My sons and I hiked down into Grand Canyon, back when I was in awesome shape (running marathons). It was summer, which I do NOT recommend as the time of year to attempt this, and very hot. It was 85F on the rim and reached temps of 105F down in the canyon. We went about 4 miles down, to a natural spring where you can refill canteens. Knowing we had to hike out, i.e. UP! I made the sensible decision to abort our planned hike. We turned around and hiked back up the very steep trail. It was tough and brutal. The heat was oppressive.

As I recall the path we were on was a total of 7 miles, rim to river, and then, of course, 7 miles back up. If Sleepy Joe hiked 7 miles up, good for him. I doubt it was in August though.
