dedicated football bowls and no "BCS busters" (as of right now)
With money coming into the conference from football being less and travel remaining the same, a conference with similar football income and less travel distance makes the most sense and has a greater likelihood of schools making money. The SunBelt and CUSA fit that description the best.

The Sunbelt doesn't fit that description at all because it causes automatic forfeiture of big donor support.

But winning ANY league for 5 years would put butts in seats, and at least this way we wouldn't have top boosters jumping ship.
I've said it elsewhere, but the bottom line is that as bad as the new WAC is, moving to the sunbelt explicitly sends the following message: Louisiana Tech does not care at all about its athletic program.
The lifeboat we are in from the shipwrecked WAC is not taking us in the direction we want to head; but it sure as hell beats jumping into the shark-infested waters of the belch and trying to find our own way to shore.
More practically, I'd rather hear the talking heads pity the plight of the WAC since the departure of the big boys than to hear them talk about how desperate our program was, such that CUSA passed us over and we had to come crawling back to a conference we left.
And then there is the fact that the mantra of our lsu-loyal Tech alumni and students is that Tech just needs to get back to the belch where "y'all" belong. If we jet the WAC for the belch before the WAC officially implodes, THE TERRORISTS WIN.

I really think most SBC fans have long since give-up on you guys ever being in the SBC. Do not get me wrong that SBC knows you would be a great addition but everyone accepts the fact that is not where you want your program to go. Really hope you get the CUSA invite you want and although there are some who feel you do not fit the profile they want, I hope that is not the case.
Until what you want comes along there is really no reason for you not to be a dominate team in this league and reap the rewards that come with it.

And with the San Antonio establishment's desire to see UTSA succeed (and with TSU just up the road), I like the WAC's chances of picking up a bowl bid in San Antonio.

Get off your knees
Re: WAC deal done to add UTSA, TSU and DU
Another thing about basketball is that the belch is dividing their MBB units between 33% more teams than the WAC is. Don't feel like doing the math on that, but it definitely factors into the "which conference is better" argument.

I really like what you guys have done over the last few years and hope you are rewarded for your efforts and hate that events out of your control have caused you some problems and concerns but hopefully it will work out to your advantage.
Best wishes for your program in the future.
