Re: If you want a thread to die
17 more days until kickoff:). It's AWESOME, BABY!! YA GOTTA LOVE IT!! WHOA NELLIE!! GO BULLDOGS!!
- #17 DIZZY DEAN, major league pitcher (30 game winner), tv announcer, and general character!!
- As Dizzy said, "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up."
- "I ain't what I used to be, but who the hell is
- "Son, what kind of pitch would you like to miss."
And his stats and acheivements indeed back up his nomination as the best athlete to wear number 17. Dizzy pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs between 1930 and 1941. He also made a comeback with the St. Louis Browns in 1947. Part of the 1934 "Gashouse Gang," Dizzy was the last player to win 30 games until 1974 (he went 30-7 in 1934.) Dizzy was the NL MVP in 1934, and led the NL for four consecutive years in both complete games and strikeouts. Dizzy was certainly quotable. Ol’ Diz did not speak the King’s English. Willie Mays didn’t slide into third base; no, he slud. When somebody accused Diz of not knowing the King’s English, he shook his head and said, “I know the king is English. The queen is English, too.”
When teachers criticized his syntax, Diz remarked, “Sin Tax? What will those folks in Washington think of next?” He loved his home state of Mississippi. And lest we think being "politically correct" is new, in 1964 Con*gress of Racial Equality wrote a letter de*manding that Dizzy Dean, base*ball announcer, stope praising Mississippi, "good 'ol Mississippi" as he used to say.
Did you know.....Dizzy pitched alongside his brother Paul "Daffy" Dean, with the Cardinals? What once major beer did Dizzy promote as it sponsored nationally televised baseball? He'd say. have a good 'ol .......?"- #17 Bulldog senior tight end Andy McAlindon from San Bruno, California
- #18 Bulldog senior wide receiver Sanford Seay from Leesburg, Georgia
ps: Good to back on this thread after three WONDERFUL days paddling bayous near Mandeville (Bayou Cane, Castine, Lacombe) and metro New Orleans (Bayou St. John, Bayou Bienvenue, Blind River). Working on a personal "bucket list" to paddle on 100 streams, now up to 85. Thanks for keeping it going, guys.

Re: If you want a thread to die
The year was not 1974 but 1968 when Denny McClain won 31 games for the Detroit Tigers.
And for a bonus questions the St. Louis Browns moved to what city to become what team? It was the same year that the Braves moved from Boston to Milwaukee and the Athletics moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City.

Thanks, I wondered about that date when I saw it: cutting and pasting from Internet sites always seems to be iffy.
Of course, I have learned that John F. Kennedy, Elvis, and Michael Jackson are all still alive!!:D
I did not know your question. The St Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Orioles beginning with the 1954 season according to Wikipedia.

I remember watching on tv. Dizzy would get into the Falstaff and Pee Wee would have to call the rest of the game. He's a VERY distant cousin. Related to the Deans in Sarepta/Cotton Valley area I believe.

I remember that, too. I remember another partner before Pee Wee. Had to look that up. It was Buddy Blattner. Thanks Wikipedia.

16 days now til our first football game of the 2015 season in Ruston. Less than five weeks til kickoff. TOUCHDOWN BULLDOGS!!!
- #16 Joe Montana, NFL quarterback nicknamed "Joe Cool." How did Joe get that nickname? Here's an example of his demeanor that shows why: It's the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXIII, with 3:10 left on the clock, the 49ers at their own eight yard line and down 16-13 to the Bengals. Harris Barton, a lineman for the 49ers at the time, explains, "Right before that series, we're standing on the sidelines, and he says, `Look up there.' He's pointing up in the stands. He says, `That's John Candy.' '' They went on to score and win the Super Bowl. Here are some of Joe's credentials:
- Four-time Super Bowl winner (starting QB)
- Three-time Super Bowl MVP
- Eight-time Pro Bowl selection
- NFL Hall of Fame class of 2000
- Second all-time in passing efficiency (92.3)
- # 16 Whitey Ford, major league pitcher for the New York Yankees.
- He became known as the "Chairman of the Board" for his ability to remain calm and in command during high-pressure situations.
10× All-Star (1954–1956, 1958, 1959, 1960–1961², 1964)
6× World Series champion (1950, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962)
Cy Young Award (1961)
World Series MVP (1961)
3× AL wins champion (1955, 1961, 1963)
2× MLB ERA champion (1956, 1958)
#16 Bulldog sophomore receiver Marcus Gaines new number in 2015
#16 Whose hit song "Sixteen Tons" spent 10 weeks atop the country charts and 7 weeks atop the pop charts, making him an early crossover star from the 1950s?
