Schools need rivalries. Especially at our level.
We ain’t competing for FBS Championships. We ain’t even competing for C-USA Championships.
And whether some on this board or other fan boards want to admit it…we are their biggest rivalry. By MILES.
Like it or not, our future is in local football rivalries. USM, Ark State, ULL, ULM, USA

@PeteThamel: Sources: The Mountain West is in deep discussions with UTEP, and there’s mutual interest between both sides. A deal has yet to be finalized, but an answer on UTEP joining the league is expected soon

Update: UTEP is in the final stages of joining the Mountain West, per ESPN sources. UTEP has alerted Conference USA officials of the school's intention to leave the league. This is expected to be formalized soon.

Per multiple sources, UTEP is expected to join the Mountain West. The MW is also reportedly in serious discussions with FCS Tarleton State.

The Pac-12 has also had preliminary discussions with Grand Canyon and Saint Mary's -- who played each other in the NCAA men's basketball tournament last year -- but now that Gonzaga is on board, the focus will go back to football.

Be a lot better for us if they'd take NMSU.
For a couple of reasons, actually. Be good for the travel budget plus any CUSA teams that leave will pay/forfeit conference payouts - more money for us.
UTEP will move into a tie for our 5th most played FBS opponent before they leave (tying UNT, who will then take back sole possession the next season). They're way out in front of any other CUSA teams with NMSU our next most-played.
But it's still fine if they leave (so long as both do).

Re: Sources: Pac-12 rebuilding conference, targeting Boise St, SDSU, Fresno St, Colorado
Agreed, UTEP and NMSU have to be considered as a package deal. For any conference's sake and for the sake of both of those schools. They each benefit from the other as a travel partner. The MWC is also courting Texas State, so who knows how this will play out? Might be that UTEP would jump to another conference if paired with Texas State, leaving NMSU stranded on an island.
As for CUSA, our hope should be to any conference, take both (UTEP and NMSU) or take neither.

Nobody wants NMSU. Nobody. Except Judy.

Re: Sources: Pac-12 rebuilding conference, targeting Boise St, SDSU, Fresno St, Colorado
It is not going to be good if UTEP leaves NMSU. Having to travel to El Paso has always been a complaint from CUSA members and fans but having NMSU as the travel partner really helped alleviate that travel problem. Now with just NMSU, it is worse than before.
I like to imagine that Judy could have gotten all members apart from UTEP to quickly add some by-law about exit fees to push both UTEP and NMSU out together or keep them together in the conference.

When CUSA invited them, they were a no-brainer. They were already FBS, had good basketball, were right next to UTEP, and really wanted a conference. Of course there was a reason NMSU and Liberty were available (not the same reason) but with just 5 members and two of those holding another offer - you had to start with NMSU and LU.
But I think this is a cautionary tale for being careful about adding one school just based on proximity to another one. For example, it's never realistic (because there are no real options) but you used to see nonsense on the realignment board about trying to find a travel partner for FIU. You can't do that unless the new school would also be worth having for their own sake. Otherwise you risk losing the original school and being stuck with an outlier for no reason.
Both PAC and MWC still need a school or so each. I don't think we're quite done yet.

This is the 2004-05 WAC! Here's what their home conferences currently look like in 2026-27 (at least today).

@PeteThamel: Sources: Texas State’s talks with the Mountain West have stalled. The school has informed the Sun Belt that it won’t be going to the Mountain West. Texas State received a verbal offer over the weekend.

Re: Sources: Pac-12 rebuilding conference, targeting Boise St, SDSU, Fresno St, Colorado
UTEP is officially gone to the MWC. Leaves NMSU stranded on an island. What will Judy do now? Guess she can drive her toy Jeep around and proclaim "all is well." Then invite Western Valley Texas State A&M Community College to replace UTEP. Or, and I love this one, Texas Woman's University is on the list of candidates. A return to Denton for Tech teams, baby! BTW, no knock on Texas Woman's University, I hold a certificate in Family Law and Mediation from there. Me and one other fellow were the only men in a class of 30 women. Had a good time!

Re: Sources: Pac-12 rebuilding conference, targeting Boise St, SDSU, Fresno St, Colorado
Well North Texas got in by promising a baseball team that never materialized, so I guess TWU could promise to get over the 15% threshold for male students to add male sports and then just never do. Judy won't do a damn thing about it.
