We should remember our place and be happy for mediocrity.
Just one stat to point out...
Offense:
2014 - 14th in scoring offense (Tony Peterson OC)
2015 - 19th in scoring offense (Tony Peterson OC)
2016 - 2nd! in scoring offense (Todd Fitch's 1st year OC, Ryan Higgins SR QB)
2017 - 49th in scoring offense (Todd Fitch/Skip Holtz/Rock Star QB)
2018 - 97th! in scoring offense (Todd Fitch/Skip Holtz/Rock Star QB Year 2!) (Fitch should have been fired this year, but is protected by his HC)
2019 - Currently sitting at 84th in scoring offense (Todd Fitch/Skip Holtz/Rock Star QB Year 3!)
Anyone paying attention to our program can see the product on the field is becoming stale. This board is a reflection of that.
I think we are average. Not good. Not the worst. Just average. Right now, that is what the people in charge want...average. I just would love to see some excitement on the field.
I don't know how many people my comment was directed at, but I do know that everyone on this thread seems to fall into the count. Yep, this board may be dead to what it was a few years ago, but very few positive people are willing to associate with those who only spout negatives constantly--even for a 4-1 team. If the fans come to this thread prior to deciding to go to a game, then how can they possibly be encouraged to want to go. So many of the games are available on tv now so I suspect that may have something to do with attendance. Season ticket holders can often fall into this category.
It's only a bad thing if you never acknowledge progress. If your demand for excellence means all you ever do is bitch about the 3rd winningest coach in school history, your demand removes you from reality to a point that you begin to be unpleasant to be around. The record shows that I was not in favor of hiring Skip. I still scratch my head weekly with his play-calling. I'm not a fan of TMac either. That said, I don't know that constantly complaining on my part gets us any closer to where I want us to be. Others may do what they like, but for a while it has seemed as though pointing out positives was anathema around here. That's no fun. I'm sure our boring offense has led to decreased traffic, but there could be other factors as well.
Most of us have acknowledged progress. Heck! I am the one who has touted our 5 straight bowl wins, tying us with Wisconsin as the ONLY programs who have gone 5-0 in bowls the past 5 seasons. That's great! And I am predicting we will make it 6 in a row this year. I have agreed with the master sunshine pumper, Dogfansince65, that we have had some very lean years and this beats that hands down! Most of us have acknowledged the reversal in our bowl woes...we were 2-3-1 (6 total bowls) dating back to 1977 prior to Holtz coming. Most of us, well, many of us, have attended the bowls and enjoyed the heck out of 'em! Holtz had a 4-8 season in 2013, his first, and I have pointed out he was two plays away from 6-6 and bowl eligible that year! And we had some bad luck too that year. FIVE STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS! Awesome.
But...
many of us are also asking "Is there nothing more?" If you're not moving forward you are actually falling behind. Is 8-5 what we can expect if Holtz stays here for another 15 years? Why can't we get that occasional 10-2...12-0 (yeah baby!) season and a bigger bowl, and a national ranking? I don't think it is unreasonable for we fans to want to experience an exceptional year now and again. And it's not like our schedule is too tough to expect that.
I like Skip Holtz (I am a HUGE fan of his Dad!) as a person and as a coach. He is "good." Well...????
I don't know much about that other board other than that I've never been impressed with their knowledge of the game. I'm not comparing with anything other than my experience here. I've not been here as long as a lot of others (only 16 years), but our record is as good as it's been over a sustained period of time and we seem to be more miserable than ever.
Many long time fans like myself consider growth of the overall program to be the the true sign of success. IMO, we've come close to achieving that very few times over the past 30 years...
- When we announced that we were going 1A
- 1997
- When we got in the WAC
- 2012
There are 4 1/2 low points among the four high points
- Losing to Tulane (the last two times)
- Losing to USC
- Losing to USU
- December of 2012
2014 to now has been filled with the things that should have grown our program. Booster's have more than done their part in helping us get more "stuff". We are not going up, we are going down. Leadership is everything. The last 7 years proves that.
Just a few years ago we were a Top 40 or 50 program and threatened the Top 25.
Which is why I said we are average.
We are not great. We are not UTEP.
Average.
We will win the games we are supposed to (against BAD teams) and lose the games we are supposed to (against decent to great teams). In the C-USA this means we will end up 7-5, 8-4, 2nd or 3rd in the West.
I think many on this board are asking is average okay. The other board says absolutely! It could be worse. We could be UTEP. Some on here are saying, yes but we could also be SMU right now. Both sides have a point. Some are saying we could be worse. Some are saying we could be better.
