There are eight state run hospitals that you would read about in the newspaper having closed before anyone even mentions the idea of shaving pennies at either hospital associated with the med schools.

I know some students who have been accepted for the 2012 first year med students and they received an email warning them that there is a strong possibility of the medical school closing the doors.

Just another threat to "things as they are". I agree with LFR, "Not a chance". BUT LSUS should pay attention!!!

LSUS doesn't have a med school...
And before somebody say's it's semantics, it was these semantics that the LSU-System used to muddled the LSUS-Tech merger. They played off of the fact that people don't understand the difference between LSUS, LSUBR, and LSUHSC...
They lsusystem is playing scare tactics that it might have to close LSUHSC-S due to budget, but I really feel the 3 "satellite" campuses would be shuttered before any med schools...

That is correct. There is certainly a chance that LSUHSC-Shreve could close down, but that would only be after LSUS, LSUA, and LSUE shut down. In other words, not much of a chance.

Very good post.
I think it's important for people to know that the med schools and law school are not part of LSU A&M. Even though their students get LSU football tickets and the law center is located in Baton Rouge, the LSU football team does not represent the med or law schools. The professional schools are each part of separate institutions.

That makes a lot of sense. I knew that politics were behind this somehow. The LSU-Xs are trying to fear monger into not getting as many cuts, but it's really sad they do it at the expense of students who actually believe their emails.

After passage in the House Education Committee by a 14-4 vote, the bill to authorize the merger of LaTech and LSUS was brought before the Louisiana House of Representatives for debate on Tuesday. This proposal followed months of study and debate in our community and by state higher education boards over the future of higher education in our region. The immediate gain for us is that policymakers across the state have taken a serious look at the higher education needs of the third largest metro area in our state.
While about sixty of the 105 House members favored the legislation to merge La Tech and LSUS, the threshold for passage of the bill is 70 votes or two-thirds of the legislature. A 2/3 vote has always been a high hurdle to overcome, but despite this obstacle, we pursued a debate on the issue because our business community believes a strong higher education enterprise is important to the future of the region and the status quo is not working.
Passing legislation requires education of the legislature. We had the chance to explore this complex change in the House Education Committee with nearly three hours of testimony, debate, and discussion. However, a legislative session packed with education reform, pension reform, and pending major budget cuts, provides little time to answer everyone’s questions in the House and Senate. But we will not give up on our pursuit for stronger and better educational opportunities in our region.
Most legislation that deals with bold change does not pass the first time around in the legislature and so we have no intention of giving up on the possibility of a better and stronger regional university. As a community, we must remain engaged in these discussions – especially as it relates to higher education and healthcare. We will continue to answer the questions of our legislators and continue to advocate for what will establish the most effective higher education enterprise in northwest Louisiana. It is too important to our community to ignore.

So.....we were gonna be 10 votes short of what we needed for passage.

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
Most legislators were unfamiliar with the issues so they looked to those from the area for guidance. As we know, some from this area were opposed to the loss of the 3 letters - l, s, and u - and this is why the merger would not have gathered 70 votes.
We need to continue e-mailing ALL Louisiana legislators with the good news about TECH. Perhaps the Elite Report information about academics should be sent to all.

What does the average Shreveport/Bossier person think of LSUS and Louisiana Tech?

Until this merger debate, I never realized how much disdain/hatred for Louisiana Tech existed in Shreveport/Bossier. I know it's not the majority, but most of the people that were so vocal opposing the merger considered Tech to be an inferior institution which it is clearly not. It's like nobody gives a rats ass that the LSU System has neglected LSUS for 40+ years but as soon as your start talking Tech merger these people become all loyal and patriotic towards LSUS. If the suggestion had been to merge LSU A&M and LSUS, lots of men would be walking around the SBC with chubbies bulging out of their pants. Reeves Marine would probably print up 15,000 merger t-shirts.
Narrow Peecock never responded to my email requesting him to explain his position on the merger. I agree this talk of LSUHSC-S closing down is nothing but scare tactics, but I though about emailing my future 1-term state senator to get his thoughts on it. But why waste my time since he doesn't have a clue. If he did respond it would be some dribble about Barksdale AFB and Moonbot studios that has absolutely no relevance.

The average "Shreveporter" grew up wearing LSU clothes. They grew up watching LSU play on Saturdays, whether in person or not, they are brought up to believe that LSU is the only university in the state. It's because of the window-dressing that having a successful major college athletic program provides. Most of their biggest fans have never stepped foot in a classroom at LSU and yet they give thousands of dollars every year. Just think about the number of Tech Alumni that give LSU money.
Most people in Shreveport grew up believing that LSUS was a part of LSU. That is why they are so territorial. How dare LA Tech challenge the almighty flagship? This is something that we must overcome with educating the masses. It won't be easy, but must be done for the benefit of Tech & North LA.

Apparently that sentiment also exists in Alexandria.
From a Town Talk article about LSUA's graduation:

"I wanted to get an LSU education, so I chose LSUA because it's affordable."

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II
This means that we need a MASSIVE education effort in the Shreveport area about Louisiana Tech and our standing. Yes, there will always be those that want those 3 letters and will play on that falacy, but we can stop the ignorance of those that follow them.

A massive effort? Yeah boy, DR will be all over that! First words out of his mouth - "we don't have any money for that." Translated, that means "I'm in my 70's and that's too much work. Heck, that's too much work if I was 50!),
