Unfortunately, our pass D tends to elevate even the crappiest QBs to Hypesman status.

I'm sure Tech's DC can rectify that. He's the best QB rehabilitater in the country.

I think I saw a stat that said UTSA passes for a little more than 200 yds per game, and rushes for 175 per game. Not big numbers offensively, but pretty balanced. Remember, former LA Tech OC Frank Scelfo is their OC, and he won't beat anyone deep. He will literally run the sheeet out of screen passes. Scelfo is the KING of SCREEN passes.

Weeellllll, since you know that and everyone else on God's green earth knows that, what will Tech DC's defensive game plan be?
I bet it will be very similar to the UNT first half game plan. Take away the deep and middle passes and just hope they flub up three times in a row somewhere in the drive.

If our offense plays up to potential, that's probably a pretty good game plan.

Why? Why should the defense play so passively? No team should ever predicate their defensive strategy assuming the offense will bail them out.
The defense should go in trying to beat the opponent's offense into submission. Kick their ass! Make them not want to get back up for another play! OWN THEM!
Force them to call the plays YOU want them to call and then CRUSH them!
When it comes to defense in football, I just don't understand the passive mentality. I would want to HUMILIATE the other team's offense.

That sounds great if you have a dominate defense. We don't. If you watch the North Texas game we kept everything in front of us. When they threw they mostly threw screens or slants and swing passes. We didn't let them have anything easy downfield. At halftime we were up 31-21 and they had to change their offensive game plan to keep up. That's when things fell apart for them. In that way we did force them to do what we wanted them to do which is throw the ball. We let our offense put pressure on their offense to keep up and they couldn't.
UTSA is all about the run. They have two backs that are equally good. Their QB can throw or run which is a bit scary to me. If you're going to bring pressure you run the risk of him breaking contain and scampering down field which I've seen humpteen million times watching Tech football. I'd say our best bet is to make him beat you with his arm which I don't think he can do. I can't say I have a real good feel for them because they score 50+ on Southern Miss one week and the very next week eek out a win against Rice 14-13. They are a bit of a bipolar team.

Thinking that's what's happened to the Tiggers Sat. night when Bama came to town!
GO BULLDOGS, got to beat the Runners this Sat. afternoon!

Hah! you sound like my high school DC! But, he would add comments like:
make them run to their mommas for a hug! (and other derogatory things, unfit to be posted here)
No one loves a dominating defense more than me. But, you have to have the athletes, the right pieces in the puzzle, to deploy an aggressive defensive strategy. Because, while you can surprise an offense and create a big play on defense, it's a long 60-min game. Opposing offenses can easily adjust and then use your aggressive against you. Such simple plays as traps, screen passes, etc...are designed to burn aggressive defenses.
Still, I agree with you in principle (principal?). A good DC, and his staff, will study game video of the opposition and pick out weaknesses to exploit. And! assume the opposing OC will make an adjustment, and are prepared with another tactic to attack that adjustment. There is an overall concept that is true in football, and indeed in all sports:
1. don't let their superstars beat you
2. STOP!! whatever it is that is working for them, and make them do something else!!
Those two concepts are the basis of a good defense.
Re: Will Louisiana Tech "blowout" SoMiss in MS for the second time in History?
Now that the Meep-Meeps and Mean Greene are out of the way, would our whole community be willing to discus the potential of a Blowout of SoMiss in two weeks?
Re: Will Louisiana Tech "blowout" SoMiss in MS for the second time in History?
USM is one of the worst team in the conference in term of protecting the ball. They turned the ball over 4 times against ODU. Qb Mullen is out of the line up and they are playing with a frosh Qb at the moment. USM is about the level of UtSA or less.
Re: Will Louisiana Tech "blowout" SoMiss in MS for the second time in History?
Okay, now we can start focusing on USM. I was pleased to hear Holtz's comments for his plans for the next two weeks. Clearly, he plans to focus on USM too.
Yeah, we came out flat last year, for whatever reason, but the biggest issue was SEVEN FRICKIN' TURNOVERS!! These TOs were not the result of some great defensive play by them, nope, we just dropped the ball on the ground. Remove the turnovers and we would've beaten USM last year. It was a very bad loss, and hopefully the Dawgs will remember it and use it as extra motivation this year. I say "extra" because we have enough motivation for what we are playing for: home field in the title game.
I don't care if it's a blowout, and I certainly see no reason to RUTS, if the opportunity presents itself, just win.
Re: Will Louisiana Tech "blowout" SoMiss in MS for the second time in History?
It was my impression the Mullens was held out for a concussion (could be completely wrong). If so, I'm assuming he'd be back for our game.
