Well guys, I have some disheartening news. As some of you know, I am an architecture student at Tech, and today we went to Monroe to tour some firms, one of which was Tim Brandon Architects. While touring the office I noticed a project that was obviously a version of a new field house in the south end zone of the Joe. I asked Mr. Brandon, assuming it was their failed attempt to receive the contract to the design bid, but he responded, "no, that's the new design." So I pressed for more information and he informed me that his office had been partnered with Populous design, the original design firm of the design that is currently visible on the Quest for Excellence web page, that was until recently. Populous's design is for a budget of roughly 30 million, which we did not meet, our current budget is roughly 14 million, so the design was scrapped. Mr. Brandon's office now holds the design contract to design, from scratch, the new south end zone facilities at the Joe. He informed me that they are basically starting over, back to the interviewing various coaches and managers to inform a building layout. His best guess is that it will be another 8 months or so before a design is sent out to bid. So construction may not start until December of 2013 or later... I was taken back to say the least, how have we been kept so in the dark? The administration has obviously known this was taking place, but chose not to inform the Tech community. I hate to be the one to bring this news to BBB, but I knew I had to share the information I had received.
On another hand though, Mr. Brandon told me that if Tech partnered with a construction company early on, it would make the design process easier, quicker, and easier to stay on budget, and he figures they can produce a design much quicker than the 8 month period he gave me in the other scenario. But take heart, the design he showed me, in my humble opinion, is better than that of the Populous design and looks nothing like Populous's original design, and it is being designed by a Tech Alum! But, in accordance with Mr. Brandon's request, I did not take a photo of the proposed design, so I apologize in advance for not having a photo to share.
Let's hope Tech does this right this time...
They have been saying basically the same thing to alums everywhere when asked other than the money issue. Everyone knew that without it being stated. They have said ceremonial groundbreaking during the season, probably homecoming, then moving dirt after the season was over.
Doesn't surprise me that there are half truths as to why from them if what you say is true, but the timelines match either way.
What a revolting development this is!!! :shocked2:
A new design doesn't bother me as much as the lack of money and scaling back. I hope they decide to use the money to close up the underbelly of the stadium and scale back on the endzone (still connecting it with luxury suites and a cross over.
This has been one of the most poorly executed projects in Tech history. The campus is looking great and the new Intramural facilty is fantastic. This seems small compared to what they have done on renovations around campus and new buildings.
Que Tylertechsas. :icon_wink:
Yes, Mr. Brandon did say that the project will be considerably scaled down, but I don't know if that means including renovations to other sections of the stadium Champ.
