I’m actually surprised that Fitch did. Knowing how little he actually uses an OC. I guess Vandy needed some eyes in the sky.

Most power programs conduct coaching searches using consultants. Some make that public, while others keep that fact private.
All of those consultants pay former coaches or other analysts to pour over tape and/or attend games to strictly watch a head coach and his staff. Texas and LSU both used consultants who obtained sideline passes to watch Tom Herman during games in 2016.
Unfortunately for Skip his win ugly approach the past couple of seasons has certainly hurt him if he's seriously looking for a P5 job. The "play-not-to-lose" problems we had late in games from 2014 to 2017 can't help either. Could a program like Baylor overlook that approach? Perhaps.
Just to give a few examples. This past season in the Bowling Green game 15 or our first 17 run plays were the zone read give. The numbers were similar in the win at FAU in 2018. We tried that approach against Southern Miss in 2018. We didn't turn the football over but still lost the game. Skip calls his own plays and at times he looks like he's calling plays in a game coached by Bo or Woody during the 10-year war.
Couple that with the late game problems we had against P5 opponents like Kansas State, Arkansas, and South Carolina (we had 4th quarter leads in all three).
Can a consultant sell that to an athletic director? Could an AD sell that to his biggest boosters? Maybe someday but it hasn't happened yet.
Yeah, I think anyone that digs any deeper than the record will pass on Skip.

I wonder if any assistants from North Dakota State would like a nice bump in pay? They won their EIGHTH FCS National Championship in nine years yesterday. The average assistant's salary is $47,478 per year.
How much does an Assistant Football Coach make at University of North Dakota in North Dakota?

More than most coaches, Skip Holtz could really benefit from a good OC. It's the missing link in Skip's program, and it's the primary reason Tech fans are bored with Skip. P5 school's won't hire Skip because he hasn't shown that he can hire, manage and get along well with a strong minded, successful, OC. And to win consistently at the P5 level, a head coach has to be able to do that.
With very few exceptions (Mike Leach perhaps, being one), a head coach at the P5 level can't wing it by himself as "co-OC" the way Skip does. It's bush league, and it's very limiting, creatively.

You're on a roll HD! You nailed it again. Just look at Coach O. He went from being barely a mediocre coach to being a "genius" thanks to Joe Brady, and!!! leaving his OC(s) alone to do their jobs.

I think the fascinating thing for me about LSU is that no one has hired Joe Brady away yet. The dude can flat out coach, but is 2nd fiddle to Steve Ensminger at LSU?
He’s easily an OC or better at P5 school.

Ensminger will retire in the next year or 2. Brady will likely get a nice bump even if he has still sharing the role. He will probably be the OC and name his salary at LSU soon.
Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Brady just agreed to a contract extension at LSU that'll prevent him from leaving for a job at another college for the next three years, but it won't prevent him from leaving for a job with an NFL team. Rumor in Baton Rouge is that he's probably going to get offered the OC job with the Carolina Panthers after tonight's NC game.

Brady is the real deal. They are running an NFL offense at LSU. (And apologies to Ensminger who has coached forever and his offenses were never this good, I believe most of it is Brady)

So if he leaves LSU for a head college football coach job do they kill his wife or what?

Correctomundo! It's all Brady. Ensminger had his chance to strut his stuff and LSU's offenses always sucked.

Aside from the "t" word... good post.
We need to add to the rushing attack. There is no creativity with the boring read option. Pat White or Lamar Jackson aren't walking through our doors anytime soon. We can run that well against the slower weaker teams in the conference, but against the big boys and upper tier CUSA teams, that doesn't work.
Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Saw an article that stated that Holtz hit some bench mark this year that automatically triggered a 1 year extension on his contract? Is this true? If he posts a .750 win % he just tacks on another year? His only bonus opportunities should be P5 wins and conference championships.

Yep. That's pretty old news. For a 12-game season, if he wins 9 games, he gets a 1-yr extension of his contract.
