Tomorrow is National Dogs in Politics Day!
Today--Sept 23-- is the anniversary of John Paul Jones' great naval victory over the British in a 1779 Revolutionary War battle and the date of his famous quote:
"I have not yet begun to fight."
On September 23, Jones ship the Bonhomme Richard engaged the British vessels Serapis and the smaller Countess of Scarborough, which were escorting the Baltic merchant fleet. After inflicting considerable damage to the Bonhomme Richard, Richard Pearson, the British captain of the Serapis, asked Jones if he had struck his colors, the naval sign indicating surrender. From his disabled ship, Jones replied, “I have not yet begun to fight,” and after three more hours of furious fighting the Serapis and Countess of Scarborough surrendered to Jones.

You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.
I tell the kids, somebody’s gotta win, somebody’s gotta lose. Just don’t fight about it. Just try to get better.
If the people don’t want to come out to the ballpark, nobody’s going to stop them.
I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.
So I’m ugly. I never saw anyone hit with his face.
I’m lucky. Usually you’re dead to get your own museum, but I’m still alive to see mine.
If I didn’t make it in baseball, I won’t have made it workin’. I didn’t like to work.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it.
