Berhalter should be fired tonight. There is no rescuing this with him around, he's clueless. This is the worst the USMNT has ever been. The cupboard is bare. No one on the team is worthy to wear the uniform. But, there's no one waiting in the wings either.
Told you this a month ago. Berhalter wants to play a club strategy at the national level. There is a reason that more national teams don’t play out of the back. It’s extremely hard to practice with a consistently changing roster. Club level your roster is set and you can develop the chemistry to do this. National level doesn’t have that same ability.
When you don’t have the players to match your strategy, you alter the strategy to match your players. The only national team coach who could do this consistently was Bob Bradley, and he had the benefit of having the best 10 we’ve ever had.
Berhalter’s biggest negative to me is he doesn’t know how to use his roster or even create a roster. We should be playing for the next two cycles and developing 18-22 year olds right now. He’s playing BRADLEY??? No one on the pitch should be over 22. Take your losses now, so you can be better later. He’s boneheaded and stubborn when it comes to his MLS first roster.
Strategy aside for a moment...
we can't even master basic skills! I have seen U12 sides look better than that crap last night. The simple passes. No movement without the ball. No marking on defense. No switching on defense. I could go on...
Well, even the usually apologetic British TV dude wasn't pulling punches last night. I expected Taylor to grill 'em, and he did. But the Brit is usually diplomatic...not last night. There is no "sugar-coating it" as Taylor said, this is a train wreck. Fire Berhalter now.
All of this article.
US Soccer is a joke right now. AND it starts at the TOP. We were given an amazing opportunity to reboot the entire system and instead we have Sulati 2.0 (now with even more nepotism).
nats has a good game last night. Still some weird player selection on behalf of Berhalter...Lovitz? Jordan Morris looked back in form. Brooks was back.
I still think we need to continue to focus on youth development for the next two cycles...that means Dest, Cannon, and others.
Canada sucks. We should NEVER lose to them.
With a 4-0 win over Cuba the US wins Group A of the Nation’s Cup. Canada also advances.
USWNT 4 Haiti 0
Opening match of CONCACAF's Olympic qualifying. Very lackluster performance. Press scored early and the US rode that 1-0 lead, although the game should have been tied, until the 70th minute when our new coach finally subbed... he put in the best player in the history of the game, Megan Rapinoe, who immediately had an impact. She threaded a perfect pass through traffic to Lyn Williams who scored on a header. Rapinoe followed moments later with a second assist and it was 3-0. Lloyd got the final goal in stoppage time.
Haiti was robbed in the 18th min when they scored off a corner kick. The ref denied the goal for "goalie interference." Nah! very bad call. Should have been 1-1.
Our new coach put us in a very conservative alignment, 4-3-3, and we were not running our normal offense. Marking backs were not making runs, etc... very mechanical, regimented, everyone stay in the alignment and hope to advance the ball with passes. US dominated TOP and Haiti was not really in a bunker defense, it was more our plodding, mechanical scheme that denied scoring opportunities. Haiti is not very good but at the international level, even a Haiti can play defense against such a boring attack. Rapinoe created scoring ops with her own super talent and creativity, and absolutely perfect passes.
Play Panama Friday night, next match in this opening round-robin format. Then we play Costa Rica, the best team in this pool, next to the US.
USWNT 8 Panama 0
Costa Rica will offer a stiffer challenge, but I still expect the US to dispatch them with relative ease.
US Men's Team on a roll! Beat Costa Rica 1-0 in a friendly. US played a very young squad against most of CR's regulars. BUT! it was a friendly . If the match would have meant something the intensity level would have been turned way up and the outcome different. Still...it is better to win than to lose.
USWNT 6 Costa Rica 0
CR kept most of its best players on the bench, resting them for Friday's semifinals. They figured they couldn't beat the US so why hinder their chances on Friday? Match would have been a bit more competitive had CR started all of their best players, but the result would have been the same, a "W" for the US.
Press had two beautiful goals, wouldn't have mattered who CR had out there, those two shots were hitting the back of net. Perfectly placed shots.
USWNT are on quite a roll...now a streak of 46 unbeaten games, which includes their perfect 7-0-0 record in the recent World Cup Finals.
Still unsure about "playing out of the back", but Berhalter is stubborn and I guess that is something.
Very young squad played, and for the most part did very well. They gave up a lot of turnovers, but the defensive formation and tracking were solid throughout the entire match.
Playing out of the back still requires a holding midfielder who can make runs, passes, and set up the field. I am not sure we have that one player yet.
I'm sure...we don't have such a player.
