Now we’ll see if Holtz goes with guy who earned the #1 on the field or goes with the guy that he hopes can do the job.
There wasn’t much reason to put Anthony in after Allen was successful at leading to a score the first two drives either.
If he really wanted Allen to win the game for us, he would have put him back out on the last drive. And he didn’t, he put Anthony in. There was a clear pattern of getting them 2 drives each before swapping, and that changed for the final drive. He placed Anthony out there instead of Allen getting his second attempt in a row.

Grubbs depth chart issues got elevated last night. No way this kid sits as the season progresses, he’s evidently a very smart football player to be around the ball as much as he was. He may not start but he’ll definitely play a lot. No need at all to redshirt this kid.
We got him for 4 years !!!

There are no redshirts this year. No one loses a year of eligibility. If they want to play for 5 years, they can.

So Anthony can play 2?

Tyler Grubbs reminds me of Sean Lee. Dude was ALL OVER the field. I'm a fan!

I noticed that too. Anthony throws very "pretty" passes. Very nice spirals.
Re: 9/19 Tech @ USM (6:30 PM) - Game
I bet Holtz will continue the game script of playing two QBs next game.
Re: 9/19 Tech @ USM (6:30 PM) - Game
After game 1 there are lots of reasons for optimism for this season.
- we are still in top tier of CUSA (okay, debatable that doesn’t say much)
-we survived game 1 replacing a lot of experience on defense (with numerous 1’s and 2’s out this game too)
-we got a good look at the QB’s. Neither were perfect, but game one with so many challenges with practices/game prep we knew some of it would be rough. Allen has improved. Led some scoring drives early. Anthony was better late. They both can improve on deep passes. Inconsistent with some under throws. I think Anthony is the better option. But also think they both need to play next week. Allen still need to be more decisive and lessen turnovers.
-we have talent. So many freshman involved. Their confidence and comfort will improve. I am hopeful this team can clean up some things and greatly improve fast.
Re: 9/19 Tech @ USM (6:30 PM) - Game
Allen looked MUCH better than Smith did at the same point
Allen looked better than Smith did last year.
It's obvious that when the QB coaching is going on, our HC butts in to say "Eat the ball before throwing an interception" and "Don't run the ball. You might get hurt." Neither one of those instructions to a QB give them confidence. They put fear in them.

I'm okay with that. Allen did not goof it up last night. He had a solid game too. In fact, I would say both QB's last night played better than Smith last year.
But, both QB's need to know that if we are facing a "3rd down and short" situation, IT'S OKAY to tuck the ball and get the first down. Just get the FIRST DOWN, Mr Allen!
Re: 9/19 Tech @ USM (6:30 PM) - Game
By the way, KUDO'S to our unsung hero's last night, the LA Tech OFFENSIVE LINE!!
The OL was fantastic in pass blocking. Luke Anthony had tons of time to find receivers late in the game.
Re: 9/19 Tech @ USM (6:30 PM) - Game
After rewatching some of the game, offense will be fine as long as Holtz doesn’t continue with a rotation at QB. Defense, I have no clue what to expect. Grubbs was fire at LB, but you could definitely tell that we lost 2 NFL caliber corners. I know that we’ve had limited practice time, but secondary play was dreadful. Half of the time Jones would be wide open. I’m hoping that once everyone recovers and gets in game shape, the defense will be better.
Another bright spot was the Oline and RB# 3. I thought they did a good job in pass pro, but you could tell they were gassed down the stretch. That will get better too with more reps and conditioning. I thought Garner was the key to that last drive. He really ground out some good hard yardage and sparked the offense. You could tell Henderson was gassed by the 3rd quarter.
