Now it's a weird hybrid where you still aren't supposed to be paying for play, but the thing everyone always knew would happen has happened - come to my school and Joe Bob's Motors will give you a no-show job for a million bucks. The schools aren't loving it either (even the rich ones) because oddly enough when it had to be under the table the school itself still had a little more control in the matter. Now the schools have less control, and the people in charge don't love that.
But I don't think it will go on forever. It'll have to seek it's own level, and that may be what all of us G5 have-nots fear (what is outlined above) but we were always going to get screwed in these matters no matter what. We were before, we will be in whatever becomes the new status quo as well. The rich always get richer. But the hope for NIL to fall back into some manner of control is probably just facing reality and acknowledging that football players are every bit as much employees of the school as GRAs or GTAs or the guy working in the food court or writing tickets. And then - if they get some anti-trust help or (from the other side) some ability to collectively bargain - they may be able to put some parameters around the NIL inducements and/or the transfer process.
